Purchase of hormonal contraceptive methods after delivery: a population-based study from Finland.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum contraception start and use are important to avoid unplanned pregnancy and to optimise birth spacing. There is inconsistent knowledge concerning the background factors influencing the type and timing of contraceptive initiation and adherence after delivery. METHODS: This was a historic cohort study. We identified 26 650 women that delivered between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2019, using the Finnish Medical Birth Register. Postpartum follow-up time for each woman was 1 year. The primary outcome of the study was postpartum purchase of hormonal contraception from a pha

Perspectives on Contraceptive Research for Individuals with Increased Thrombosis Risk: A Qualitative Exploration of Patients and Clinicians.

OBJECTIVES: Although most progestin-only contraceptives are generally considered safe for most patients at increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis, patients and clinicians may be wary of their use based on limited studies. Large prospective contraceptive studies with primary data collection would improve the evidence base for people at increased thrombosis risk. We therefore aimed to find solutions for recruitment and long-term retention of representative participants in large prospective studies of contraceptives for patients at increased risk of thrombosis, identify patient- and cli

Oral Contraceptive Pill Use is Associated with Lower Levels of Plasma Calprotectin in Premenopausal Women.

INTRODUCTION: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are increasingly recognized as having important roles in autoimmune disease pathogenesis. In many autoimmune diseases, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and lupus (SLE), premenopausal women have increased incidence. Understanding immunologic effects of exposures common in premenopausal women, such as oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use, is important to understanding autoimmune disease risk in women. We investigated the relationship between OCP use and circulating calprotectin, a NETosis marker relevant to autoimmune disease pathogenesis. METHODS:

Comparison of Substances in Combined Oral Contraceptives Used in Acne Vulgaris, Hirsutism, Migraine, and Dysmenorrhea.

Statistics from 2024 have shown that 50% of young women use contraception. Nowadays, it is not only used to prevent pregnancy. Positive effects of this treatment can be seen in cases of acne vulgaris, hirsutism, and painful menstruation. A controversial topic is the use of combined oral contraception (COC) in women with migraine with aura - it is contraindicated, but for headaches associated with the menstrual cycle, there is a chance of improvement, especially with the 28/0 regimen. This review assessed differences in the effects of substances contained in COC. Tablets containing ethinylestra

Sociodemographic factors associated with modern contraceptive use in Japan: an analysis of national survey data.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the sociodemographic characteristics associated with modern contraceptive use in Japan. This study investigated these associations using data from the National Fertility Survey. METHODS: Data were retrieved from the National Fertility Survey targeting unmarried individuals and married women in Japan. The analysis included unmarried individuals with sexual experience and sexually active married women intending to stop or space childbirths. Modern contraceptive use was examined in relation to sociodemographic characteristics, including age group, number of

Contraceptive Use and Discontinuation Among Adolescent Women in 55 Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Adolescent women aged 19 or younger make up a substantial and growing proportion of women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries. Several key features of the reproductive life course ground the need to disaggregate the contraceptive behaviors of adolescent women from those of older women, including relationship dynamics, resources and autonomy, and cultural and societal expectations regarding sexual activity and childbearing. Despite the importance and unique life course features of adolescent women, we lack the information about their contraceptive dynamics-especially their p

Drivers of contraceptive non-use among women and men who are not trying to get pregnant.

This study examines an inconsistency between an attitude and a behaviour: non-use of contraception among people who are not trying to get pregnant. More than one in four people in that situation report not using contraception 'sometimes' or 'always' and consequently face the risk of pregnancy. We test three potential explanations: acceptability of having (further) children; perceived low pregnancy risk; and perceived social pressure. Using 10 waves of the German pairfam panel, we estimate sex-specific between-within models, where each explanation is tested by several indicators. We find eviden

Complication of Nexplanon contraceptive implant requiring intramuscular removal from biceps: A Case Report.

