[Somatic development of asthmatic children and youth].

UNLABELLED: Systemic diseases especially the chronic ones, causing substance and oxygen insufficiency may lead to disturbances in growth, in the nutritional status and slowing of the maturation processes. Bronchial asthma is the most frequent inflammatory chronic disease of the respiratory system and it is estimated, that 5-10% of the population in the development period suffers from it. Somatic development retardation, disturbances in the nutritional status and maturation may be caused by respiratory insufficiency leading to anoxia, improper nutritional habits, recurrent or chronic infections

Practical aspects of volume control in chronic kidney disease using whole body bioimpedance.

BACKGROUND: Fluid status is an independent predictor of mortality in dialysis patients. Current methods of fluid assessment have several limitations. SUMMARY: An ideal method should be cheap, portable, easy to perform without extensive training, reproducible and determines patients' excess or deficit of total body water. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) fulfils many of these criteria and can give additional information on fat and lean tissue composition. The accuracy and precision of BIA has been shown to be equivalent to the 'gold standard' direct estimation techniques. KEY MESSAGES: Although th

Body composition among Sri Lankan infants by ¹⁸O dilution method and the validity of anthropometric equations to predict body fat against ¹⁸O dilution.

BACKGROUND: Body composition indicators provide a better guidance for growth and nutritional status of the infants. This study was designed to (1) measure the body composition of the Sri Lankan infants using a reference method, the (18)O dilution method; (2) calculate the body fat content of the infants using published skinfold prediction equations; and (3) evaluate the applicability of the skinfold equations to predict body fat among Sri Lankan infants against the (18)O dilution method. METHODS: Twenty five healthy, exclusively breast-fed infants were randomly recruited at well-baby clinics,

Anthropometrics, body shape over 12 years and risk of cancer events in pre- and post-menopausal women.

Studies of anthropometry and cancer have focused on body mass index (BMI). Relations between weight, waist (WC) and hip circumferences (HC), birth length and adult height with cancer are less well studied. Women from the French E3N study, born between 1925 and 1950, were followed biennially from 1995 until 2008. Body shape was classed into four groups based on median WC and HC at baseline. Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated by Cox proportional hazards regression models. Over the 12 years of follow-up, 7,247 of 63,798 women developed cancer. As WC increased, we found a trend for decreasing canc

Body size and risk of renal cell carcinoma in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

Previous studies suggest that obesity is related to increased risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC); however, only a few studies report on measures of central vs. peripheral adiposity. We examined the association between anthropometric measures, including waist and hip circumference and RCC risk among 348,550 men and women free of cancer at baseline from 8 countries of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). During 6.0 years of follow-up we identified 287 incident cases of RCC. Relative risks were calculated using Cox regression, stratified by age and study center

Clinical Outcomes of Contemporary Bariatric Surgical Procedures: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Most bariatric surgery studies have been conducted at single centers, with limited research focusing on Asian populations. In Korea, bariatric surgery has been covered by the National Health Insurance System since 2019. Using this nationally representative data, we assessed the clinical outcomes of bariatric surgery in Korea. METHODS: We included 856 individuals who underwent bariatric surgery between 2019 and 2020 with repeated health checkups before (2 years) and after (2±0.5 years) surgery. Anthropometric indicators and the prevalence of metabolic diseases were compared pre- an

Automated scout-image-based estimation of contrast agent dosing: a deep learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Optimal contrast agent dosing in computed tomography (CT) depends on accurate patient weight, yet manual measurements increase workload and self-reporting can introduce bias. We developed and tested a deep-learning-based algorithm to automate the approximation of contrast agent dosage directly from CT scout images. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 817 patients undergoing thorax/abdomen CT. Prior to examination, patient weight was collected via manual scale measurements and self-reporting. We developed an EfficientNet convolutional neural network pipeline to estimate weight fro

Development of a Weight-Band Dosing Approach for Vosoritide in Children with Achondroplasia Using a Population Pharmacokinetic Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vosoritide is a recently approved therapy for achondroplasia, the most common form of disproportionate short stature, that has been shown to be well tolerated and effective in increasing linear growth. This study aimed to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model to characterize pharmacokinetics (PK) of vosoritide and establish a weight-band dosing regimen. METHODS: A PPK model was developed using data from five clinical trials in children with achondroplasia (aged 0.95-15 years) who received daily per-kg doses of vosoritide. The model was used to simulate exp

