The effect of unhealthy lifestyle on the pathogenesis of sick sinus syndrome: A life-guiding review.

Sick sinus syndrome (SSS), also known as sinoatrial node dysfunction, has been widely concerned by the medical community. The incidence rate of SSS is increasingly, which poses a great threat to public health. Through decades of repeated research in the medical field, great progress has been made in the pathogenesis of SSS and the interaction mechanism between SSS and other cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, we pay special attention to the mental stimulation factors under various pressures such as society and work, and the influence of smoking, drinking, and unhealthy diet on the pathogen

Microbial influence on triggering and treatment of host cancer: An intestinal barrier perspective.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with complex complications that may lead to tumors. However, research on the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to chronic immune diseases and cancer pathogenesis triggered by the inflammatory environment remains limited. An imbalance in the host gut microbiota often accompanies intestinal inflammation. The delayed recovery of the dysregulated intestinal microbiota may exacerbate systemic inflammatory responses, multiorgan pathology, and metabolic disorders. This delay may also facilitate bacterial translocation. This review examined the relatio

Dietary Supplementation of Ancientino Ameliorates Dextran Sodium Sulfate-Induced Colitis by Improving Intestinal Barrier Function and Reducing Inflammation and Oxidative Stress.

Ancientino, a complex dietary fiber supplement mimicking the ancient diet, has improved chronic heart failure, kidney function, and constipation. However, its effect on ulcerative colitis is unknown. This study explores the impact of Ancientino on colitis caused by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and its mechanisms. Data analyses showed that Ancientino alleviated bodyweight loss, colon shortening and injury, and disease activity index (DAI) score, regulated levels of inflammatory factors (tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin 6 (I

Lifestyle Approach and Medical Therapy of Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease.

Lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) is common among patients with several risk factors, such as elderly, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Notably, PAD is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular complications. Non-invasive interventions are beneficial to improve morbidity and mortality among patients with PAD. Traditional risk factors like smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia play a significant role in the development of PAD. Still, additional factors such as mental health, glycemic control, diet, exercise, obesity management, lipid-lowerin

The administration of Enterococcus faecium SF68 counteracts compositional shifts in the gut microbiota of diet-induced obese mice.

Microorganisms with probiotic properties are eliciting an increasing interest as coadjuvants in the prevention and treatment of obesity through modulation of the gut microbiota. In this study, a probiotic formulation based on Enterococcus faecium SF68 was administered to mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) to evaluate its efficacy in reducing body mass gain and in modulating the intestinal bacterial composition. Both stool and ileum samples were collected from untreated and treated mice and absolute abundances of specific taxa constituting the gut microbial consortium were evaluated. SF68 admi

Forkhead Box i2 Transcription Factor Regulates Systemic Energy Metabolism Via Neuropeptide AgRP.

The neuropeptide AgRP is essential for maintaining systemic energy homeostasis. In the current study, we show that hypothalamic Foxi2, as a novel regulator of nutrient sensing, controls systemic energy metabolism by specifically stimulating AgRP expression. Foxi2 was highly expressed in the hypothalamus, and its expression was induced by fasting. Immunofluorescence assays demonstrated that Foxi2 was localized in AgRP neurons. We stereotactically injected adeno-associated virus to selectively overexpress Foxi2 in AgRP-IRES-Cre mice and found that Foxi2 overexpression in AgRP neurons specificall

Ochratoxin A Induces Steatosis via PPARγ-CD36 Axis.

Ochratoxin A(OTA) is considered to be one of the most important contaminants of food and feed worldwide. The liver is one of key target organs for OTA to exert its toxic effects. Due to current lifestyle and diet, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been the most common liver disease. To examine the potential effect of OTA on hepatic lipid metabolism and NAFLD, C57BL/6 male mice received 1 mg/kg OTA by gavage daily. Compared with controls, OTA increased lipid deposition and TG accumulation in mouse livers. In vitro OTA treatment also promoted lipid droplets accumulation in primary hep

Enhancing the Appearance of the "Six-Pack" Muscles Using Cryolipolysis: A Safe and Effective Method.

Many individuals desire a defined and athletic body with "six-pack" abdominal muscles, but even with a strict regimen of diet and exercise, this result is unattainable for many. Cryolipolysis is a noninvasive method of reducing the subcutaneous adipose tissues lying above the rectus abdominis muscles, enhancing the six-pack appearance. Eleven nonobese adults with an average body mass index of 22.5 kg/m2 were enrolled in this study. All subjects were treated with the CoolSculpting cryolipolysis system, with most of them undergoing two rounds of treatment. Improvement in appearance of the abdomi

A randomized controlled trial of pharmacist-led therapeutic carbohydrate and energy restriction in type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be treated, and sometimes reversed, with dietary interventions; however, strategies to implement these interventions while addressing medication changes are lacking. We conducted a 12-week pragmatic, community-based parallel-group randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03181165) evaluating the effect of a low-carbohydrate (<50 g), energy-restricted diet (~850-1100 kcal/day; Pharm-TCR; n = 98) compared to treatment-as-usual (TAU; n = 90), delivered by community pharmacists, on glucose-lowering medication use, cardiometabolic health, and health-related quality of

Icariin Attenuates Diabetic Cardiomyopathy and Downregulates Extracellular Matrix Proteins in Heart Tissue of Type 2 Diabetic Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a serious complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), resulting in unfavorable prognosis. Icariin (ICA) is a major flavonoid isolated from the traditional oriental herbal medicine Epimedium that has been recently proved to show potential therapeutic efficacy on T2DM. The aim of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism of how ICA improved DCM in rat models. METHODS: To corroborate myocardial improvement by ICA, we managed to establish the T2DM rat model by streptozotocin (STZ) administration and high-glucose-high-fat diet. RESULTS

Zone-specific damage of the olfactory epithelium under protein restriction.

