A patient with AML (FAB M4Eo) developed EBV-LPD 1.5 months after allogeneic BMT from his one locus-mismatched mother, the diagnosis being confirmed on day +82. Attempts to eradicate the monoclonally proliferating LPD using chemotherapy (VP16/dexamethasone) followed by two doses of EBV-specific CTL and one dose of unstimulated donor leukocytes were not successful. We assume delay of infusions (day +100, +107) and insufficient CTL cell doses (total 9.2 x 10(6)) may have been responsible for the poor outcome in this case.

An electron microscopic study of peripheral leukocytes obtained from a 39 year old woman with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome was performed. Ceroid pigment granules were found within the lysosomes in 3.5% of monocytes and 5.4% of lymphocytes. Infrequently, pigment granules were also found in the parallel tubular arrays of lymphocytes. The lymphocytes containing ceroid pigment granules were confirmed to be T cells by immunoelectron microscopy. It was speculated that intralysosomal accumulation of ceroid pigment granules in Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome may be due to lysosomal dysfunction.

The Hyper-IgE-syndrome (Job-, Buckley-) is characterized by recurrent staphylococcal infections of the skin, the ears and the lungs, by an eczematoid dermatitis from early infancy on, and by extreme elevation of serum IgE. The inconstantly found decreased chemotaxis of the polymorphonuclear leukocytes seems to be a secondary sign of a so far unknown deficiency possibly of the T-cell mediated immunity. Thus, therapy is restricted to antibiotic and surgical treatment. Many patients have a typical coarse face and some involvement of the bones (osteoporosis, craniosynostosis).

Mature polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocytes (PMNL) from a 2.5-year-old female with infantile chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) were stimulated with phorbol myristate acetate or opsonized zymosan. The resulting enzymatic NADPH oxidation and the cellular O2- release and luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence were measured. The patient's PMNL responded normally in all respects. Thus, mature infantile CML PMNL undergo a normal respiratory burst following either soluble or particulate stimulation. Haematological changes produced by experimental Junin virus infection of a platyrrhine monkey, Callithrix jacchus were studied. Normocytic and normochromic anaemia appeared after 7 days post infection (p. i.), and increased steadily until day 21 p. i. Reticulocytes and circulating erythroblasts were elevated during the anaemia, reached a peak on day 7 p. i., and disappeared later. Platelets and leukocytes showed a significant decrease from days 14 and 18 p. i., respectively. These alterations could be attributed to the damage of bone marrow and lymphatic tissue.

In vivo microscopic study of the responses of the various segments of the hepatic microvascular system to adrenergic, cholinergic, and other aminergic substances and their antagonists have revealed the relative distribution of receptor sites in these various vessels. The results also suggest a possible interaction of cholinergic substances with periportal mast cells. The release of serotonin, histamine and possibly other products from these cells results in dramatic alterations in blood flow through the hepatic sinusoids due to the adhesion of leukocytes and platelets to the endothelium.

A 4-year-old boy with recurrent infections and his clinically healthy father showed a severe, isolated defect in bactericidal activity of peripheral neutrophil leukocytes (the mother and the only sister were normal). Lymph nodes, spleen and liver of the child presented a massive infiltration by macrophages. Such infiltration and the segmentary albinism of the hair resemble traits of the Chediak-Higashi syndrome, but some of the most relevant traits of this syndrome are absent, since all other neutrophil functions were normal in our patient.

A patient is presented who was short in stature and had an enlarged phallus, normal vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and bilateral testes but with a 45,X karyotype from peripheral leukocytes. This is believed to be the first such patient ever reported. Such patients and other previously described male hermaphrodites with a 45,X karyotype indicate that, contrary to the general rule that patients with 45,X karyotype do not require a laparotomy, patients with such a karyotype should be explored if their genitalia are ambiguous.

Despite the significant morphological changes that occur in the seminal vesicles with aging, the transcriptomic characteristics remain largely unexplored. To address this, we performed bulk RNA sequencing on seminal vesicle samples from mice aged 3, 13, and 21 months to uncover transcriptomic alterations. BACKGROUND: Seizures can be part of the clinical presentation of central nervous system (CNS) infections. We describe patients suspected of a neurological infection who present with a seizure and study diagnostic accuracy of clinical and laboratory features predictive of CNS infection in this population.
METHODS: We analyzed all consecutive patients presenting with a seizure from two prospective Dutch cohort studies, in which patients were included who underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination because of the suspicion of a CNS infection.

BACKGROUND: To study the bacteriological characteristics, risk factors, and treatment of multi-drug resistance (MDR) organisms in patients with diabetic foot infection.
METHODS: Patients with diabetic foot ulcer admitted to hospital from June 2018 to December 2019 (n = 180) were selected as clinical subjects. Demographic information, routine blood test, wound culture and sensitivity were collected. Risk factors of MDR bacteria were analyzed.