Implantable contraceptives provide a temporary, long-acting, and reversible form of contraception. Implant migration is a rare complication, with potential damage to the musculature or neurovascular structures. This is a case of a Nexplanon implant migration into the biceps brachii muscle, requiring surgical removal. Implants that become non-palpable should be immediately visualized with imaging to prevent further nerve or vascular injury and subsequently be removed.

Rescue of male infertility by human PRSS55 in transgenic mice establishes a contraceptive research model.

The development of non-hormonal male contraceptives requires validated preclinical models. This study investigated whether human orthologs of two mouse testis-specific serine proteases, PRSS55 and TMPRSS12, both essential for male fertility in mice, could functionally rescue the infertility phenotypes of their respective knockout mouse lines. We generated transgenic mouse lines expressing human PRSS55 with either an extracellularly or intracellularly positioned C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (RES GPI or RES TM), and a line expressing human TMPRSS12 with a C-terminal 3xFLAG tag (T12 RES), all on their r

Combined oral contraceptives are associated with increased risk of developing gastroparesis in pre-menopausal women.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Females are disproportionately affected by gastroparesis. Sex hormones play a significant role. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of combined oral contraceptives (COC) on the development of gastroparesis and its related symptoms, medication use, and diagnostic testing in pre-menopausal women. METHODS: A population-based cohort study was conducted utilizing the TriNetX platform. The study group included pre-menopausal women. The effect of developing gastroparesis at least 30 days after initiating COC was assessed by comparing it to pre-menopausal women n

Eccentric training effects on hamstring muscles in oral contraceptive users and naturally menstruating women.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of eccentric resistance training on hamstring muscles properties in women using oral contraceptives (OC) and naturally menstruating women. METHODS: Before and after the training intervention, we measured maximal isometric and eccentric moment of the knee flexor muscles, thickness and shear wave velocity (SWV) of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), semitendinosus (ST) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles, and BFlh fascicle length using ultrasonography and dynamometry. RESULTS: The 12-week training intervention resulted in a modest but statistically signi

Cost-effective screening strategy to prevent venous thromboembolism in combined oral contraceptive users.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with a significant societal and economic burden. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) increase VTE risk by 2- to 6-fold, resulting in approximately 22,925 cases annually in the European Economic Area (EEA). Despite the high associated healthcare costs, which may reach 2.5 billion EUR annually, current international guidelines, including those from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH),

Hormonal contraceptive use and type matter: Distinct cortisol patterns and cortisol-mood relations.

Hormonal contraceptives (HCs) are used by millions of people globally; however, the implications of HC use on mood and neuroendocrine processes are not fully understood. Thus, the main goal of the current investigation was to assess stress, mood, quality of life, and cortisol patterns in individuals who were naturally cycling or using HC. Another goal was to differentiate HC type, assessing relations in combined oral contraceptive (COC) versus progestin-only HC users. Young females (N = 191) in first- and second-year university (Mage = 19.02, SD = 1.04) completed online self-report stress and

Evaluation of the safety profile of prolonged-release EE/DNG oral contraceptives: a critical appraisal.

Recent publications have suggested that a novel prolonged-release formulation of ethinylestradiol (EE) 20 µg and dienogest (DNG) 2 mg offers improved bleeding profiles and minimal impact on coagulation. These conclusions, however, are based on incomplete safety assessments and potentially misleading pharmacokinetic assumptions. This critical appraisal highlights several concerns: (1) discrepancies between published and regulatory data on bleeding/spotting rates compared to established EE/DRSP combinations; (2) inappropriate reliance on clotting-time-based activated protein C resistance (APCr)

Oral contraceptive use is associated with a reduction in the physical size of fallopian tube p53 signatures.

OBJECTIVE: Oral contraceptives reduce ovarian cancer risk, but the mechanism of risk reduction is not understood. We examined whether oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use influences p53 signatures, which are putative early fallopian tube precursors for high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas. METHODS: For this retrospective cohort (n = 250) of subjects aged over 50 years who had fallopian tubes removed at the time of a benign gynecologic procedure, we used health records to identify 72 patients who used OCPs for at least 5 years and 178 subjects with no history of OCP use.
