Cardiovascular and cancer-specific mortality in older patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer following the introduction of immuno-oncology therapies.

INTRODUCTION: Immuno-oncology (I-O) therapies have significantly improved survival outcomes in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, older patients, who account for a substantial proportion of NSCLC cases, are frequently underrepresented in clinical trials. The complexities of aging and associated comorbidities highlight the need for tailored treatment strategies in this population. This study aimed to evaluate mortality patterns and causes of death among older patients with advanced NSCLC before and after the introduction of I-O therapies in the United States, while also

A Social Media Campaign and Web-Based Survey About Prostate Cancer Genetics: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Germline genetic variants are important for prostate cancer (PCa) management and hereditary cancer risk assessment, but testing is underused. Furthermore, patients are often unaware of the genetic connections to PCa. Social media is increasingly serving as a source of awareness for health information and a method to gather data from a large population. OBJECTIVE: There were three objectives: to (1) create and test social media messages related to PCa genetics and genetic testing, (2) determine which social media message was most engaging, and (3) assess knowledge of and attitudes

Clonal Hematopoiesis and Risk of New-Onset Myocarditis and Pericarditis.

IMPORTANCE: Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is the age-related clonal expansion of hematopoietic stem cells with leukemia-associated mutations. Certain CHIP mutations promote atherosclerosis and heart failure through immune-related pathways. OBJECTIVE: To test whether CHIP is associated with the development of myocarditis and pericarditis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This observational population-based cohort study used data from the UK Biobank. Enrollment occurred between 2006 and 2010. Participants with whole-exome sequencing, no prevalent cardiovascular disea

Association of magnesium depletion score with serum anti-aging protein Klotho in the middle-aged and older populations.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency and low levels of the anti-aging protein Klotho have been independently associated with various age-related diseases. The Magnesium Depletion Score (MDS) is recognized as a more valuable and reliable predictor of body magnesium status than traditional clinical markers such as serum and urine magnesium. However, the relationship between magnesium status and serum Klotho levels remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between magnesium depletion, as quantified by MDS, and serum Klotho levels in US adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from

Historical Redlining, Contemporary Gentrification, and Severe Maternal Morbidity in California, 2005-2018.

IMPORTANCE: Historically redlined neighborhoods may experience disinvestment, influencing their likelihood of gentrification, a process of neighborhood (re-)development that unequally distributes harms and benefits by race and class. Understanding the combined outcomes of redlining and gentrification informs how the mutually constitutive systems of structural racism and racial capitalism affect pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine if historical redlining and contemporary gentrification is associated with increased severe maternal morbidity (SMM) odds. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:

Development of a brief stigma and perceptions questionnaire for pharmacists: An exploratory factor analysis approach in New York state counties enrolled in the healing communities study.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how pharmacists' attitudes and stigma toward naloxone and Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) influence effective linkage to treatment. We examine the psychometrics of a new Pharmacist Opioid Use Disorder Perceptions Questionnaire (P-OUDP-Q), a multidimensional measure to examine pharmacists' stigma and perceptions related to MOUD in the New York State (NYS) site of the HEALing Communities Study. METHODS: The study recruited a sample of 324 pharmacists from 16 counties in NYS between January and June 2022. A 74-item questionnaire assessed pharmacists'

Propensity-Matched Analysis of the Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration with Systemic Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Disease.

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) involves aberrant complement activation and is a leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Complement aberrations are also implicated in many systemic immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), but the relationship between AMD and these conditions remains undescribed. The aim of this study is to first assess the association between AMD and IMIDs, and then assess the risk of AMD in patients with specific IMIDs associated with AMD. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study and cohort study. SUBJECTS AND CONTROLS: Patients with AMD were

Medical Conditions in Former Professional American-Style Football Players Are Associated With Self-Reported Clinical Features of Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome.

Consensus criteria for traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES) specify that at least one core clinical feature of cognitive impairment (CI; e.g., difficulties with memory, executive function) or neurobehavioral dysregulation (ND; e.g., explosiveness, rage, and mood lability) be present and not fully accounted for by other health disorders. Associations between self-reported symptoms that mirror the core clinical features of TES-and how they may be related to concomitant medical conditions-remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of medical conditions and footba

Examining promotive and protective effects of ethnic identity on alcohol and cannabis use among Black young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Experiences of racial discrimination among Black Americans are associated with numerous adverse behavioral health outcomes, including risk for substance use. Research has shown ethnic identity to be directly related to reduced substance use risk among Black Americans, as well as mitigate substance use risk as a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination. However, whether the specific facet of ethnic identity (affirmation and exploration), is related to the relationship between racial discrimination and problem substance use based on substance type is unclear. Thus, the curr

The effects of social determinants of health on acquired immune deficiency syndrome in a low-income population of Brazil: a retrospective cohort study of 28.3 million individuals.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDH) include factors such as income, education, and race, that could significantly affect the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Studies on the effects of SDH on HIV/AIDS are limited, and do not yet provide a systematic understanding of how the various SDH act on important indicators of HIV/AIDS progression. We aimed to evaluate the effects of SDH on AIDS morbidity and mortality. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 28.3 million individuals was evaluated over a 9-year period (from 2007 to 2015). Multivariabl

Socioeconomic differences between medically and surgically treated prolactinomas: a retrospective review of 598 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic status (SES) is known to affect presentations and outcomes in pituitary neuroendocrine tumor resections, but there is a paucity of literature examining its impact specifically on patients with prolactinomas, who may be treated medically or surgically. The authors sought to determine whether SES was associated with differences in treatment choice or outcomes for prolactinoma patients. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed patient records at a high-volume academic pituitary center for prolactinoma diagnoses. Patients were split into medically and surgically trea

Skin pigmentation is negatively associated with circulating vitamin D concentration and cutaneous microvascular endothelial function.

Darkly pigmented individuals are at the greatest risk of hypovitaminosis D, which may result in microvascular endothelial dysfunction via reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and/or increased oxidative stress and inflammation. We investigated the associations among skin pigmentation (M-index; skin reflectance spectrophotometry), serum vitamin D concentration [25(OH)D], circulating inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10) concentrations, and the NO contribution to local heating-induced cutaneous vasodilation (%NO-mediated vasodilation) in a diversely pigmented cohort of young adults.

Digital dementia in the internet generation: excessive screen time during brain development will increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in adulthood.

Converging evidence from biopsychosocial research in humans and animals demonstrates that chronic sensory stimulation (via excessive screen exposure) affects brain development increasing the risk of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural disorders in adolescents and young adults. Emerging evidence suggests that some of these effects are similar to those seen in adults with symptoms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the early stages of dementia, including impaired concentration, orientation, acquisition of recent memories (anterograde amnesia), recall of past memories (retrograde amnesia), s
