Prognostic Significance of NLR and PLR in COVID-19: A Multi-Cohort Validation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have highlighted the prognostic value of easily accessible inflammatory markers, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) for predicting severe outcomes in patients affected by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our study validates NLR and PLR cut-off values from a prior cohort at IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo (OSM) of Pavia, Italy, across two new cohorts from different hospitals. This aims to enhance the generalizability of these prognostic indicators. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, conducted at Milan's Ospedale

[Hypothetical Alcohol Consumption Interventions and Hepatic Steatosis: A Longitudinal Study in a Large Cohort].

OBJECTIVE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-associated fatty liver disease (ALD) are the most common chronic liver diseases. Hepatic steatosis is an early histological subtype of both NAFLD and ALD. Excessive alcohol consumption is widely known to lead to hepatic steatosis and subsequent liver damage. However, reported findings concerning the association between moderate alcohol consumption and hepatic steatosis remain inconsistent. Notably, alcohol consumption as a modifiable lifestyle behavior is likely to change over time, but most previous studies covered alcohol intak

Early mobilization after transcatheter aortic valve implantation: observational cohort study.

AIMS: Early mobilization is associated with improved outcomes in hospitalized older patients. We sought to determine the effect of a nurse-led protocol on mobilization 4 h after transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) across different units of care. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a prospective observational cohort single-centre study of consecutive patients. We implemented a standardized protocol for safe early recovery and progressive mobilization in the critical care and cardiac telemetry units. We measured the time to first mobilization and conducted descriptive stat

Serum uric acid levels and health outcomes in CKD: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hyperuricemia is prevalent in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) concentrations have been considered an independent risk factor for the onset of CKD. However, the relationship between SUA concentrations and long-term health outcomes among patients with CKD remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study with nationally representative sample to investigate the relationship between SUA concentrations and mortality risk including all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality, among patients with CKD. The weig

Dementia risk factors in former contact sports participants: prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The elevated dementia incidence in retired contact sport participants might be explained by a higher prevalence of established risk factors for the disease relative to the general population. METHODS: In this cohort study, former elite participants active between 1920 and 1965 in soccer (N=303), boxing (N=281), and wrestling (N=318) were recruited using sports yearbooks and records of sports associations. Men in a population control group were identified using records from a compulsory medical examination (N=1712). All study members were linked to hospital registers (1970-2015) an

European Autism GEnomics Registry (EAGER): protocol for a multicentre cohort study and registry.

INTRODUCTION: Autism is a common neurodevelopmental condition with a complex genetic aetiology that includes contributions from monogenic and polygenic factors. Many autistic people have unmet healthcare needs that could be served by genomics-informed research and clinical trials. The primary aim of the European Autism GEnomics Registry (EAGER) is to establish a registry of participants with a diagnosis of autism or an associated rare genetic condition who have undergone whole-genome sequencing. The registry can facilitate recruitment for future clinical trials and research studies, based on g
