A Single-Armed Pilot Study to Evaluate a Psychosocial Intervention for Young People Who Have Experienced a Burn Injury: The Wellbeing Study.

Children with serious burns often suffer psychosocial consequences. This study evaluated the pilot of a 6-session psychoeducational intervention newly designed to support the wellbeing of children who experienced burns. Each 1-h session was delivered online to individuals at times deemed convenient to participants, by trained facilitators (mental health researchers and other allied health professionals). The pilot was single-arm, with psychosocial screening administered at baseline, immediately postintervention, and at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Eligible participants were 6-17 years, 6-week t

[Dynamics of recalcitrant substances in mixed decomposition of indigenous tree species litter in alpine forest burned areas of Northwest Sichuan, China].

Litter decomposition is crucial for restoration of burned areas in the alpine forests of northwestern Sichuan. With the indigenous tree species in the alpine region of Ganzi, Quercus semicarpifolia and Abies fabri, as the research objects, we set up five treatments, including single Q. semicarpifolia litter (Q), single A. fabri litter (A), and 3 mixed treatments (the two were mixed at a ratio of 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3, namely QA3:1, QA1:1, and QA1:3). All the litters were incubated in a 600-day field decomposition experiment in forest burned areas. We explored the decomposition characteristics of r

Airborne 1O2 Delivery via a Superhydrophobic Dressing as a Pathway to Next-Generation Wound Therapies, an In Vivo Murine Burn Model Study.

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been investigated as a promising therapy for treating wound infections. However, its clinical application is limited by tissue hypoxia, poor photosensitizer (PS) penetration, and off-target toxicity. In this work, we use a light-activated, contactless aPDT system that delivers airborne singlet oxygen (1O2) via a compliant, transparent superhydrophobic (SH) bandage. The verteporfin-coated SH membrane generates 1O2 while minimizing direct contact between PS and wound tissue. In a murine third-degree burn model infected with methicillin-resistant Stap

Effects of a Nurse-Led Telehealth Aftercare Program on Pain and Physical Role Functioning of Adult Burn Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Burn-related pain remains a significant global health issue that is often challenging to manage. It becomes more complex once a patient with burns is discharged but is unable to return to use available medical review services because of long travel distances and/or financial constraints. Poorly managed pain can adversely impact on the burn survivor's physical performance capacity, leading to poor recovery outcomes. In response to these critical gaps, this study examined the effects of a nurse-led telehealth aftercare program on pain and physical role functioning outcomes of adult b

In situ photocrosslinking ROS-adaptive caffeoyl chitosan/boronic acid-grafted gelatin hydrogels for treatment of combined radiation-burn injury.

Combined radiation-burn injury (CRBI) is a serious wound that is difficult to treat and typically results from radiation therapy, nuclear explosions, or nuclear accidents, where ionizing radiation and thermal burns usually occur simultaneously or sequentially. Excessive expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) contributes to CRBI. Caffeic acid (CA) is a common natural antioxidant polyphenol whose clinical application is limited by its poor solubility and low stability. Here, we develop an in situ photocrosslinking caffeoyl chitosan/boronic acid-grafted gelatin hydrogel to treat CRBI. Caffeo

Zero-shot burned area mapping with the Segment Anything Model (SAM): a label-free framework for post-fire environmental assessment.

Accurate and rapid mapping of burned areas is critical for understanding the impacts of forest fires on ecosystems, the carbon cycle, and post-fire recovery processes. Traditional pixel-based approaches often provide limited accuracy due to spectral confusion, topographic variability, and sensitivity to empirically defined threshold values. Although deep learning frameworks such as U-Net, DeepLab, and SegFormer have achieved substantial improvements in spatial accuracy in recent years, their operational scalability remains constrained by the need for labeled training data and region-specific r

Sprayable EGCG-Grafted Alginate Hydrogels Embedded with Platelet Exosomes: Functional Synergy of Immunomodulation and Angiogenesis for Accelerating Burn Wound Healing.

Burn wounds were often entrapped in inflammatory cascades and highly vulnerable to bacterial infection. Meanwhile, accumulated necrotic tissue and impaired vessels further aggravated local ischemia, thereby impeding the wound healing process. Herein, a sprayable hydrogel based on EGCG-grafted oxidized alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan/platelet exosomes (AECP hydrogel) was fabricated. Covalent grafting of EGCG onto alginate endowed an AECP hydrogel with a controllable release profile for a sustained functional effect of EGCG. Due to the inherent bioactivity of EGCG, the AECP hydrogel could elimin

Feasibility of Mobile Phone-Based Virtual Reality as a Non-pharmacologic Acute Procedural Pain Management Intervention in an Inpatient Burn Center.

