Differentially Private Hierarchical Spectral Clustering.

We study hierarchical spectral graph clustering under edge differential privacy (DP) through the lens of iterative eigenvector estimation on adjacency matrices. We propose a differentially private recursive spectral framework, where each binary partition is obtained via a rank-one noisy power method applied to induced adjacency sub-matrices. At each iteration, carefully calibrated Gaussian noise is injected into the matrix-vector multiplication, ensuring (ε,δ)-edge DP under cumulative privacy accounting across both power iterations and recursive hierarchy levels while preserving the essential

Large-mode area erbium-doped tantalum pentoxide waveguide amplifier with high on-chip net gain.

We report a high-performance erbium-doped tantalum pentoxide (Er3+: Ta2O5) large-mode-area (LMA) waveguide amplifier fabricated by direct etching of the gain medium. The device achieves strong optical confinement and high pump-signal overlap (>98.6%) while maintaining propagation loss of 0.7 dB/cm after annealing. Under 140 mW total pump power at 980 nm, the 2.75-cm-long amplifier delivers a maximum on-chip signal enhancement of 38.1 dB at 1530 nm and 24.1 dB at 1550 nm, corresponding to net gains of 8.6 and 9.6 dB, respectively, with gain exceeding 3 dB/cm across the C-band. Large-signal meas

Ligand-Field Engineered White Copper-Based Nanozyme: Low-Background Detection for Sensitive Discrimination of Wine Origin.

Copper-based nanozymes are effective mimics of polyphenol oxidase. However, the d9 electron configuration of Cu(II) with facile d-d transitions causes most copper-based nanozymes to appear black, blue, or brown, thereby introducing background interference, whereas white copper-based nanozymes remain unexplored. Herein, a white copper-based nanozyme with low background interference and multienzyme-like activity was constructed through the synergy of strong and weak field ligands. Compared with other colored copper-based nanozymes, the white nanozyme can increase the signal-to-noise ratio more t

Enhanced LGMD Model with Adaptive Probabilistic Regulation for Compound Interference.

When subjected to compound interference, such as spatial noise and high-frequency jitter, current LGMD-inspired collision detection models for micro-robots are prone to false alarms and perceptual degradation. To address this challenge, this paper proposes an enhanced visual perception model that incorporates adaptive Gaussian random variables and spatial residual feedback (SRF). These random variables filter out discrete spatial noise, while the SRF suppresses global image shifts induced by jitter. Evaluations on synthetic and real-world video sequences validate the proposed mechanisms. Compa

SFFO-RL-intelligent environmental monitoring: smart sensing networks with artificial intelligence.

Rapid urbanization has led to increasingly severe environmental degradation, necessitating the development of intelligent, adaptable, and explainable monitoring systems for sustainable urban management. Existing modeling frameworks are limited by problems related to sensor noise, data inconsistencies, poor adaptability, and a lack of explanation of how models arrive at their predictions. This study proposes a Satin Firefighter Optimization-Reinforcement Learning (SFFO-RL) model within an Intelligent Environmental Monitoring Framework (IEMF) to enable accurate, interpretable environmental asses

Investigation of the Medical Image Modalities to Detect the Abnormalities in the Spinal Cord Using Thresholding Techniques.

Accurately segmenting spinal structures from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for diagnosing degenerative disc diseases. However, 1.5 T low-field MRI often suffers from high noise and low contrast, complicating the segmentation process. This study provides a systematic comparative evaluation of four thresholding-based techniques: binary/global, Otsu, adaptive, and standard deviation-based methods. Using a dataset of spinal DICOM images, we analyzed the effectiveness of these algorithms in delineating bone and soft tissue boundaries. The performance was quantitatively validated usi

A vision-based sign language recognition & voice conversion system for inclusive communication.

