Association Between Emotional Intelligence and Work Outcomes Among Midwives in Northern Ghana: A Path Analysis Study.

BACKGROUND: Emotional intelligence (EI) is increasingly recognized as an important factor influencing work outcomes. However, evidence on EI among midwives, particularly in northern Ghana, remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the association between self-reported EI and organizational commitment, work engagement, and job performance among midwives in the Tamale Metropolis. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional analytical design was employed among midwives (N = 254) working in the Tamale Metropolis. Data were analyzed using SAS JMP Pro Version 17.1 and R software Version 4.2.3.

Therapeutic Impact of Snoezelen Environments on Emotional Outcomes and Pain in Long-Term Care Residents with and Without Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults living in long-term care facilities are at increased risk of reduced psychoemotional well-being. Snoezelen multisensory environments have been proposed as person-centered interventions, although evidence remains inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Snoezelen environments on biopsychosocial outcomes in older adults living in long-term care facilities with and without dementia. METHODS: A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental repeated-measures design was applied. Participants completed eight sessions over four weeks with a self-controlled comparison pha

Distractor processing of emotional faces: behavioral and women-only fMRI findings on the perceptual load-dilution debate.

INTRODUCTION: The perceptual load-dilution debate asks whether reduced distractor interference under demanding visual conditions reflects limited perceptual capacity or competition from additional neutral items. Because this debate has relied largely on neutral stimuli, it remains unclear whether the same mechanisms govern emotionally meaningful distraction. We examined this question using an all-faces visual search paradigm that separated cue-based attentional demand from display composition while minimizing target-distractor category confounds. METHODS: In Experiment 1, 60 participants comp

Body image dissatisfaction and emotional eating across age and weight status: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity in older adults is associated with significant medical, functional, and psychological consequences, including body image dissatisfaction and maladaptive eating behaviors such as emotional eating. Although these associations have been extensively studied in younger populations, limited evidence is available in older adults with obesity. This study aimed to examine differences in body dissatisfaction by age and weight status and its association with emotional eating in adults and older adults with obesity. METHODS: 108 participants were included and divided into four subgrou

What shapes health-related quality of life in drug-resistant epilepsy? Clinical, emotional, and cognitive predictors.

PURPOSE: Clinical and psychological factors associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) are well established; however, the contribution of alexithymia and specific neurocognitive domains remains less well characterized. This study aimed to examine clinical, emotional, and neuropsychological correlates of HRQoL in patients with focal DRE, with particular emphasis on alexithymia and cognitive functioning. METHODS: Thirty-two patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and 38 with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) underwent comprehensive clinical, cog

Emotional Support Moderates Early Life Adversity's Impact on High Molecular Weight Adiponectin in Adolescent Females.

Early life adversity (ELA) has been linked to elevated inflammatory biomarkers and low circulating anti-inflammatory adiponectin levels among adults. Since inflammation is a key contributor to cardiometabolic diseases, lower adiponectin levels may be associated with an increased risk for these conditions. Women have a higher risk of cardiometabolic disease, so identifying mitigating factors specific to this population is crucial. Social support can mitigate the stress effects on cardiometabolic health, and emotional support is a particularly important functional component of social support for

PDE2A is involved in negative emotional behaviors via the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway in the SPS&S model.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by negative affective symptoms, including anxiety, depression, anhedonia, and fear. The molecular mechanisms underlying these symptoms remain poorly understood. Phosphodiesterase 2A (PDE2A), a regulator of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling, has been implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the role of the PDE2A-cAMP-protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway in negative emotional behaviors induced by traumatic stress. METHODS: Transcriptomic datasets were analyzed to ide

Emotional Eating and Abdominal Obesity: A Narrative Review of the Potential Mechanisms Underlying Their Relationship and Emerging Interventions for Their Management.

Abdominal obesity (AO), assessed through waist circumference (WC), has become a validated complementary anthropometric marker for cardiometabolic risk assessment. Growing evidence suggests that emotional eating (EE), characterized by food intake in response to emotions rather than physiological hunger cues, may be linked to AO by promoting dysregulated eating patterns rich in palatable and energy-dense foods. This behavior may contribute, directly or indirectly, to excess visceral fat accumulation. An analysis of the current evidence was conducted to examine the psychological, physiological, n

Self-Assessment of Social-Emotional Skills in Primary Students: Psychometric Evaluation of the Digital Screening Instrument GraSEF.

Early assessment of social-emotional skills is crucial for identifying children at risk and implementing targeted interventions. To address the scarcity of reliable self-reports for young children, we developed the GraSEF, a digital screening instrument for primary students. GraSEF utilizes a situational judgment format to assess internalizing/externalizing behavior, social withdrawal, problem-solving, alongside self-reports for prosocial behavior and emotion regulation strategies. This study examines the instrument's psychometric properties in a sample of 474 s-graders in Austria (Mage = 7.66

A scoping review of emotion and non-cognitive measures of decision-making ability in older adults by the ARMCADA study.

INTRODUCTION: Decision-making is a complex form of cognitive function that declines with age and is highly susceptible to impairment from dementia due to Alzheimer's and related neurogenerative diseases. Emotions and other non-cognitive assets are also believed to influence decision-making ability. The Advancing Reliable Measurement in Cognitive Aging and Decision-making Ability (ARMCADA) research initiative seeks to understand how measures of emotion and non-cognitive influences of decision-making (ENC DM) have been used in research and clinical settings. The scoping review examined the recen

Explaining emotion co-occurrence: Comparison of parsimonious, formal theories using multimodal, within-person data.

Emotion theories should explain when and how emotions co-occur. Investigating emotion co-occurrence, Lange and Zickfeld (2023) found support for the network theory of emotions. This theory suggests that emotions co-occur because the networks of interacting components that represent emotions partly overlap. However, Lange and Zickfeld's evidence is limited to self-reports and between-person analyses. We substantially extended their work by applying between- and within-person network analytic tools to self-report, physiological (i.e., heart rate, respiration rate, skin conductance, goosebumps),

Visual attention towards virtual humans as a function of spatial distance and emotional expression: an eye-tracking study.

During social interactions, the way people regulate the space between each other (i.e., the interpersonal distance) reflects the type and quality of the relationship existing between the interactants. Shorter interpersonal distances are for intimate relationships; larger interpersonal distances are for formal social interactions. Thus, we spontaneously choose the appropriate interpersonal distance to feel comfortable and avoid distress. Moreover, when interacting with other people or the environment, the space surrounding the body acts as a protective buffer against potential threats: this spa

Effects of genetic risk for depression and household socioeconomic status on emotional behavior and brain development in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization ranks depression as the leading non-fatal contributor to the global burden of disease. Research shows that early intervention before clinical onset leads to better outcomes. To study depression at this pre-onset stage, risk can be evaluated through depressive prodromal behaviors and associated brain biomarkers. Both environmental and genetic factors independently contribute to depression vulnerability, yet little work has examined how they interact. We therefore examined whether the socioeconomic status (SES) predictor of family income-to-needs ratio (

A neuroimaging functional connectivity signature of emotional conflict monitoring predicting cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders. Changes in the connections between brain regions responsible for emotions and memory might play a role in the reduced cognitive function observed in individuals with diabetes. Utilizing machine learning approaches on neuroimaging data shows potential for exploring these intricate associations. A research study was carried out with 40 individuals diagnosed with T2D and 30 control participants, all of whom were middle-aged and right-handed. The participants underwent neuropsychological assessments and fMR