Influence of Identity Development on Weight Gain in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) typically begins during early adolescence, an important phase of personality development. A substantial proportion of adolescent AN patients shows impaired personality functioning, which might be a relevant but understudied aspect of illness severity. The developmental status of identity as key element of personality is suggested to influence inpatient treatment outcome in adolescents with AN. METHODS: This study analyzed existing data of N = 60 adolescents with AN. Multilevel models assessed the influence of identity functioning, measured by the Assessment o

Predicting the Risk of Weight Loss After Esophageal Cancer Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition after esophageal cancer surgery is associated with reduced health-related qualify of life. Therefore, a prediction model identifying patients at risk for severe weight loss after surgery was developed. METHODS: Data from a Swedish population-based cohort study, including 616 patients undergoing esophageal cancer surgery in 2001-2005, was used. Candidate predictors included risk factors available before and immediately after surgery. Severe weight loss was defined as ≥ 15% loss of body weight between the time of surgery and 6 months postoperatively. The prediction mode

Total and Trimester-Specific Gestational Weight Gain and Offspring Birth and Early Childhood Weight: A Prospective Cohort Study on Monozygotic Twin Mothers and Their Offspring.

Gestational weight gain (GWG) has in numerous studies been associated with offspring birth weight (BW) and childhood weight. However, these associations might be explained by genetic confounding as offspring inherit their mother's genetic potential to gain weight. Furthermore, little is known about whether particular periods of pregnancy could influence offspring body weight differently. We therefore aimed to explore total and trimester-specific effects of GWG in monozygotic (MZ) twin mother-pairs on their offspring's BW, weight at 1 year and body mass index (BMI) at 5 and 10 years. MZ twin mo

Enhanced weight loss with pramlintide/metreleptin: an integrated neurohormonal approach to obesity pharmacotherapy.

The neurohormonal control of body weight involves a complex interplay between long-term adiposity signals (e.g., leptin), and short-term satiation signals (e.g., amylin). In diet-induced obese (DIO) rodents, amylin/leptin combination treatment led to marked, synergistic, fat-specific weight loss. To evaluate the weight-lowering effect of combined amylin/leptin agonism (with pramlintide/metreleptin) in human obesity, a 24-week, randomized, double-blind, active-drug-controlled, proof-of-concept study was conducted in obese or overweight subjects (N = 177; 63% female; 39 +/- 8 years; BMI 32.0 +/-

Rapid weight gain during infancy and obesity in young adulthood in a cohort of African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasing in the United States. Evidence-based prevention is a public health priority and should target well-defined risk factors and critical periods. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that rapid weight gain during early infancy is associated with obesity in African American young adults, a group at increased risk of obesity. DESIGN: A cohort of 300 African Americans born at full term was followed from birth to 20 y of age. A pattern of rapid weight gain was defined as an increase in weight-for-age > or = 1 SD between birth and 4 mo. RESULTS: About 29% of subjects

Evaluation of 2'-Fucosyllactose and Bifidobacterium longum Subspecies infantis on Growth, Organ Weights, and Intestinal Development of Piglets.

Human milk is rich in oligosaccharides that influence intestinal development and serve as prebiotics for the infant gut microbiota. Probiotics and 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) added individually to infant formula have been shown to influence infant development, but less is known about the effects of their synbiotic administration. Herein, the impact of formula supplementation with 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis Bi-26 (Bi-26), or 2'-FL + Bi-26 on weight gain, organ weights, and intestinal development in piglets was investigated. Delayed spinal cord injury following microchip placement in a dog.

A three-year-old female, entire Yorkshire Terrier dog was examined because it had progressive non-weight-bearing left forelimb lameness and tetraparesis of two weeks duration. Clinical signs were first observed following mating. Examination confirmed non-weight-bearing left forelimb lameness and tetraparesis. Left forelimb muscle atrophy was also noticed. Survey radiography revealed a metallic foreign body consistent with a microchip in close proximity to the left articular facets between the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae. Computed tomography identified the exact location of the foreign b