Burn patients often experience severe procedural pain throughout hospitalization, and poorly controlled pain is a significant predictor of long-term psychological adjustment post-injury. Virtual Reality (VR) presents a promising adjunctive approach to pharmacological analgesics by redirecting patients' attention away from painful stimuli using immersive, multidimensional environments. Recent technological advances have made VR more affordable, portable, and hands-free permitting the head-mounted display to be easily transported with minimal set up, particularly conducive to hospital environmen

A systematic review of burn-related mortality and morbidity along with preventive strategies existing in the Arabian Peninsula over the last 5 years.

UNLABELLED: This systematic review looks at burn injuries in the Gulf region over the past five years, focusing on how often they occur, their survival and complication rates, and current prevention efforts. To gather the data, two reviewers independently searched five major databases and checked article reference lists to make sure no relevant studies were missed. The team then used the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) to evaluate the quality and potential bias of the gathered research. The following sections present these regional findings and discuss the need for better burn management systems

Lower Extremity Compartment Syndrome Due to Capillary Leak Syndrome Following 60% Total Body Surface Area Burn Injury.

Lower extremity compartment syndrome (LECS) following burn injury in the absence of circumferential burns is rare. Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) is a condition characterized by systemic capillary hyperpermeability and can be triggered by the multisystem inflammatory response seen in extensive burns. The resulting intravascular fluid loss into the interstitial space can elevate compartment pressures and contribute to the development of compartment syndrome. In the case presented here, the patient developed LECS in the setting of severe burn injury with clinical and laboratory evidence consisten

Development and Validation of The Skin Graft Loss Risk Estimator: An Interpretable Machine Learning-Driven Tool for Individualized Assessment in Burn Patients.

BACKGROUND: Skin graft failure is a significant complication in burn care that prolongs recovery, compromises surgical outcomes, and necessitates repeat operations. Accurate risk assessment is challenging due to a complex interplay of patient and injury factors, underscoring the need for objective, data-driven predictive tools. We developed and validated an interpretable machine learning (ML)-driven tool to provide individualized, data-driven risk assessment for skin graft loss in burn patients. METHODS: A cohort study of patients who had autologous skin grafting from the American Burn Associ

Recombinant Sgp130 attenuates alkali-burn cornea through inhibition of IL-6 trans-signaling: From production to therapeutic application.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a highly promising therapeutic target across numerous pathological conditions. This cytokine mediates two distinct downstream signaling cascades: classic signaling, which primarily regulates regenerative and anti-inflammatory processes; and trans-signaling, which drives pathological and pro-inflammatory processes. Non-selective IL-6 inhibition affects both pathways, carrying significant risk of severe clinical adverse effects. Soluble glycoprotein 130 (Sgp130) enables pathway-specific blockade of IL-6 trans-signaling only, making it a compelling candidate for treating d

Efficacy of magnesium-calcium ionic oral rinse for primary burning mouth syndrome: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Primary burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic idiopathic orofacial pain condition characterized by persistent intraoral burning sensation in the absence of clinically evident mucosal lesions. Its pathophysiology is considered multifactorial, with neuropathic mechanisms playing a central role. Current treatments are constrained by systemic adverse effects. Modulation of the oral mucosal ionic microenvironment has been proposed as a potential local therapeutic strategy. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of magnesium-calcium oral rinse(test oral rinse)in patie

Antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from burn infections - an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major causative agent of burn wound infections, frequently characterised by multidrug resistance (MDR) and robust biofilm formation, which limit the efficacy of conventional antibiotics. 1,3,4-Oxadiazole derivatives have emerged as potential antimicrobial and antibiofilm agents; however, comprehensive evaluations against clinical MDR isolates from burn patients remain limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the in vitro antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of a synthesised 1,3,4-oxadiazole compound against clinical MDR P. aeruginosa i

Lessons Learned from Surgical Management of the Largest Burned Patient Covered with Skin Isograft from His Monozygotic Twin Brother.

Background: Early excision and autologous split-thickness skin grafting are the cornerstone of surgical management in severe burn injuries. In patients with extremely extensive deep burns, the lack of available donor sites represents a major life-threatening limitation. In the exceptional situation of monozygotic twins, skin isografting offers a unique solution by providing immunologically compatible skin without the risk of rejection. Case report: We report the case of a 33-year-old man who sustained flame burns involving 95% of his total body surface area, resulting in an extremely poor init
