BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies may be structural or functional and manifest at birth or be detected later in life. One such condition, hydrocephalus, is commonly managed with a Ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt. As children grow with a shunt in situ, parents play a vital role in recognizing the symptoms of shunt malfunction and reporting for medical care. The possible complications are unpredictable and require a keen awareness of the associated symptoms and signs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive phenomenological design explored experiences of parents caring for children wit

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the interactive effects of parents' ages, as well as the overall effects of paternal age, on adverse birth outcomes using nationwide data from Japan.
METHODS: Live birth data from the Vital Statistics Surveys in Japan from 2010 to 2023 were analyzed. Preterm birth, low birth weight, macrosomia, small-for-gestational-age (SGA) status, and large-for-gestational-age status were defined as adverse birth outcomes. Log-binomial regression models were used to examine associations between maternal and paternal ages and adverse birth outcomes. In addition to regression anal

BACKGROUND: B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer, and while most children in high-resource settings are cured, therapy carries risks for long-term toxicities. Understanding parents' concerns about these late effects is essential to guide anticipatory support and inform evolving therapeutic approaches.
PROCEDURE: In partnership with the national patient advocacy organization, Momcology, parents of children diagnosed with ALL between the ages 1 and 19 years completed an online survey. Parents selected up to five concerning potential late effects, rated the

Unintentional pediatric firearm-related injuries constitute a public health challenge. This cross-sectional research study examines how children's experience with firearms, parent-level supervision and training, and youth exposure to firearms is associated with youths' knowledge about and behavior with firearms. One hundred sixty-three children aged 10-12, all with firearm exposure, and their parents participated. Self-report data from youth and parents on youth firearm experience and knowledge; family firearm use and storage; and how children were supervised and trained to use firearms served

PURPOSE: Traumatic dental injuries are common in children and adolescents, and timely emergency management of avulsed permanent teeth is critical for prognosis. Parents are often first responders, yet evidence regarding parental knowledge in Sweden is limited. This study assessed knowledge of the emergency management of avulsed permanent teeth in a Swedish cohort of parents and explored factors associated with knowledge level.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted amongst parents attending a tertiary paediatric dental clinic in Stockholm, Sweden. The questionnaire asse

Adolescent healthy behaviours may improve cardiometabolic health in adulthood differently across socioeconomic groups. We aimed to quantify the effects of adolescent healthy behaviours on multiple biomarkers of adult cardiometabolic health by socioeconomic backgrounds. We used a population-based cohort of Finnish adolescents from the Young Finns Study (1980-89, n = 2984) followed into adulthood (2001-11). Healthy behaviours (no smoking, no alcohol consumption, sufficient physical activity, daily fruit and vegetable consumption) and socioeconomic backgrounds (parental- and neighbourhood-related

Endothermy is one of the most distinctive physiological traits of mammals, especially during lactation. In this phase, heightened metabolic heat production strengthens endothermy and improves parental care effectiveness, thereby increasing reproductive output. However, it also raises the risk of life-threatening hyperthermia. The precise trade-off governing this balance remains poorly understood. We measured parental care behavior, endothermy, and small intestine digestive enzyme activity and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and liver, in striped hamsters with

BACKGROUND: Early-life epigenetic mechanisms may contribute to the developmental programming of childhood obesity. We aimed to examine whether placental asparaginase (ASPG) DNA methylation (DNAm) is associated with adiposity at 6 years of age and to explore its cross-tissue patterns and parent-child concordance.
METHODS: In a prospective birth cohort, placental ASPG DNAm was quantified by pyrosequencing and related to anthropometric and cardiometabolic outcomes in children at 6 years (n = 180). DNAm was also measured in child peripheral blood (n = 127) and in maternal and paternal blood sampl

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to obtain health information, including guidance on child and adolescent mental health. In anorexia nervosa (AN), where early recognition and timely intervention are critical, the accuracy of AI-generated information available to parents may have important clinical implications. This study evaluated the performance of LLMs in responding to parent-oriented questions about AN.
METHODS: A comparative model evaluation was conducted using three conversational AI systems: ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Google Gemini, and DeepSeek. Twenty questions r

Introduction Early detection through universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) and timely intervention can improve speech, language, and cognitive outcomes. However, limited awareness among caregivers remains a major barrier to early identification and management. This study performed a situation analysis of parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) to identify strategic barriers and inform a targeted health communication strategy. Methods A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in North India from November 2023 to October 2024. A total

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heritable neurodevelopmental condition whose genetic underpinnings may manifest as subclinical cognitive and behavioral traits in first-degree relatives, including parents of diagnosed individuals. Assessing parental cognitive profiles is valuable for identifying Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP) endophenotypes. Accordingly, this study examined possible cognitive endophenotypes by comparing neurocognitive profiles of parents (mothers and fathers) of children with ASD versus parents of neurotypical children. This cross-sectional study included 124 parents o

OBJECTIVES: There are a range of clinical uncertainties for managing mild and unilateral deafness in infants, such as whether hearing interventions are effective or even required. This study aimed to explore parental experiences of decision making for their pre-school aged children with mild or unilateral deafness identified through newborn hearing screening.
METHODS: Grounded theory methodology was used to develop a theory of parental decision making. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with seventeen parents of children with mild and unilateral deafness age 5 months to 4 years old.
