A review of 545 patients with clinically diagnosed rectal carcinoma was conducted to determine the diagnostic usefulness of pre-operative barium enema and the frequency with which it was employed. Only 118 patients underwent pre-operative barium enema (21.7%). This successfully outlined the whole colon in 107 (90%). Synchronous carcinomas were detected in 9.3% of patients who underwent complete barium enema, compared to 4.3% of those who underwent laparotomy alone (P less than 0.05). In this article, we report two new cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in children and review the literature over the past twenty years. This series of 70 cases demonstrates that the clinical pictures observed in children are similar to those of adults. Rectal prolapse or extrusion of polyps can be the clue to the diagnosis at an early age, even in the absence of pigmentation, which can appear later. OBJECTIVE: We describe the radiographic and pathologic findings of small flat umbilicated tumors of the colon detected on double-contrast barium enema examinations performed in a Western population.
CONCLUSION: Unlike those reported by Japanese authors, the small flat umbilicated tumors of the colon in our patients were usually hyperplastic polyps, previously called "inverted hyperplastic polyps." Five children presenting with chronic and intermittent rectal bleeding were diagnosed as having colorectal polyps by fibreoptic colonoscopy performed under sedation. Three of the children had had barium-enema films reported on as normal. Eight polyps were seen, of which six were proximal to the sigmoid colon. All were removed endoscopically (one by proctoscopy, one by snare-intussusception) without complication. Colonoscopic polypectomy is a safe and efficient procedure in children, and colonoscopy may be regarded as first-line management in those with rectal bleeding.

We report a 65-year-old patient with a gastric polyp of 2.5 cm in diameter located at the cardia on upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. Pathological examination of the excised polyp showed intramucosal carcinoma. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) reported the lesion as early gastric carcinoma with probable submucosal involvement. On serial sections of the gastrectomy material, the lesion was an intramucosal carcinoma and surprisingly there was a leiomyoma located adjacently.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare inherited autosomal dominant disease characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentation and multiple polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. We report on an 18-year-old Chinese male who complained with pigmentation on face and extremities for over 10 years. Colonoscopy revealed more than ten polyps from transverse colon to rectum. The family survey included 15 family members from three generations, and 6 PJSs (4 males and 2 females) were found. This case is reported because of its rarity of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and the survey of family history.

This review describes the epidemiology and various treatments in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP). Evidence for short-term use of systemic corticosteroids has been shown to be favorable in CRSwNP, but still limited in CRSsNP. Topical corticosteroids improve symptom scores in both CRS subgroups. The role of microbes in CRS is still controversial. Culture-directed antibiotics are recommended for CRSsNP with exacerbation. A 61-year-old woman with diarrhoea had multiple filling defects on a barium enema and was assumed to have multiple colonic polyps. However, colonoscopy showed colonic varices and relatively few true polyps. She bled significantly after polypectomy of a tubular adenoma. There was no evidence to support a diagnosis of portal hypertension or liver disease. A case report of her father's idiopathic colonic varices has previously been reported in this journal in 1985, and we update his subsequent progress and discuss other reports of this rare condition.

A case of herniation of the antral membrane through a recent extraction site is presented. The lesion was initially diagnosed as a tumor by the referring dentist. Oroantral fistulas are not an uncommon finding after dental extractions. It is rare, however, to see herniation of the antral membrane with large polyps extending through the fistula into the oral cavity. A search of the literature revealed only two other such cases. Surgical removal of the polyps and closure of the oroantral fistula by means of a buccal sliding flap technique is discussed.

Gardner's syndrome consists of multiple polyposis of the large intestine and soft and hard tissue tumors. The syndrome should be considered in case of supernumerary teeth, odontomas, osteoma and soft tissue tumors. These findings often precede colonic involvement. Careful attention should be directed towards the family history. The importance of this syndrome lies in the great tendency of the polyps to become malignant. Dentist and oral surgeon play an important role in the early detection of this syndrome and thus prevention of malignant degeneration of the intestinal polyps.

Use of flexible endoscopes affords biopsy sampling of polypoid lesions of the colon, especially within the rectum and sigmoid colon by flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscopes. Histologic examination of colonic biopsies usually allows division of polyps into neoplastic and non-neoplastic categories. There are significant limitations to such biopsies, however, due to sampling error and inability to reach deep submucosal cores of polyps where malignant invasion may occur. A 30-year-old woman developed proptosis secondary to a left ethmoidal compact osteoma. At age 29 years, a mandibular eburnated (ivory) osteoma was excised. At age 25 years, multiple adenomatous polyps of the colon were resected. Her father, age 61 years, had multiple intestinal polyps and bilateral mandibular osteoma. A 24-year-old sister had an osteoma of the forehead. Gardner's syndrome is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder characterized by intestinal polyposis, various skin and soft tissue tumors, and osteomas of the bony skeleton. Orbital osteomas occur rarely.

We investigated the radiographs of 125 patients with respect to variations of intestines (diverticula, polyps, carcinomas) and simultaneous anomalies in vertebral column (fissure of vertebral arches, asymmetric growth of vertebral arches, deterioration of ribs, fusing of vertebrae). There is a significant correlation between diverticula of colon and anomalies in vertebral column, whereas we found no correlation between other variations of intestines (polyps, carcinomas) and anomalies in vertebral columns. INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal haemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumours. In adults, the cavernous form is more common. Due to their appearance, they are frequently confused with vocal fold polyps or, less commonly, with malignant lesions.

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic leiomyosarcomas make up around 8.6% of all leiomyosarcomas. They behave aggressively and often have poor prognoses. They can affect the gastrointestinal tract and retroperitoneum. To date, pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma involving the mesocolon have been reported in nine patients.
