Impacts of arsenic exposure through drinking water on pigment disorders: A meta-analysis and a Bayesian benchmark concentration analysis.

BACKGROUND: Skin lesions are an early and distinct symptom of waterborne arsenic poisoning, while pigment disorder is the first symptom of skin lesions. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the association between pigment disorders and arsenic concentration in drinking water can be used as a basis for the development of arsenic drinking water standards. However, it remains unclear whether arsenic primarily causes depigmentation or hyperpigmentation, and what dose of arsenic is safe with respect to skin symptoms. METHODS: A meta-analysis was performed using Stata 17.0 software. PubMed, Embase, W

Selenite protects human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from CdCl2 cytotoxicity.

The potential role of selenium (Se) in modulating cadmium (Cd) cytotoxicity in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was investigated by assessing pro- and anti-inflammatory as well as redox biomarkers. We also examined the potential synergistic effects of SARS-CoV-2 N-protein with Cd in PBMCs. PBMCs were isolated from adults and treated for 48 h with sodium selenite (Na₂SeO₃; 0.04, 0.4, and 4 µM) and cadmium chloride (CdCl₂; 0.1 and 1 µM), in the presence or absence of SARS-CoV-2 N-protein. We measured total Se and Cd levels, cell viability, cytotoxicity, intracellular reactive oxy

Calcium intake and risk of prostate cancer: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: The association between high calcium intake and prostate cancer (PCa) risk is only weak, and the dose-response relationship between the two remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between calcium intake and PCa risk. METHODS: The databases were searched up to September 2024. Random-effects models were employed to pool effect sizes (ESs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for the highest versus lowest intakes of total, dietary, supplemental, dairy and non-dairy calcium. Linear and non-linear dose-re

Impact of lead (Pb)-induced neurotoxicity on protein synthesis and cellular stress responses in LUHMES cells.

Exposure to lead (Pb) poses significant risks to human brain development. This study investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying Pb acetate-induced neurotoxicity in LUHMES cells, which represent a human fetal-derived dopaminergic neuronal precursor model particularly suited for studies of neurotoxicity and Parkinson's disease. Morphological analyses revealed that Pb acetate exposure at concentrations exceeding 10 µM induced cytotoxicity and disrupted neurite outgrowth. Distinct gene expression changes associated with Pb exposure were determined through RNA-sequencing. Principal component

Genotoxic and cytotoxic effect of vanadium inhalation and oral administration of Hintonia latiflora methanolic extract in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental air pollution constitutes a significant problem for large cities, primarily due to anthropogenic activities such as burning fossil fuels, which have led to an escalation that release suspended particulate matter (PM);vanadium, a metal adhered to PM, leading to their entry into the bloodstream and subsequently V distribution to various organs. Research has demonstrated that exposure to vanadium (V) can induce single-strand breaks and the presence of micronuclei in cells. In addition to this, the use of herbal remedies has seen a marked increase on a global scale in r

Ferroptosis-targeting compounds modulate cancer cell cytotoxicity and migration: Insights from in vitro and in silico analyses.

OBJECTIVE: Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent, non-apoptotic form of metabolic cell death driven by lipid peroxidation. While Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is the canonical ferroptosis suppressor, recent evidence highlights additional selenoproteins, including Thioredoxin Reductase 1 (TXNRD1) and Peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6), as critical modulators of ferroptotic sensitivity. We compared three mechanistically distinct ferroptosis inducers, RSL3 (a covalent GPX4 inhibitor), auranofin (a TXNRD1 inhibitor), and artesunate (ART; a pro-oxidant derivative of artemisinin), in MDA-MB231, A549 and HepG2 cel

The safety assessment of cinnabar: Effects of co-administration with selenium on renal toxicity in mice.

BACKGROUND: Cinnabar is a mercury-containing mineral traditionally used in Chinese medicine and can induce kidney injury via mercury toxicity. Given that cinnabar contains elements such as selenium, it is reasonable to hypothesize that its multi-element composition may regulate nephrotoxicity through intermetallic interactions. To validate this hypothesis and clarify the distinct renal toxicity between cinnabar and single mercury compounds, we compared the nephrotoxic effects of cinnabar, Zhu-Sha-An-Shen-Wan (ZSASW), mercuric sulfide (HgS), and mercuric nitrate (Hg(NO₃)₂). By co-administration

Ageing alters zinc, magnesium, and interleukin-8 levels in human dermal fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: Ageing is linked to a decline in cellular functions, weakening the skin's defence mechanisms. At advanced ages, deficiencies in micronutrients like zinc and magnesium are common. Zinc deficiency from inadequate intake or absorption can lead to skin issues such as delayed wound healing and eczema. Dysregulated zinc homeostasis can increase the risk of dermatitis and psoriasis. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between zinc and magnesium levels and skin ageing and inflammation in human dermal fibroblasts from young and old donors. METHODS: Primary dermal fibroblasts
