The psychological impacts of COVID-19: a study of frontline physicians and nurses in the Arab world.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV2) pandemic is wreaking havoc on healthcare systems and causing serious economic, social, and psychological anguish around the globe. Healthcare workers (HCWs) who diagnose and care for COVID-19 patients have been shown to suffer burnout, stress, and anxiety. METHODS: In this study, we collected data from 150 frontline HCWs who had close contact with COVID-19 patients at several health facilities in the Sultanate of Oman. The participants completed an online survey that included the Perceived Stress Scale, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and the WHO-5

[Advances in the research of clinical treatment of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation after burns].

Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are complications commonly seen in burn patients after wound healing, which may have seriously adverse impact on the appearances of the patients. The change of skin color in the exposed areas such as the face and hands may cause great psychological burden on the patients. While the occurrence and development mechanisms of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation post burns are unclear, it is generally believed to be associated with excess or deficiency of melanin content in the epidermis. Therefore, the therapeutic strategies of hyperpigmentation or hypopig

Psychogenic Gait Disorder Complicating Recovery After Concussion: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairment is common after concussion. "Dizziness" is associated with prolonged recovery after concussion. Most often each of these symptoms is considered to be of vestibular origin. However, whether or not there are psychological etiologies of gait instability that complicate concussion recovery has been less fully explored. METHODS: A chart review was performed of all patients seen between 2017 and 2019 in a weekly pediatric traumatic brain injury clinic. RESULTS: Of eighty-four patients with traumatic brain injury, five were found to have developed a classic psychogenic g

Specificity and item endorsement rates of personality assessment inventory over-reporting scales across ethnic, gender, and diagnostic groups in a forensic inpatient sample.

The accurate evaluation of response style, particularly with respect to overreporting, is imperative in forensic settings wherein an external incentive to feign exists. Given the high cost of false positive errors in this context, as well as the associated cost of false negative errors, evaluators need to ensure that overreporting methods are effective with the unique patient populations with whom they work. Complicating this issue is that forensic samples often differ in predictable ways from the normative samples upon which typical psychological assessment instruments were normed. The purpos

Gut Feelings: How Microbiota Might Impact the Development and Course of Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) can probably be regarded as a "model" for studying the interaction of nutrition with the gut-brain axis, which has drawn increased attention from researchers and clinicians alike. The gut microbiota influences somatic effects, such as energy extraction from food and body weight gain, as well as appetite, gut permeability, inflammation and complex psychological behaviors, such as depression or anxiety, all of which play important roles in AN. As nutrition is one of the main factors that influence the gut microbiota, nutritional restriction and selective eating in AN are li

The growth of gossip: Socialization of relational aggression from adolescence to emerging adulthood.

The extant literature suggests that relational aggression appears in early childhood, and gradually increases throughout adolescence. However, very little research has examined the growth of relational aggression from adolescence to emerging adulthood. In addition, research generally examines socializing factors of relational aggression, such as parenting, peers, siblings, or media in isolation. Accordingly, the aim of the current study was to examine these socializing factors conjunctively as predictors of the growth of relational aggression over time. Participants consisted of 500 adolescent

A Rare Cause of Extremely Loud Expiratory Stridor in a 11-Year-Old Patient.

Stridor can be a very alarming symptom in children, as it is typically caused by turbulent airflow through a partially obstructed airway, due to an organic cause. An abnormal respiratory sound can induce the suspicion of a life-threatening clinical condition and requires an immediate diagnostic assessment. The aim of this article is to describe a very peculiar case of loud expiratory stridor, with an abrupt onset and no other associated symptoms, occurring in an 11-year-old girl. The stridor sounds ceased only during sleep at night. Videolaryngoscopy demonstrated that the anatomy and patency o

Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction in children and adolescents: are we listening?

Exertional dyspnoea among children and adolescents is a common presenting complaint to general practitioners. Exertional dyspnoea is most commonly attributed to exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), but there are several other causes including hyperventilation syndrome, breathlessness associated with normal exercise limitation and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO). The symptoms of EILO include stridor, throat tightness and difficulty on inspiration. If these are mistaken for EIB, children will receive asthma therapy. The underlying mechanism of EILO includes closure of the la

Stigmatization and knowledge of anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: To further understand the stigma, attitudes towards, and recognition of Anorexia Nervosa (AN), the current study utilized both stigma and mental health literacy methodology. This study also included another psychological disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD) and a normal, lonely female (C) as comparison conditions. METHODS: Male (291) and female (576) undergraduate students read a vignette describing one of the conditions. Participants then rated the vignettes on general personality characteristics, condition recognition, perceived seriousness and need for treatment. RESULTS: Ma

Examination of a day programme for eating disorders: impact on 3-month follow-up by psychiatric comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: The two aims of this preliminary investigation were to use a case series design to examine outcomes of a day programme (DP) for eating disorders and to investigate whether the presence of baseline psychiatric comorbidities moderated outcomes 3 months after discharge. METHOD: Linear mixed modelling was used to investigate changes over time in the 91 participants who had commenced the DP by April 2019; 87 (96%) female, 61 (67%) with a DSM-5 diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. The Great Irish Famine (1845-52) and the Irish asylum system: remembering, forgetting, and remembering again.

