Confirmation of a Useful Dark-Room Resting-State Procedure: Periodic and Aperiodic MEG Activity in Children.

In a previous paper, we showed in children 6-12 years old that a resting-state (RS) eyes-open dark room (DR) task provides RS parietal-occipital alpha measures similar to those obtained using the standard RS eyes-closed (EC) exam. Results provided initial evidence that the RS DR procedure is feasible and useful with populations often excluded from electrophysiology RS studies, such as participants who cannot remain awake with their eyes closed or cannot remain still for an extended period. The present study extended the DR and EC comparisons to a much larger sample of children spanning a wider

Tramadol-Related Deaths Over a 10-Year Period-An Autopsy Study From Western Denmark.

Due to recently emerging concerns about the nonmedical use of tramadol in Denmark, we hypothesized increasing tramadol detections in medico-legal autopsy cases, with more nonprescribed use and fatal poisonings over time, particularly among young individuals. In 2013-2024, we detected tramadol in 205 decedents. Fourteen (7%) had age ≤ 25 years. Apparently, 82 (40%) had no prescription. Tramadol poisoning caused death in 60 (29%), including 4 (2%) with age ≤ 25. There were 12 accidental poisonings with tramadol alone (age (median [interquartile range]): 52 [46-55] years, tramadol concentration:

Opposing sensitive period effects of early and late childhood maltreatment on corticolimbic responses in fear conditioning.

The neural mechanisms underlying fear learning are critical for survival. Childhood maltreatment increases the risk of psychopathology by disrupting these processes, yet it remains unclear whether such effects reflect the cumulative burden of maltreatment types or arise from timing-specific exposures during sensitive developmental periods. In this study, 213 young adults (18-28 years) completed the Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposure (MACE), which retrospectively assesses the severity and timing of ten maltreatment types across childhood. During fMRI, participants underwent a Pavlovi

Tunable all-optical comb generation via harmonic locking of cascaded period-one dynamics.

This work examines frequency comb generation in a cascaded arrangement of optically injected semiconductor lasers operating within the P1 dynamic regime. The system comprises two injection stages, where the first-stage laser is driven by a continuous-wave master laser, and its output is used to inject a second slave laser. By varying the injection strength and frequency detuning at each stage, frequency-locked comb states emerge, characterized by rational winding numbers that follow a Farey tree structure. These combs result from nonlinear interactions between the P1 oscillation frequencies of

Stability and change in social network size over four decades: an age-period-cohort analysis.

PURPOSE: Interest in social networks has increased in recent decades amid concerns around social isolation and loneliness, despite increased access to social connections via electronics. Prior studies identified predictors and outcomes linked to network size, but few studies have examined age, period, and cohort effects simultaneously. METHODS: Using four decades of data, we assessed age, period, and cohort effects, as well as sociodemographic and personality factors, on family and friend network size. In 1981, 3,481 participants (Mage = 47.8 years; 62% White; 38% female) were sampled from Ea

Effects of the Pattern of Light and a Dark Recovery Period on Photosynthesis and Growth in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.

Optimizing the application of light is a central challenge in the cultivation of cyanobacteria because light is needed for growth, but excessive light can cause cellular damage. Here, we demonstrate that the temporal pattern of the light intensity, rather than the time-integrated daily total, determines photosynthetic stability and growth in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Cells were cultivated in a turbidostatic flat-panel photobioreactor using three different light patterns, however, with identical time-integrated daily total (3.19 × 107 µmol photons m-2 day-1): a simulated solar light/dark (L/D

Hierarchical frequency-locking organization and quint points in a periodically driven FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model.

We uncover the global organization of resonance structures in a periodically driven FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model. High-resolution Lyapunov diagrams with local-maxima (LM) classification expose a hierarchical network of Arnold tongues in parameter space. Frequency-locking regions emerge from quasiperiodic dynamics and extend into chaotic domains, following a period-adding organization consistent with Farey-tree ordering. Successive magnifications reveal multiscale embeddings of stable periodic structures containing quint points, where five periodic domains coalesce and satisfy local LM-adding r

Highly stable active core microbiomes in Greenland cryoconite holes during the bare ice period.

