Resistance exercise alleviates overactive bladder by attenuating detrusor oxidative stress via peroxynitrite reduction.

Overactive bladder (OAB) remains challenging to treat due to drug intolerance and limited efficacy of behavioral therapies. The mechanistic basis by which exercise improves bladder function is poorly understood. Here, we established a clinically translatable resistance exercise model using graded treadmill loading (5-15% body weight [BW], 10-30 min/day) in a cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced OAB rat model to identify the optimal therapeutic intensity and delineate redox-related mechanisms. Functional (urodynamics, urine spot test), MRI imaging, histological, immunofluorescence, and untargeted met

Cardiorespiratory response to different aerobic exercise modalities in people with advanced multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience physiological deconditioning, notably the loss of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Exercise training is effective for improving CRF in people with mild-to-moderate MS; however, the effect of exercise on CRF in people with advanced MS remains unclear. The objective of this repeated-measures study of acute exercise was to characterize the cardiorespiratory response of people with advanced MS (i.e., wheelchair users) to three aerobic exercise modalities. METHODS: Eighteen people with advanced MS (n = 15 female; mean age = 60.7 ± 11.1 yea

Characterizing virtual community exercise programs for people with mobility limitations: a scoping review.

Virtual delivery of exercise programs can overcome barriers associated with accessing in-person programs for people with mobility limitations. Despite the growing number of virtual programs, several gaps remain, including how these programs are delivered and the specific strategies used to engage participants safely. We aimed to describe the intervention and methodological characteristics of virtual community exercise programs for adults with mobility limitations. We conducted a scoping review of virtual community exercise programs for adults with health conditions associated with mobility lim

Palm Cooling's Heart Rate and Thermal Impact on Exercise in Multiple Sclerosis Patients.

Heat strain in multiple sclerosis patients during exercise limits their benefits from this treatment. One prior study examined this topic but did not measure thermal outcomes and constitutes a knowledge gap. The current pilot study assessed palm cooling for its impact on heart rates and thermal measures. Using a randomized within-subjects design, nine multiple sclerosis patients performed two 25-minute cycle ergometry workouts against 65 and 45% of their Astrand-Rhyming-based workloads. Heart rates, thermal flux, palm and tympanic temperatures were examined using two-way analyses of variance w

Hybrid Pulmonary Rehabilitation Improves Cardiorespiratory Exercise Fitness in Formerly Hospitalised Long COVID Patients.

Background/Objectives: Supervised pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is effective in improving cardiorespiratory fitness in non-hospitalised individuals with long COVID. However, there is limited evidence regarding PR-induced improvements in cardiorespiratory parameters in previously hospitalised COVID-19 survivors. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a hybrid PR programme (outpatient followed by a digital intervention) on exercise tolerance, cardiorespiratory adaptations, functional capacity and quality of life outcomes in previously hospitalised COVID-19 survivors. Methods: Forty-two pa

Neurobiological role and therapeutic potential of exercise-induced irisin in Alzheimer's disease management.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a significant obstacle in today's healthcare landscape, with limited effective treatments. Recent studies have revealed encouraging findings about how exercise-triggered irisin might help slow down the advancement of AD. Irisin, a myokine, released during physical activity, has garnered significant attention for its pleiotropic effects, extending beyond its traditional role in metabolic regulation. This review explores irisin's multifaceted potential in combating AD. Research indicates that irisin enhances synaptic plasticity, crucial for learning and memory, and

Physical exercise modulates plasma irisin levels in endurance athletes: Implications for Parkinson's disease.

Physical exercise (PE) improves clinical outcomes in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) through unclear mechanisms. Irisin, a neuroprotective protein released by myocytes during PE, may play a role, but in vivo data in PD are limited. We investigated plasma irisin in a unique PD population engaged in chronic, intense PE. Ninety-three participants were classified based on both disease status (PD versus healthy controls, HC), and PE level (sedentary versus endurance athletes). Endurance athletes included subjects regularly participating in endurance sports (triathlon/long-distance maratho

TBI history and psychological symptom improvements following exercise therapies among U.S. service members.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and debilitating mental health disorder that is commonly comorbid with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the U. S. military population. Exercise, particularly in natural environments, has been shown to effectively reduce depression and comorbid PTSD symptoms. However, little is known about whether history of TBI moderates symptom improvements following exercise interventions. Previous research has largely shown that military personnel with a history of TBI similarly benefited from evide

Relationship between exercise transcutaneous oxygen pressure measurements with constant and graded treadmill tests.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise transcutaneous oxygen pressure measurement (Exercise-TcPO2) that has been validated with a constant-load treadmill protocol, is useful to assess patients with suspected lower-extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). To date, nothing is known about its use with a graded protocol. The aim of this study is to compare the Exercise-TcPO2 results obtained in patients with suspected PAD using a graded Gardner-Skinner (3.2 km/h, 2% grade increase every 2 min) versus a constant modified Strandness (3.2 km/h, 10% grade) treadmill test. METHODS: Patients with suspected PAD were

Cold aerobic exercise mitigates NAFLD fibrosis through UBAP2L-regulated TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can progress to fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, with TGF-β playing a key role. UBAP2L regulates TGF-β expression, but its role in NAFLD remains unclear. While exercise improves NAFLD and cold exposure enhances lipid metabolism, their combined effects on NAFLD-induced fibrosis are unknown. This study examines whether exercise with cold exposure attenuates NAFLD-induced fibrosis via the UBAP2L-mediated TGF-β/SMAD2/3 pathway. Fifty 5-week-old male C57BL/6N mice were assigned to five groups: normal control (C), high-fat diet (H), high-fat diet with

Comparative Electrocardiographic Analysis Between Physical Exercise Practitioners and Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The trained heart adapts through geometric changes influenced by concentric and eccentric hypertrophy, depending on the predominance of the isometric or dynamic components of the exercise performed. Additionally, alterations in heart rhythm may occur due to increased vagal system activity. Cardiological evaluation with an electrocardiogram (ECG) aims to identify cardiac conditions that could temporarily or permanently disqualify an athlete from competition. This study sought to compare electrocardiographic findings in regular exercisers with those observed in athletes and to correlate these fi

Hemodynamic effects of small abdominal aortic aneurysm morphologies under resting and exercise conditions.

This study investigated how low-intensity exercise affects hemodynamics in small saccular and fusiform abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Patient-specific CFD simulations were performed under resting and exercise conditions. At rest, saccular AAAs exhibited smaller low-shear, high-oscillatory, and high-activation regions than fusiform AAAs. Exercise eliminated low-shear zones and reduced oscillatory behavior but induced high-shear jets impacting saccular walls, while fusiform AAAs showed more uniform flow. These findings suggest that low-intensity exercise improves adverse hemodynamics and ach
