Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a vital reactive carbonyl compound, which plays an important role in the photochemical process and atmospheric oxidation capacity. However, the current studies on the quantification of HCHO impacts on atmospheric photochemistry in southeast coastal areas of China with an obvious upward trend of ozone remain scarce and unclear, thus limiting the full understanding of formation mechanism and control strategy of photochemical pollution. Here, systematic field campaigns were conducted at a typical coastal urban site with good air quality to reveal HCHO mechanism and effects

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollutants can be hazardous to human health, especially for vulnerable children. The impact of ambient air pollutant exposure before and during intensive care unit (ICU) stays on the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in critically ill children has not been established. We aimed to determine the correlations between short-term exposures to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and VAP in pediatric cardiac surgery patients in the ICU, and explore the effect of delayed exposure.
METHODS: The medical record of 1755 child patients requiring artificial v

A pilot study to test methods of estimating personal exposures to toxic substances and corresponding body burdens was carried out between July and December 1980. Individual exposures to about a dozen volatile organic compounds in air and drinking water were measured for nine volunteers in Bayonne and Elizabeth, New Jersey, and for three volunteers in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina during three 3-day visits over the 6-month period. Breath samples were also collected from all subjects on each visit. Composite food samples were collected in each locality. Sampling and analytical methods f

Air plays a vital role in human life, and poor air quality can lead to respiratory infections. Given the significant impact of air quality on people's health, monitoring and assessing air quality is crucial. With advancements in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), we now have extensive tools to measure the Air Quality Index (AQI). Air quality is influenced by various pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), which are prevalent in highly polluted areas and contribute to a wide range of illnesses. Asbestos, as with other pollutants in the air, has adverse effects on the health of human beings and animals. Today, the relationship between presence of asbestos fibers in the air breathed by humans and developing serious diseases such as lung cancer (asbestosis) and mesothelioma has been proven. This study was designed and conducted within the time period of August 2017 and June 2018 to determine the concentration of asbestos fiber in the ambient air of Shahryar City and to evaluate their health effects for the general population of the city. For this purpose, samples were taken from four po

Evaluating the extent to which air quality regulations improve public health--sometimes referred to as accountability--is part of an emerging effort to assess the effectiveness of environmental regulatory policies. Air quality has improved substantially in the United States and Western Europe in recent decades, with far less visible pollution and decreasing concentrations of several major pollutants. In large part, these gains were achieved through increasingly stringent air quality regulations. The costs associated with compliance and, importantly, the need to ensure that the regulations are

Recent years have seen a global increase in asthma prevalence. This has coincided with modifications to the home environment resulting in changes to the indoor air quality. This article considers the links between indoor pollution and asthma. Exposure to a range of substances is examined. Airborne allergens such as those from house dust mites may be important. Pollution from particulate materials associated with combustion and smoking is discussed, as is the role of chemical vapors and gases including nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds. The efficacy of various env

With the development of industries, air pollution in north-central Henan is becoming increasingly severe. The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) provides nitrogen dioxide (NO2) column densities with high spatial resolution. Based on TROPOMI, in this study, the nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions in north-central Henan are derived and the emission hotspots are identified with the flux divergence method (FDM) from May to September 2021. The results indicate that Zhengzhou has the highest NOx emissions in north-central Henan. The most prominent hotspots are in Guancheng Huizu District (Zhen

Peroxyacetilnitrates (PAN) is the most characteristic photoxidant of a range of secondary pollutants formed by the photochemical reaction of hydrocarbons with nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere: it is phytotoxic and shows an increasing role in human health effects due to ambient air exposure, especially in presence of high ozone concentrations. Because of the similarity of the conditions required for their photochemical production PAN is observed in conjunction with elevated ozone concentrations. PAN has very low natural background concentrations so it is the very specific indicator of anthropo

This study investigates the impact of environmental, social, and economic factors on air pollution and respiratory disease mortality in the G7 countries by autoregressive distributed lag and vector autoregressive models. The analyzed key variables include non-renewable energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, gross domestic product, urbanization, life expectancy, and public health expenditure. This study tested three hypotheses: (i) non-renewable energy use is associated with higher mortality from respiratory diseases, (ii) economic and demographic factors influence respiratory mortality

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from landfills are significant contributors to air pollution, attracting considerable attention. In this study, we investigated VOCs emission from a landfill located in a dry, cold region of Northwest China, where residual sludge from a sewage plant was utilized as a cover material for waste. A total of 43 VOCs were detected, with concentrations ranging from 0.58 to 412.15 mg/m3 for each single VOC, predominantly comprising aromatic and oxygenated compounds. Elevated VOCs concentration was observed in both the covered area and work area, with aromatic

Understanding how individual pollution sources contribute to ambient sulfate pollution is critical for assessing past and future air quality regulations. Since attribution to specific sources is typically not encoded in spatial air pollution data, we develop a mechanistic model which we use to estimate, with uncertainty, the contribution of ambient sulfate concentrations attributable specifically to sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from individual coal-fired power plants in the central United States. We propose a multivariate Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process approximation to the dynamics of the u

BACKGROUND: Previous human exposure studies of traffic-related air pollutants have demonstrated adverse health effects in human populations by comparing areas of high and low traffic, but few studies have utilized microenvironmental monitoring of pollutants at multiple traffic locations while looking at a vast array of health endpoints in the same population. We evaluated inflammatory markers, heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure, exhaled nitric oxide, and lung function in healthy participants after exposures to varying mixtures of traffic pollutants.

An association between air pollution and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality has been reported, but underlying mechanisms are unknown. The authors examined short-term associations between ambient pollutants (particulate matter less than 10 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10), ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide) and cardiac autonomic control using data from the fourth cohort examination (1996-1998) of the population-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. For each participant, the authors calculated PM10 and gaseous pollutant exposures as 24-hou

An accurate estimation of population exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5) is crucial to hazard assessment and epidemiology. This study integrated annual data from 1146 in-home air monitors, air quality monitoring network, public applications, and traffic smart cards to determine the pattern of PM2.5 concentrations and activities in different microenvironments (including outdoors, indoors, subways, buses, and cars). By combining massive amounts of signaling data from cell phones, this study applied a spatio-temporally weighted model to improve the estimati
