Molecular investigation of tick-borne and zoonotic pathogen dissemination and host-pathogen interactions in canines.

Dogs are among the most widespread and beloved domestic animals worldwide. As close companions of humans, they are commonly exposed to the environment and to various vectors, making them potential reservoirs for a wide range of vector-borne pathogens. This study was aimed to determine the molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of Anaplasma (A.) ovis, Toxoplasma (T.) gondii and Theileria (T.) ovis among domestic dogs in Pakistan. A total of 275 canine blood samples were collected from five districts in Punjab, Dera Ghazi Khan (n = 57), Vehari (n = 7), Layyah (n = 34), Bahawalpur (n = 38) an

Unique Genetic Clades and Frequent Zoonotic Transmission of Sporothrix brasiliensis with Reduced Itraconazole Susceptibility.

Sporothrix brasiliensis is driving a major zoonotic epidemic in Brazil, predominantly via cat-to-human transmission. In the late 1990s major outbreaks were reported in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the southernmost state. We characterized the antifungal susceptibility and genetic diversity of 450 S. brasiliensis isolates collected between 2009 and 2024 in RS to better understand treatment response, emergence and transmission.A bimodal distribution of the itraconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was observed with 24% non-wild-type (NWT) isolates. Short tandem repeat

Awareness and practices survey of two ancient zoonotic diseases in Dhading District of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis and rabies are two ancient zoonotic diseases that were discovered millennia ago, yet still claim thousands of lives worldwide in the twenty-first century. In Nepal, these diseases are endemic and pose a significant public health challenge in rural areas, such as the Dhading District, which has a low literacy rate and limited data availability. This study aims to address the gaps by evaluating knowledge of zoonotic diseases and identifying associated practices that can prevent their transmission. METHODS: An in-person randomized cross-sectional survey was conducted in f

Central nervous system tuberculosis in Tunisia: clinical phenotypes from a 14-year cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis is associated with high mortality, neurological sequelae, diagnostic delay, and heterogeneous clinical spectrum. Beyond HIV infection, the role of broader immunosuppression and host inflammatory responses remains insufficiently characterized. In Tunisia, exposure to unpasteurized dairy and cattle raises concerns about possible zoonotic transmission. METHODS: All patients treated for CNS tuberculosis at La Rabta University Hospital (Tunis, Tunisia) from 2010 to 2023 were included. Patients were classified into mutually exclusive phenotype

Local and introduced lineages drive MERS-CoV recombination in Egyptian camels.

UNLABELLED: Dromedary camels are the primary reservoir for Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), a zoonotic coronavirus responsible for sporadic human infections. While clade B predominates in the Arabian Peninsula and is frequently linked to zoonotic outbreaks and household secondary transmission, clade C circulates primarily in African camels, with limited evidence of human infections. The extent of MERS-CoV transmission, genetic diversity, and cross-species potential in North Africa remains poorly characterized. Here, we investigate MERS-CoV incidence, seroprevalence, and

Are intestinal parasites in dogs an infection risk to children in the same household? An investigation in Cuba.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic transmission of intestinal parasites from dogs has been documented, but the extent of such transmission is unclear. This is particularly relevant in low- and middle-income countries, where people share living space with their domestic animals. We investigated whether dog ownership was associated with intestinal parasitoses in children in Cuba. METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from children from 108 households in a rural village in Cuba, of which 66 owned a dog and 42 did not. Samples were also collected from the dogs. Samples were examined for intestinal parasites b

Amplified fragment length polymorphism genotyping of Trichophyton indotineae indicates possible zoonotic transmission.

The anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton interdigitale and its counterpart T. mentagrophytes are phylogenetically closely related species. In India, the most common endemic dermatophyte species belongs to the T. indotineae. The internal transcribed spacer genotype VIII within this species complex was recently renamed as T. indotineae based on its rapid emergence in India and its elevated virulence and terbinafine resistance. While humans are considered a source of T. interdigitale infection, animals are considered a source of T. mentagrophytes. For T. indotineae it is not known whether inf

Pilot study to assess the impact of feed-through insecticide on the sand fly density in an endemic area of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) remains a significant public health concern in Morocco. Leishmania major, the principal cause of zoonotic CL (ZCL) in Morocco, is transmitted by the female sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi, with the great gerbil (Meriones shawi) serving as the primary reservoir host. Current control strategies predominantly rely on strychnine-treated bait targeting gerbils. Recently, insecticide-treated rodent bait has emerged as a promising alternative for ZCL control. This study evaluated the village-level impact of feed-through insecticide, involving two intervention vi

Spatiotemporal Distribution and Clinical Characteristics of Zoonotic Tuberculosis, Spain, 2018-2022.

Zoonotic tuberculosis (zTB) is a communicable disease that has major effects on both human and animal health. Spain reports the highest number of zTB cases in humans annually in the European Union. We describe the epidemiology of human cases of zTB caused by Mycobacterium bovis and M. caprae in Spain during 2018-2022. The incidence of M. bovis infection compared with M. tuberculosis infection was higher in patients who were native-born (adjusted odds ratio [aOR) 2.32, 95% CI 1.44-3.82), HIV-negative (aOR 3.39, 95% CI 1.24-14.0), or had extrapulmonary forms of TB (aOR 2.20, 95% CI 1.46-3.28). Clinical and Epidemiologic Review of Capnocytophaga Spp. Infections Identified at a Public Health Reference Laboratory-California, 2005-2021.

INTRODUCTION: Capnocytophaga is a genus of bacteria that are commensal to the oral microbiome of humans and some animals. Some Capnocytophaga species are found in the human oral cavity and rarely cause disease in people; the species found in animals are zoönotic and can be transmitted to people via saliva. This study describes the clinical and epidemiologic features of patients from whom Capnocytophaga spp. were isolated from blood and other clinical specimens at the California state Microbial Diseases Laboratory. METHODS: Clinical information was obtained from laboratory submission forms and

Genetic analysis reveals the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of Streptococcus dysgalactiae isolates from sheep.

Streptococcus dysgalactiae (S. dysgalactiae ) is a common pathogen of humans and various animals. However, the phylogenetic position of animal S. dysgalactiae isolates and their zoonotic potential remain unclear. Most molecular epidemiological studies explicate beta-hemolytic streptococci according to their MLST and M protein gene (emm) types. Although human S. dysgalactiae isolates are relatively well characterized, the data concerning animal isolates are scarce. Here, we report the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of S. dysgalactiae strains recovered from sheep and thei

Metagenomic insights into host-specific gastroenteritis bacteria in forest rodents of Sarawak, Borneo: implications for one health surveillance of rodent-borne pathogens.

Rodents are known to act as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases due to their widespread distribution and synanthropic nature. Among these, foodborne pathogens capable of causing gastroenteritis in humans are of particular concern, as rodents can facilitate their transmission through contamination of food sources. Forest-dwelling rodents may harbour bacterial taxa native to their habitat, posing a risk of zoonotic spillover to nearby human settlements. This risk is further heightened by the growing prevalence of ecotourism activities, particularly in tropical countries like Malaysia. In this study

One Health Investigation into Mpox and Pets, United States.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is zoonotic and capable of infecting many mammal species. However, whether common companion animals are susceptible to MPXV infection is unclear. During July 2022-March 2023, we collected animal and environmental swab samples within homes of confirmed human mpox case-patients and tested for MPXV and human DNA by PCR. We also used ELISA for orthopoxvirus antibody detection. Overall, 12% (22/191) of animal and 25% (14/56) of environmental swab samples from 4 households, including samples from 4 dogs and 1 cat, were positive for MPXV DNA, but we did not detect viable MPXV o
