Associations of a Composite Stress Measurement Tool With Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Outcomes: Findings From the Dallas Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Most data linking chronic stress with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and outcomes have focused on single-domain stress measurements. We evaluated the association between a novel composite measure of chronic perceived stress and CVD risk factors and outcomes in a diverse population. METHODS AND RESULTS: Individual chronic stress subcomponents (generalized stress, psychosocial, financial, and neighborhood stress) were standardized and integrated to create a novel composite stress score (CSS). Participants from the DHS (Dallas Heart Study) phase 2 (2007-2009) visit without

The relationship between vitamin D levels and Alzheimer's disease risk: insights from a centenarian study of Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: While vitamin D₃ (VD₃) has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevention, limited evidence exists among centenarians-particularly women-who exhibit unique cognitive aging trajectories. This study aimed to examine the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and AD risk in Chinese female centenarians. METHODS: We included 514 female participants aged ≥100 years from the China Healthy Longevity Multicenter Study (CHLMS). AD was diagnosed using education-adjusted MMSE thresholds and clinical exclusion of non-AD dementias. Serum 25(OH)D and biochemical m

Cardiac MRI study of adverse events in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors: a prospective cohort study of cardiac adverse events.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) revolutionized cancer therapy, yet require management of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Fulminant myocarditis is a rare irAE, but lower-severity cardiac events are being reported more frequently, leading to an unmet need for irAE prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment, especially for long-life-expectancy patients. We recruited 57 patients, stratified according to therapy regime (monotherapy (30%) or combination (33%) cohort) or history of cardiac disease or presence of at least two cardiovascular risk factors other than prior or active smoking (c

A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of global esophageal cancer and gastroesophageal reflux disease burden: temporal trends, regional disparities, and epidemiologic associations.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer (EC) demonstrates poor prognosis and regional disparities. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is an established risk factor for adenocarcinoma, though its link to squamous cell carcinoma remains debated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 204 countries and territories (1990-2021) using the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study. Incidence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for EC and GERD were assessed by age, sex, and region. Time-series modeling, hierarchical clustering, and time-lagged analysis were employed to explore epidemiological trends

Mental health matters? An examination of how anxiety and depression influence the alcohol-e-cigarette use relationship.

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette use has grown in popularity and is independently associated with alcohol use and mental health (anxiety/depression), but the interactions between alcohol and anxiety/depression with e-cigarette use have not been examined. We examined whether anxiety/depression would influence the association of both alcohol use frequency and heavy episodic drinking (HED) with e-cigarette use frequency, hypothesizing that alcohol use would be more strongly related to e-cigarette use among those with current anxiety/depression. METHODS: N = 11,006 adults (55 % female; 71 % non-Hispanic W