Major communication barriers are often encountered among deaf and/or speech-impaired people, which is particularly serious during emergencies. This study proposes a novel vision-based sign-to-voice conversion that recognizes hand gestures through a convolutional neural network incorporated with advanced preprocessing and transformer-based classification. A custom gesture dataset was created by capturing labeled images and video frames under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, and hand orientations for proper training. DiffUS: Differentiable Ultrasound Rendering from Volumetric Imaging.

Intraoperative ultrasound imaging provides real-time guidance during numerous surgical procedures, but its interpretation is complicated by noise, artifacts, and poor alignment with high-resolution preoperative MRI/CT scans. To bridge the gap between preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance, we present DiffUS, a physics-based, differentiable ultrasound renderer that synthesizes realistic B-mode images from volumetric imaging. DiffUS first converts MRI 3D scans into acoustic impedance volumes using a machine learning approach. Next, we simulate ultrasound beam propagation using ray tra

Orbit Determination for Continuously Maneuvering Starlink Satellites Based on an Unscented Batch Filtering Method.

Orbit determination for non-cooperative low Earth orbit (LEO) objects undergoing continuous low-thrust maneuvers remains a significant challenge, particularly for large satellite constellations like Starlink. This paper presents a method that integrates the unscented transformation into a batch filtering framework with an optimized rho-minimum sigma points sampling strategy. The proposed approach uses a reduced dynamics model that considers Earth's non-spherical gravity and models the combined effects of low-thrust and atmospheric drag as an equivalent along-track acceleration. Binaural Localization Development and the Effect of SmartSound iQ with SCAN in Children with Cochlear Implants.

BACKGROUND: Binaural hearing is crucial for spatial auditory perception, including sound localization. Cochlear implants (CIs) are commonly used in children with congenital deafness to support binaural auditory development, but the extent to which they facilitate effective localization remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact of CIs on binaural functional auditory development and sound localization in children with congenital deafness, considering factors such as age at implantation, hearing experience, and CI laterality. METHODS: Thirty-eight CI-assisted children (aged 4-

Reliable AI Platform for Monitoring BCI Caused Brain Injury and Providing Real-Time Protection.

Invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) holds great promise for restoring motor, sensory, and cognitive functions in patients with disabilities, yet chronic implantation induces neuroinflammation and degeneration at the electrode-tissue interface, impairing neural connectivity and device long-term stability. Current brain injury assessment approaches cannot simultaneously meet the requirements of efficiency and interpretability in healthcare with high-risk diagnoses and treatment. Meanwhile, limited and expensive biomechanics data pose significant challenges in AI training. Herein, feature-bas

A blended CFD/multi-body analysis method for elastohydrodynamics of plastic oil pan.

The noise, vibration and harshness(NVH) feature is attracting more and more attentions due to its effects on durability, comfort and compliance with noise regulations. The thin-walled components play an important role in NVH of an engine. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element multi-body analysis blending method is proposed to analyze the dynamic characteristics of oil pan and the hydrodynamic/structural factors affecting camshaft speed fluctuations. With CFD approach, the oil-air two-phase flows in plastic oil pan on different time scales are simulated, and the

Online real-time learning of dynamical systems from noisy streaming data.

Recent advancements in sensing and communication facilitate obtaining high-frequency real-time data from various physical systems like power networks, climate systems, biological networks, etc. However, since the data are recorded by physical sensors, it is natural that the obtained data is corrupted by measurement noise. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for online real-time learning of dynamical systems from noisy time-series data, which employs the Robust Koopman operator framework to mitigate the effect of measurement noise. The proposed algorithm has three main advantages: (a) i

Invited Commentary: There's No Place Like Home-Integrating a Place-Based Approach to Understanding Sleep.

Light exposure at night impedes sleep and shifts the circadian clock. An extensive body of literature has linked sleep deprivation and circadian misalignment with cardiac disease, cancer, mental health disorders, and other chronic illnesses, as well as more immediate risks, such as motor vehicle crashes and occupational injuries. In this issue of the Journal, Zhong et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2022;191(9):1532-1539) build on this literature, finding that in a cohort of 50,000 California teachers, artificial light at night, noise, green space, and air pollution were all associated with sleep disturb

An intelligent learning approach for improving ECG signal classification and arrhythmia analysis.

