Pain processing in the human brainstem and spinal cord before, during, and after the application of noxious heat stimuli.

Descending regulation of spinal cord responses to nociceptive signaling has a strong influence on pain perception. Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have indicated that in addition to reactive responses to nociceptive signals, there is a continuous component to regulation, and that it may vary with differences in pain sensitivity. We hypothesize that this continuous regulation component occurs routinely in fMRI studies before noxious stimulation, as well as during, and after stimulation. This hypothesis was tested by analyzing data from 59 healthy participants

Kernel duration and modulation gain in a coupled oscillator model and their implications on the progression of seizures.

The coupled oscillator model has previously been used for the simulation of neuronal activities in in vitro rat hippocampal slice seizure data and the evaluation of seizure suppression algorithms. Each model unit can be described as either an oscillator which can generate action potential spike trains without inputs, or a threshold-based unit. With the change of only one parameter, each unit can either be an oscillator or a threshold-based spiking unit. This would eliminate the need of a new set of equations for each type of unit. Previous analysis has suggested that long kernel duration and i

Activation of the occipital cortex and deactivation of the default mode network during working memory in the early blind.

Although blind people heavily depend on working memory to manage daily life without visual information, it is not clear yet whether their working memory processing involves functional reorganization of the memory-related cortical network. To explore functional reorganization of the cortical network that supports various types of working memory processes in the early blind, we investigated activation differences between 2-back tasks and 0-back tasks using fMRI in 10 congenitally blind subjects and 10 sighted subjects. We used three types of stimulus sequences: words for a verbal task, pitches f

Differentiation of intracardiac tumors and thrombi by echocardiographic tissue characterization: comparison of an artificial neural network and human observers.

The feasibility of classifying ultrasound images of intracardiac tumors and thrombi with a neural network-based algorithm was compared with the performance of experienced echocardiographers. The neural network used statistical descriptors of the apparent echocardiographic texture of the masses, and the blinded echocardiographers were given photographic prints of enlarged regions of interest without clinical data. The network classified 66% of the images correctly and the echocardiographers, 83%. The network and echocardiographers agreed in 88% of the images. Human observers usually base their

Adaptive restriction rules provide functional and safe stimulation pattern for foot drop correction.

We report on our advances in sensory feedback data processing and control system design for functional electrical stimulation (FES) assisted correction of foot drop. We have applied 2 methods of signal purification on the bin integrated electroneurogram (i.e., optimized low pass filtering and wavelet denoising) before training adaptive logic networks (ALN). ALN generated stimulation control pulses, which correspond to the swing phase of the impaired leg when dorsal flexion of the foot is necessary to provide safe ground clearance. However, the obtained control signal contained sporadic stimula

Reproducible Human Neural Circuits Printed with Single-Cell Precision Reveal the Functional Roles of Ephaptic Coupling.

Although in vitro neuronal models are accessible and versatile systems for functional electrophysiological studies, the spontaneous and random formation of neural circuits often compromises the structural control and reproducibility. Here, we introduce a robust method for engineering human neuronal networks in vitro with single-cell precision and reproducibility. Our integrated platform combines direct laser-written microstructure templates and soft lithography-based fabrication of microscaffolds with functional multielectrode array recordings. This system enables high-throughput production of

Neural correlates of central pain sensitization in chronic low back pain: a resting-state fMRI study.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to explore the neural correlates of pain sensitization in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP). While the association between cLBP and pain sensitization has been widely reported, the underlying brain mechanism responsible for this relationship requires further investigation. METHODS: Our study included 56 cLBP patients and 56 healthy controls (HC). Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained, and the voxel-wise amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) was calculated to identify brain alterations in cLBP patients compared to HC g

Identifying the neural basis for rosacea using positron emission tomography-computed tomography cerebral functional imaging analysis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The neural basis of rosacea is not well understood. This study aimed to determine whether cerebral glucose metabolism (CGM) changes on 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans can detect functional network changes in specific brain areas in patients with rosacea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight adults with rosacea and 10 age/sex-matched healthy adults (controls) were enrolled in the study. 18 F-FDG PET/CT brain images for all eight patients and whole-body images for two of the patients were analyzed qualitatively and semi-qu

Functional alterations in cortical processing of speech in glioma-infiltrated cortex.