The Great Irish Famine (1845-52) saw the Irish population fall by 20% as one million people died and another million emigrated. The Famine occurred at a time when the Irish asylums were growing rapidly anyway, so its precise effects on mental health are difficult although not impossible to study. Three groups merit consideration. First, for adults living through the Famine, starvation and poverty contributed to the continued rise in asylum presentations. Second, babies in utero during the Famine were reported to have accounted for an increase in first admissions when they reached the high-risk

Neurocognitive Adaptation and Mental Health Vulnerability Following Maltreatment: The Role of Social Functioning.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with a lifetime increase in risk of mental health disorder. We propose that such vulnerability may stem in large part from altered patterns of social functioning. Here, we highlight key findings from the psychological and epidemiological literature indicating that early maltreatment experience compromises social functioning and attenuates social support in ways that increase mental health vulnerability. We then review the extant neuroimaging studies of children and adolescents, focusing on three domains implicated in social functioning: threat processing, r

Virtual reality applications for diagnosis, risk assessment and therapy of child abusers.

Despite the successful application of virtual reality (VR) in a wide variety of mental disorders and the obvious potentials that VR provides, the use of VR in the context of criminology and forensic psychology is sparse. For forensic mental health professionals, VR provides some advantages that outrun general advantages of VR, e.g., ecological validity and controllability of social situations. Most important seems to be the unique possibility to expose offenders and to train coping skills in virtual situations, which are able to elicit disorder-relevant behavior-without endangering others. VR

Contextual determinants of psychopathology. The singularity of attachment as a predictor of mental dysfunction.

The general aim of this research is to evaluate the singular weight of attachment relationships in psychopathology, to determine the point to which these relationships cannot be subsumed by other variables that are famously related to attachment, such as experience of stressful life events, social support, and coping styles. 172 people treated in mental health centers provided data related to these four aspects and about manifestations of psychopathology. Multiple linear regression analyses determined that 51% of the variance in the level of symptomatology is explained with six variables: two

Psychology and public policy: A 50-year adventure.

This article provides an overview of my research on children, families, and the law over the past 50 years, while also providing the context for psychological research and action during this time period. The general framework requires using autobiographical information to understand my primary goal of contributing to a research base for intervention and policy change, especially within the juvenile justice system. Overall, my research and action endeavors have been related to prevention, children, and the legal system with changing foci over time: (a) changing juvenile correctional settings, (

The Neurocognitive Bases of Human Volition.

Volition refers to a capacity for endogenous action, particularly goal-directed endogenous action, shared by humans and some other animals. It has long been controversial whether a specific set of cognitive processes for volition exist in the human brain, and much scientific thinking on the topic continues to revolve around traditional metaphysical debates about free will. At its origins, scientific psychology had a strong engagement with volition. This was followed by a period of disenchantment, or even outright hostility, during the second half of the twentieth century. In this review, I aim

[Understanding and treatment strategy for disc displacement of temporomandibular disorders].

Understanding and treatment strategy for disc displacement of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were discussed in the present review. It has been strongly recommended by the author that the treatment strategy for disc displacement, one subtype of TMD, should be mainly the reversible conservative treatment methods. The most important goal of treatment for disc displacement is to recover the mobility and function of the joint in order to improve the quality of the patient's life. Comprehensive assessments both from somatic and psychological aspects for each TMD patient are necessary, especially

Training therapists to work with people with intellectual disability in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services.

BACKGROUND: Current policy in the England suggests that people with intellectual disabilities should, where possible, access mainstream mental health services; this should include access to mainstream therapy services. It is likely that mainstream therapists will need training and support to work with people with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Sixty-eight therapists working in an English Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service received one- or 2-day training on working with people with intellectual disabilities. Measures of confidence, general therapeutic self-efficacy

Practical Recommendations of the Obesity Management Task Force of the European Association for the Study of Obesity for the Post-Bariatric Surgery Medical Management.

Bariatric surgery is today the most effective long-term therapy for the management of patients with severe obesity, and its use is recommended by the relevant guidelines of the management of obesity in adults. Bariatric surgery is in general safe and effective, but it can cause new clinical problems and is associated with specific diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic needs. For clinicians, the acquisition of special knowledge and skills is required in order to deliver appropriate and effective care to the post-bariatric patient. In the present recommendations, the basic notions needed to pro

The Role of Stress in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a multi-factorial systemic disorder which involves immune, genetic and environmental factors. Stress, in its various forms, plays an important role in gastrointestinal diseases and, in particular, in IBD. METHODS: Here, we focus on the environmental stressors in different aspects of IBD (pathogenesis, course and severity of disease) and, in particular, will evaluate the mechanisms by which they may influence IBD. RESULTS: The effect of stress on IBD might be mediated by autonomic nervous system and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. These ner
