Wearable Multi-Sensor Fusion for Field Assessment of Dynamic Postural Stability During the Curling Delivery in Young Adult Curlers: Integrating Trunk Kinematics, Plantar Pressure and Core-Muscle Activation.

Postural control in curling is expressed during a dynamic, sport-specific delivery on a single sliding leg, yet it is still assessed almost exclusively with static single-leg force-plate protocols that poorly reflect on-ice demands. This study developed and validated a wearable multi-sensor system that fuses trunk and pelvis inertial measurement units (IMUs), instrumented plantar-pressure insoles and core-muscle surface electromyography (sEMG) to quantify dynamic postural stability during the simulated curling delivery in 110 young adult curlers (age range 18-24 years). A four-phase segmentati

A Whole-Community Approach to Training Public Health and Medical Students in Public Health Emergencies.

In 2024, a community-higher education partnership in the Midwest prepared public health and medical students for public health emergencies using an innovative whole-community approach of private-public collaboration. The partnership program consisted of evidence-based, workshop-style training with community resident participation. Researchers posed 2 questions before program initiation: (1) How willing were students to respond to emergencies (on a Likert-type scale of 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree) before and after the program? and (2) What was the main challenge to mass-casualty

Mental health and economic impact of a police coresponder program for individuals in crisis in Miami-Dade County.

The clinical and economic impact of a coresponder program was evaluated in a sample of 35 "high-utilizers" (defined as 3+ calls for service in a 6-month period for a behavioral health crisis requiring commitment per Florida's Baker Act statute) completing the program in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The final sample was predominately male (74%), White (83%), and Hispanic (83%), with an average age of 40 years. The program was associated with statistically significant improvements in all mental health functioning domains at the 6-month postenrollment follow-up, including reductions in violence ri

Moderating Effects of Social Determinants of Health on Quality of Life in Expressive Writing Interventions Among Chinese American Breast Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Chinese American breast cancer survivors (CABCS) often face cultural challenges regarding emotional expression. Expressive writing (EW) interventions can improve emotional expression and, thus, quality of life (QOL), but individual responses to EW may vary. We examined whether specific social determinants of health (SDOH)-personal income, education, employment status, and marital status-moderated the effect of EW on QOL among CABCS. METHODS: A three-arm randomized controlled trial of EW was conducted among CABCS (N = 136). Conditions were self-regulation (SR; emotions, coping, posi

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists in substance use disorders: A systematic review of ClinicalTrials.Gov.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are widely prevalent and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Current treatments have limited efficacy and there are no United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatments for several SUDs (such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and cannabis use disorders). Emerging evidence suggests glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) may improve outcomes related to SUD. Therefore, a systematic survey of ongoing clinical trials that are evaluating the effects of GLP-1RAs for SUDs is warranted. METHODS: We searched ClinicalTrials

Predictors of detectable viral load among adolescents with HIV in low resource settings who are receiving care in youth-friendly clinics.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with HIV (AWH) have higher rates of detectable viral loads (DVL) than adults. We sought to identify clinical and psychosocial predictors of DVL among AWH in optimized care environments. METHODS: We prospectively recruited 1250 AWH (aged 10-19) from four youth-friendly HIV clinics in Eswatini and Lesotho (May 2023-October 2024). Participant clinical data was abstracted from an electronic medical record, and participants completed validated surveys assessing depression, anxiety, stigma, self-efficacy, adverse childhood experiences, and substance use. We developed predicti

Efficacy of acupuncture on upper limb dysfunction after stroke: a randomized controlled trial protocol with surface electromyography evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Upper extremity functional reconstruction remains a major clinical challenge in post-stroke neurorehabilitation. Acupuncture has unique advantages as a complementary alternative therapy. Thus, in this study, we aim to compare sham acupuncture to reveal the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of upper limb dysfunction post-stroke with surface electromyography (sEMG), a validated objective assessment tool, and a subjective index. METHODS: In this prospective, principal-investigator-blinded randomized controlled trial, 74 patients who meet the inclusion criteria are r

Navigating Social Influences: The Impact of Anticipated HPV Vaccination Stigma from Friends and Family on College Students' HPV Vaccination Intent.

BACKGROUND: Family and friends play a dual role in supporting and hindering young adults' decisions about the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. However, the mechanisms by which anticipated HPV vaccination stigma from these social circles affects vaccination intent remain largely understudied. This study applied the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model to examine how anticipated HPV vaccination stigma from family and friends influences vaccination intent and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Unvaccinated young adults (N = 728) ages 18 to 26 years in Texas completed a survey to as

AEGIDA: Results of a Pilot Randomized Trial of an HIV Self-Testing Intervention for Women Who Exchange Sex and Use Substances in Kazakhstan.

HIV self-testing (HST) is a user-controlled approach to increasing HIV testing and status knowledge, the gateway to biomedical prevention and treatment. HST is a promising option for key populations facing stigma-related barriers to testing in primary and specialty (e.g., HIV, substance use) healthcare clinics. We conducted a pilot efficacy trial of AEGIDA, a 4-session intervention designed for women who exchange sex and use substances, in Kazakhstan, where there is a growing HIV epidemic. Between November 2022 and August 2023, we used community-engaged approaches to recruit and screen 305 HIV

A Nanocomposite Dynamic Covalent Cross-Linked Hydrogel Loaded with Fusidic Acid for Treating Antibiotic-Resistant Infected Wounds.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with high levels of morbidity and is considered a difficult-to-treat infection, often requiring nonstandard treatment regimens and antibiotics. Since over 40% of the emerging antibiotic compounds have insufficient solubility that limits their bioavailability and thus efficacy through oral or intravenous administration, it is crucial that alternative drug delivery products be developed for wound care applications. Existing effective treatments for soft tissue MRSA infections, such as fusidic acid (FA), which is typically administe

Developing the Opioid Rapid Response System™ for Lay Citizen Response to the Opioid Overdose Crisis: a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Emergency responders face challenges in arriving timely to administer naloxone in opioid overdoses. Therefore, interest in having lay citizens administer naloxone nasal spray has emerged. These citizens, however, must be recruited and trained, and be in proximity to the overdose. This study aimed to develop the Opioid Rapid Response System (ORRS)tm to meet this need by developing a system to recruit and train citizen responders and evaluate outcomes in a randomized clinical trial. ORRS recruitment messages and training platform were developed iteratively and then outcomes for each were evaluat

Greater dietary variety is associated with lower food anxiety at discharge from intensive eating disorder treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Food anxiety and limited dietary variety often persist after intensive treatment for eating disorders (EDs) and may contribute to relapse. Prior studies demonstrate decreased meal-related anxiety with residential or inpatient treatment, but less is known about changes in dietary variety and anxiety associated with specific foods. The current study assessed change in food anxiety and dietary variety in inpatients with EDs (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) in relation to discharge outcomes from meal-based behavioral treatment. METHOD: Patients (N = 128) admitted to a specialized