Cryoconite holes host diverse microbiomes on glaciers and ice sheets and are important habitats for supraglacial biogeochemical cycling. Despite reports of relative stability of cryoconite hole community composition on the Greenland Ice Sheet, it is not known how microbial function in cryoconite holes evolves under varying environmental conditions. Here, we address this knowledge gap by quantifying the active community members in five cryoconite holes on the Greenland Ice Sheet over a 3-week period during the 2022 melt season using TotalRNA. Active microbiomes were enriched in cyanobacterial s

Effectiveness of a Swiss Ball Training Program on Quality of Life Among Women During the Climacteric Period.

Background The climacteric period is a transitional stage in a woman's life characterized by hormonal, physical, psychological, and functional measures that could negatively impact quality of life. Common symptoms include vasomotor disturbances, reduced muscle strength, decreased flexibility, impaired mobility, pelvic floor dysfunction, and psychological distress. Non-pharmacological interventions, particularly exercise-based programmes, have been progressively suggested for managing climacteric symptoms. Swiss ball training is a form of instability-based exercise that enhances core muscle act

Infection screening at listing and vaccination management through the waiting period in lung transplant candidates in Japan.

Infectious complications remain a major contributor to morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation. In Japan, prolonged waiting periods are a major challenge for lung transplant candidates, during which infection-related risk evolves with new exposures, exacerbations, and hospitalizations. This review provides a practice-oriented approach to infection screening at listing and vaccination management throughout the waiting period for lung transplantation in Japan. Baseline screening at listing is organized into universal serologies, respiratory microbiology (bacteria, moulds, and nontuber

Environmental surveillance of enteric viruses in mussels reveals reduced contamination during the pandemic restriction period.

The present study investigated the occurrence of enteric viruses in mussels and evaluated differences in viral contamination between the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 periods. Mussel samples (n = 434) were collected from Slovenian production areas between November 2020 and October 2024, with a one-year interruption from May 2022 to May 2023 and were tested for viral RNA using RT-qPCR. A marked difference in viral detection was observed between the two study periods. Enteric viral RNA was detected in 22.4% of samples collected during the COVID-19 period, compared with 62.2% in the post-COVID-19 pe

Transient changes in body weight and behavior during the placentation period in non-human primates and rodents.

During early pregnancy, many women experience physical changes, including nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), which negatively impact their quality of life. However, the absence of model animals has limited our understanding of such pregnancy-associated physiological changes. Here, we examined pregnancy-associated metabolic and behavioral changes in common marmosets and mice. Marmosets exhibited a transient weight decrease during the period of placental development in approximately 22% of pregnancies. Some marmosets repeatedly showed transient weight loss across multiple pregnancies, sugge

Periodic acid-promoted methylenation of imidazoheteroarenes: a green approach using ethylene glycol as a C1 source.

Herein, we describe an environmentally sustainable methodology for the methylenation of C3(sp2) imidazoheteroarenes, employing formaldehyde (C1) generated in situ via oxidative cleavage of ethylene glycol-a renewable feedstock. The protocol utilizes water as a non-toxic solvent and stoichiometric reagents, aligning with green chemistry principles by ensuring high atomic economy and minimal waste. Optimized conditions enable regioselective bis-heterocycle formation with yields up to 97%. The reaction proceeds through a Malaprade oxidation-mediated ionic pathway mediated by 0.5 molar equiv. of p

The impact of and changes in the oxidative status in the post-injury period following nonpenetrating traumatic brain injuries.

ObjectiveIn the pathogenesis of the post-injury period following nonpenetrating traumatic brain injuries (TBIs; post-TBIs), pathological metabolic changes in the oxidative status are important, as a complete understanding of their interactions can explain the concept of how oxidative metabolic-related differences develop, thereby supporting effective treatment.MethodsThis case-control study included 63 patients (mean age ± SD, 36.19 ± 11.4 years) in the post-TBI group and 32 healthy controls. Participants were tested for creatine kinase, adenosine triphosphate, and adenosine diphosphate levels