Recent developments in the biology of malignant gliomas have demonstrated that glioma cells interact with neurons through both paracrine signaling and electrochemical synapses. Glioma-neuron interactions consequently modulate the excitability of local neuronal circuits, and it is unclear the extent to which glioma-infiltrated cortex can meaningfully participate in neural computations. For example, gliomas may result in a local disorganization of activity that impedes the transient synchronization of neural oscillations. Alternatively, glioma-infiltrated cortex may retain the ability to engage

Early Transcriptomic Changes upon Thalidomide Exposure Influence the Later Neuronal Development in Human Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Spheres.

Stress in early life has been linked with the development of late-life neurological disorders. Early developmental age is potentially sensitive to several environmental chemicals such as alcohol, drugs, food contaminants, or air pollutants. The recent advances using three-dimensional neural sphere cultures derived from pluripotent stem cells have provided insights into the etiology of neurological diseases and new therapeutic strategies for assessing chemical safety. In this study, we investigated the neurodevelopmental effects of exposure to thalidomide (TMD); 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl eth

Neural Mechanisms of Paroxysmal Kinesigenic Dyskinesia: Insights from Neuroimaging.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is a rare movement disorder of the nervous system, and little is known about its pathogenesis. Currently, the diagnosis of PKD is primarily based on clinical manifestations, with little objective evidence. Neuroimaging has been used to explore the pathological changes in cerebral structure and function associated with PKD. The current review highlights recent advances in neuroimaging to provide a better understanding of the neural mechanisms and early diagnosis of this disorder. Several studies utilizing single-photon emission computed tomography (CT), p

Altered brain connectivity in 3-to 7-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often described as a disorder of aberrant neural connectivity and/or aberrant hemispheric lateralization. Although it is important to study the pathophysiology of the developing ASD cortex, the physiological connectivity of the brain in young children with ASD under conscious conditions has not yet been described. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive brain imaging technique that is practical for use in young children. MEG produces a reference-free signal and is, therefore, an ideal tool for computing the coherence between two distant cortical rhythms.

A speckle-tracking strain-based artificial neural network model to differentiate cardiomyopathy type.

Objectives. In heart failure, invasive angiography is often employed to differentiate ischaemic from non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy. We aim to examine the predictive value of echocardiographic strain features alone and in combination with other features to differentiate ischaemic from non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy, using artificial neural network (ANN) and logistic regression modelling. Design. We retrospectively identified 204 consecutive patients with an ejection fraction <50% and a diagnostic angiogram. Patients were categorized as either ischaemic (n = 146) or non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (n

Curved planar reformatting and convolutional neural network-based segmentation of the small bowel for visualization and quantitative assessment of pediatric Crohn's disease from MRI.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced MRI of the small bowel is an effective imaging sequence for the detection and characterization of disease burden in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). However, visualization and quantification of disease burden requires scrolling back and forth through 3D images to follow the anatomy of the bowel, and it can be difficult to fully appreciate the extent of disease. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a method that offers better visualization and quantitative assessment of CD from MRI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Twenty-three pediatric patients with CD. Tri-Stream Disentangled Network with Adaptive Dual-Space Fusion for Electroencephalography-Based Image Reconstruction on THINGS-EEG2.

Reconstructing visual stimuli from non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) requires mapping short, noisy neural responses to meaningful visual representations despite limited spatial sampling. Existing EEG-to-image approaches employ diverse neural representations and generative strategies, necessitating reproducible workflows that disentangle structural and semantic contributions. This protocol presents the Tri-stream Disentangled Network (TDE-Net), a computational framework for EEG-based image reconstruction. The protocol uses preprocessed THINGS-EEG2 recordings and organizes EEG informatio

Cortex-Wide Substrates for Body Schema and Action Awareness.

The concept of the body schema originated from studies of patients with cortical lesions who were unable to localize their body parts in space or perceive passive movements (Head & Holmes, 1911). Current consensus defines the body schema as the brain's internal representation of the body configuration in space used for both embodied perception and voluntary action (de Vignemont, 2010; Berlucchi & Aglioti, 2010; Vallar et al., 2025). Despite extensive research, how the cortex efficiently encodes the vast repertoire of body postures to support natural behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we
