Provider perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 on treatment of substance use and opioid use disorders among American Indian and Alaska Native adults.

INTRODUCTION: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities are more likely to suffer negative consequences related to substance misuse. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the opioid poisoning crisis, in combination with ongoing treatment barriers resulting from settler-colonialism, systemic oppression and racial discrimination. AI/AN adults are at greatest risk of COVID-19 related serious illness and death. In collaboration with an Indigenous community advisory board and Tribal leadership, this study explored AI/AN treatment provider perceptions of client-relatives' (i.e., SUD treatment re

Ethical and Jurisprudential Considerations of Stem Cell Donation in the Gulf.

Stem cell donation has become an important component of contemporary regenerative medicine, particularly in the treatment of hematological malignancies, immune deficiencies, genetic disorders, and selected metabolic diseases. However, its implementation in Muslim Gulf societies remains shaped by medical awareness, legal clarity, institutional readiness, and religious -ethical considerations. In this study, we examined community and physician perspectives on stem cell donation in the Gulf Cooperation Council context, with particular attention to Islamic jurisprudence, ethical values, and regula

Factors influencing antibiotic-resistant bacteria colonization among community and hospitalized individuals in Chennai, India: an Antibiotic Resistance in Communities and Hospitals (ARCH) study.

BACKGROUND: Colonization with antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) increases the risk for antibiotic-resistant infections. Our previous study documented a high level of colonization with ARBs in a suburban area of Chennai, a city in South India. Here, we aimed to identify potential risk factors for colonization with extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (ESCrE) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). METHODS: Adult participants were enrolled in community and hospital surveys from November 2020 through March 2022, and ARB isolation was done from stool specimens. Mu

Psychological Agency Attenuates the Link Between Discrimination and COVID-19 Burnout in Latine-Serving Community Health Workers.

Community health workers that serve low income Latine families (Latine-serving CHWs) play a crucial role in reducing health disparities, yet frequently encounter discrimination, which may elevate their risk for burnout. Burnout not only harms these CHWs' wellbeing but also deprives communities of the full benefit of CHWs' service. Identifying factors that buffer against these effects, such as psychological agency, can offer valuable insights for supporting CHWs. This study examines (1) the association between discrimination and burnout among Latine-serving CHWs and (2) the role of agency as a

Ecological characteristics of the truncal skin mycobiome in acne and its association with doxycycline exposure.

Truncal acne significantly impairs quality of life yet remains underexplored relative to facial acne, particularly with respect to fungal ecology. The trunk represents a distinct cutaneous niche characterized by thicker epidermis, larger follicular units, and frequent occlusion, and harbors a high abundance of Malassezia species. In this study, we used internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) amplicon sequencing to characterize the truncal mycobiome in patients with acne and in healthy controls and to compare fungal community features across doxycycline exposure groups. Although serial sampling wa

From Weaving Healthy Families to Weaving Healthy Communities: An Indigenist Dissemination and Implementation Approach Integrating Talking Circle Feedback.

A gap exists both in culturally grounded, evidence-informed Native American and Alaska Native (NA/AN) programs and in dissemination and implementation (D&I) approaches to replicate, translate, and adapt such clinical programs. D&I approaches grounded in Indigenous knowledge are needed to translate evidence-informed programs effectively into real-world settings. The purpose of this article is to (a) outline the Weaving Healthy Communities (WHC) D&I approach, with a focus on talking/sharing circles, and (b) provide results of talking/sharing circle feedback from the culturally adapted and effica

Ho'oulu Me Ke Ikaika (Grow With Strength): An Approach to the Care of Adolescent and Young Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer.

BackgroundAny cancer experience can adversely affect the psychosocial health of adolescent and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer. This can lead to social withdrawal, educational/employment issues, depression, anxiety, and risky behavior. There is an unmet need for comprehensive AYA cancer survivorship care that uses a tailored approach rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Community-based survivorship groups that focus on psychosocial needs of patients could enhance survivorship care. These groups have the ability to use an observation-based approach to provide long-term surveillan

Use of a generative pre-trained transformer-based virtual patient for health assessment and communication training in nursing education: A mixed-methods study.

AIM: This study evaluated the use of a generative pre-trained transformer (GPT)-based virtual patient in nursing education. BACKGROUND: In nursing education, conventional training methods such as interactions with real-life or standardized patients exhibit limitations such as psychological distress, repetitive training and insufficient cost- and time-effectiveness. Because of their capacity to emulate human-like dialogue, GPTs have emerged as a valuable resource for educational nursing activities. DESIGN: This study employed a mixed-methods design. METHODS: A GPT-based virtual patient with

Opportunities for Low-Barrier HIV Testing in the U.S. Deep South: Findings from a Survey in Alabama.

The HIV epidemic remains a critical public health challenge in the Southern U.S., where barriers such as healthcare shortages, structural racism, and social determinants of health exacerbate disparities. Mobile- and self-HIV testing offer promising approaches to address these barriers. Partnering with a community-based healthcare organization in Alabama, we surveyed 181 individuals accessing facility- and community-based HIV testing from August 2022 to November 2023. Most participants were Black (92%), women (78%), and heterosexual (83%), with 73% reporting annual incomes below $50,000. While