The recognition of cardiac arrhythmia in minimal time is important to prevent sudden and untimely deaths. The proposed work includes a complete framework for analyzing the Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. The three phases of analysis include 1) the ECG signal quality enhancement through noise suppression by a dedicated filter combination; 2) the feature extraction by a devoted wavelet design and 3) a proposed hidden Markov model (HMM) for cardiac arrhythmia classification into Normal (N), Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB), Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB), Premature Ventricular Contraction (PVC)

Evaluation of brain SERT with 4-[18F]-ADAM/micro-PET and hearing protective effects of dextromethorphan in hearing loss rat model.

This study investigated the protective effects of dextromethorphan (DXM) on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in rats. This study aimed to improve the auditory threshold and to understand the protective effects of DXM against N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)-induced neurite degeneration of serotonergic neurons. The animals were exposed to 8-kHz narrowband noise at a 118-dB sound pressure level for 3.5 h. The hearing thresholds were determined by measuring the auditory brainstem response to click stimuli. Serotonin transporter (SERT) expression was determined through micro-positron emission tomograp

Adverse Health Outcomes Among US Testicular Cancer Survivors After Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy vs Surgical Management.

We evaluated for the first time, to our knowledge, adverse health outcomes (AHOs) among US testicular cancer survivors (TCS) given chemotherapy (n = 381) vs surgery-only patients (n = 98) managed at a single institution, accounting for non-treatment-related risk factors to delineate chemotherapy's impact. Chemotherapy consisted largely of bleomycin-etoposide-cisplatin (BEP) administered in three or four cycles (BEPx3, n = 235; BEPx4, n = 82). Incidence of at least 3 AHOs was lowest in surgery-only TCS and increased with BEPx3, BEPx4, and other cisplatin-based regimens (12.2%, 40.8%, 52.5%, 54.

BDNF, NT-3 and Trk receptor agonist monoclonal antibodies promote neuron survival, neurite extension, and synapse restoration in rat cochlea ex vivo models relevant for hidden hearing loss.

Neurotrophins and their mimetics are potential treatments for hearing disorders because of their trophic effects on spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) whose connections to hair cells may be compromised in many forms of hearing loss. Studies in noise or ototoxin-exposed animals have shown that local delivery of NT-3 or BDNF has beneficial effects on SGNs and hearing. We evaluated several TrkB or TrkC monoclonal antibody agonists and small molecules, along with BDNF and NT-3, in rat cochlea ex vivo models. The TrkB agonists BDNF and a monoclonal antibody, M3, had the greatest effects on SGN survival

Advances in the Field of Bone Conduction Hearing Implants.

The number of marketed bone-conduction hearing implants (BCHIs) has been steadily growing, with multiple percutaneous devices and transcutaneous devices now available. However, studies assessing efficacy often have small sample sizes and employ different assessment methodologies. Thus, there is a paucity of evidence to guide clinicians to the most appropriate device for each patient. This paper outlines audiological guidelines for the latest devices, as well as research from the most up-to-date clinical trials. We also outline the evidence base for some potentially contentious issues in the fi

Dose and Image Quality in Low-dose CT for Urinary Stone Disease: Added Value of Automatic Tube Current Modulation and Iterative Reconstruction Techniques.

The aim of this study was to compare dose and image quality (IQ) of a baseline low-dose computed tomography (CT) (fix mAs) vs. an ultra-low-dose CT (automatic tube current modulation, ATCM) in patients with suspected urinary stone disease and to assess the added value of iterative reconstruction. CT examination was performed on 193 patients (103 baseline low-dose, 90 ultra-low-dose). Filtered back projection (FBP) was used for both protocols, and Sinogram Affirmed Iterative Reconstruction (SAFIRE) was used for the ultra-low-dose protocol only. Dose and ureter stones information were collected