Oxidative stress causes tissue damage, affecting age-related pathologies. Protein restriction (PR) provides a powerful intervention strategy for reducing oxidative stress, which may have a positive effect on individual organs. However, it is unknown whether PR intervention influences the olfactory system. Here, we investigated how 10 months of PR could affect the cell dynamics of the olfactory epithelium (OE) in mice. We found that PR reduced age-related loss of outer hair cells in the cochlea, providing preventive effects against age-related hearing loss. In contrast, PR resulted in reduced m

Can food processing produce hypoallergenic egg?

Eggs and their derived products are common foods that can induce food allergic reaction, especially in children. The reported incidence of egg allergy is 1% to 2%, and its prevalence has rapidly increased in recent years. Currently, there is no approved treatment for it. The clinical guidance for this adverse food reaction is the complete elimination of egg (and their derived products) from diet, which is difficult due to the wide use of egg ingredients in food industry. Food processing methods can affect the conformational and/or linear epitopes of allergens and may change the allergenicity o

Efficacy of Enteral Nutrition by Double Elementary Diet Tube after Pylorus-Preserving Pancreatoduodenectomy.

Nutritional support after pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PpPD) is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of enteral nutrition (EN) via the double elementary diet (W-ED) tube after PpPD. One hundred two patients who received EN by the W-ED tube were compared with 52 patients who received total parental nutrition (TPN) previously. Clinicopathological and postoperative features were analyzed among the two groups. Patients with EN by the W-ED tube after PpPD had a lower incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula than those with TPN. The total protein and alb

The Effect of Lutein on Eye and Extra-Eye Health.

Lutein is a carotenoid with reported anti-inflammatory properties. A large body of evidence shows that lutein has several beneficial effects, especially on eye health. In particular, lutein is known to improve or even prevent age-related macular disease which is the leading cause of blindness and vision impairment. Furthermore, many studies have reported that lutein may also have positive effects in different clinical conditions, thus ameliorating cognitive function, decreasing the risk of cancer, and improving measures of cardiovascular health. At present, the available data have been obtaine

Mechanisms underlying blood pressure reduction by dietary inorganic nitrate.

Nitric oxide (NO) importantly contributes to cardiovascular homeostasis by regulating blood flow and maintaining endothelial integrity. Conversely, reduced NO bioavailability is a central feature during natural ageing and in many cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension. The inorganic anions nitrate and nitrite are endogenously formed after oxidation of NO synthase (NOS)-derived NO and are also present in our daily diet. Knowledge accumulated over the past two decades has demonstrated that these anions can be recycled back to NO and other bioactive nitrogen oxides via serial reductions

Age-dependent regulation of obesity and Alzheimer-related outcomes by hormone therapy in female 3xTg-AD mice.

Depletion of ovarian hormones at menopause is associated with increased Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. Hormone loss also increases central adiposity, which promotes AD development. One strategy to improve health outcomes in postmenopausal women is estrogen-based hormone therapy (HT), though its efficacy is controversial. The window of opportunity hypothesis posits that HT is beneficial only if initiated near the onset of menopause. Here, we tested this hypothesis by assessing the efficacy of HT against diet-induced obesity and AD-related pathology in female 3xTg-AD mice at early versus late mi

Risk Reduction Strategies in Breast Cancer Prevention.

Evaluating the risk of breast cancer makes it possible to identify women with a high risk of developing breast cancer in the future. Adopting a healthier lifestyle, involving diet and exercise, is one way of reducing this risk-but there are other, non-modifiable risk factors, such as family history, genetics and diagnosis of premalignant lesions. In this high-risk population, the tracking must be rigorous and involve the participation of the patient herself, earlier and more frequent clinical assessment, and the use of imaging screening. Agents such as tamoxifen, raloxifene and aromatase inhib

Effect of grape and other berries on cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death globally. Many cardiovascular risk factors can be modified through lifestyle modification, including dietary patterns that emphasize daily consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Recent observational and clinical studies suggest that flavonoids, especially those abundant in grapes and other berries, may be associated with health benefits, particularly cardiovascular benefits. Human clinical data support cardioprotective benefits of grapes through inhibition of platelet aggregation, decreased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation,

Effect of the red seaweed Mastocarpus stellatus intake on lipid metabolism and antioxidant status in healthy Wistar rats.

Health-promoting effect of dietary supplementation with the red seaweed Mastocarpus stellatus was studied. Its major component is dietary fibre (31.7/100 g dry weight), 72% as soluble fibre, mainly formed by carrageenans, sulphated-galactans of red seaweeds. Thus, rats were fed either a basal- or an algal-supplemented diet (10%). Then, lipid metabolism was assessed in serum, and reducing power measured in serum and caecum by FRAP method. Also, caecal pH was monitored and short chain fatty acids analysed by gas-liquid chromatography. Seaweed intake reduced significantly triglycerides and total
