Oral care and sensory sensitivities in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at high risk for oral disease. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of sensory processing problems to challenges in receiving oral care for children with ASD. A questionnaire was sent to the parents of 206 children with disabilities to test the hypotheses that children with ASD, relative to children with other disabilities, experience greater difficulty with home-based and professional oral care, and that these difficulties may relate in part to sensory processing problems. The results partially supported these hypotheses. Comp

Optimising the dose of oral midazolam sedation for dental procedures in children: a prospective, randomised, and controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Midazolam sedation poses a significant dilemma in paediatric dentistry, which is to find out the optimal dosing with minimal undesirable adverse events. In this study, we aimed to compare the effect of three doses of oral midazolam (0.5, 0.75, and 1 mg/kg) on the sedative state and cooperative behaviour of children during dental treatment. We further compared completion rates, parent satisfaction, and all adverse events. DESIGN: Ninety children aged 3-10 years were randomised to three equal groups. Groups A, B, and C received 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mg/kg of oral midazolam, respectively.

Treatment of nicotine addiction.

The best available data show smoking to be by far the most important cause of disease and death in our society, contributing to an average of 1000 deaths every day. Although a large majority of current smokers express a desire to quit, the majority of "self-help" attempts to quit are not successful. Further, most smokers indicate never having received advice on cessation from healthcare providers. The combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions, even on a minimal level, have been shown to be effective in cessation. Such strategies are certainly highly cost-effective, given the

Evidence-based dentistry and the concept of harm.

Evidence-based medicine requires the integration of best research evidence with the clinician's expertise and the patient's unique values and circumstances. One of the most important issues in deciding what course of treatment to select is balancing the potential risks and benefits of treatment. A framework for evidence-based decision-making includes formulating the clinical question and then retrieving, appraising, and considering the applicability of the evidence to the patient. It is the duty of all health care providers to reduce patient risk by selecting appropriate therapies and informin

The association between parental oral health literacy, socio-demographic characteristic, patient factors and caries status of paediateric cancer patient: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric cancer patients (PCPs) are reported to experience poorer dental health compared to their healthy peers. Contributing factors include low parental oral health literacy (OHL), suboptimal oral health behaviours among PCPs, and various clinical factors. However, there is limited data on the caries status of PCPs in Malaysia, and the relationship between caries status and parental OHL remains unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate PCPs' caries status, assess parental OHL, and identify other factors influencing caries status in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional st

Continuous use of direct oral anticoagulants during and after simple and surgical tooth extractions: a prospective clinical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: No consistent approach to the management of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) during and after oral surgery has been established. Thus, DOACs may be unnecessarily discontinued, raising the potential risk of life-threatening thromboembolism. To address the inconsistency in this approach, our study assessed the risk of bleeding and other complications in patients who continue to use DOACs during and after simple and surgical tooth extractions. METHODS: Between May 2016 and December 2023, this prospective study recruited patients aged 18 years or older who were receiving a DOAC or w
