Body mass index and the risk of ulnar nerve entrapment in individuals without diabetes-a longitudinal cohort study from Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE) is a common disorder with many associated risk factors. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an established risk factor, but less is known about metabolic risk factors in individuals without diabetes. Our study aimed to explore the association of body mass index (BMI) with UNE during long-term follow-up. METHOD: The population-based cohort study Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (MDCS) and the Swedish Patient Register (NPR) were cross-linked. Between 1991 and 1996, 30,446 subjects were recruited to MDCS and were followed to a diagnosis of UNE, emigration, death, or e

The impact of traditional cardiovascular risk factor control on 7-year follow-up atherosclerosis progression in systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVES: The 2022 EULAR recommendations for cardiovascular risk management in patients with rheumatic disorders, including SLE, call for rigorous management of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF). The impact of CVRF target attainment on atherosclerotic plaque progression hasn't been previously evaluated in prospective ultrasound studies. METHODS: A total of 115 patients with SLE and 1:1 age and sex-matched healthy controls who had a baseline carotid and femoral ultrasound examination in our cardiovascular research unit were invited for a 7-year follow-up assessment of new plaque development

Perturbation of maternal gut microbiota in mice during a critical perinatal window influences early neurobehavioral outcomes in offspring.

The gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a key environmental factor that shapes host development and physiology, including neural circuits formation and function. Concurrently, there has been growing concern that early-life antibiotic exposure may alter brain developmental trajectories, increasing the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we assessed whether perturbation of the maternal gut microbiota in mice during a narrow critical perinatal window (last week of pregnancy and first three postnatal days), induced by exposure to a commonly

Urinary microbiome and urological cancers: a mini review.

INTRODUCTION: The urinary microbiome (UMB) includes living bacteria, their genomes, and their products from interactions with the host environment. A "core" UMB could potentially exist, with variations between age and sex groups. Changes in UMB composition have been associated with benign urological disorders, but also with urologic cancers. Mechanisms through which UMB can trigger and maintain cancer can be local inflammation and interaction with immune system. AIM OF THE STUDY: To describe the association between UMB and development of urologic cancers. METHODS: A non-systematic literature

Endocannabinoids and related lipids linked to social exclusion in individuals with chronic non-medical prescription opioid use.

Opioid-related overdose deaths are still on the rise in North America, emphasizing the need to better understand the underlying neurobiological mechanisms regarding the development of opioid use disorder (OUD). Recent evidence from preclinical and clinical studies indicate that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) may play a crucial role in stress and reward, both involved in the development and maintenance of substance use disorders. Animal models demonstrate a specific crosstalk between the ECS and the endogenous opioid system. However, translational studies in humans are scarce. Here, we invest

"Females Are Not Just 'Protected' Males": Sex-Specific Vulnerabilities in Placenta and Brain after Prenatal Immune Disruption.

Current perceptions of genetic and environmental vulnerabilities in the developing fetus are biased toward male outcomes. An argument is made that males are more vulnerable to gestational complications and neurodevelopmental disorders, the implication being that an understanding of disrupted development in males is sufficient to understand causal mechanisms that are assumed to be similar but attenuated in females. Here we examine this assumption in the context of immune-driven alterations in fetal brain development and related outcomes in female and male mice. Pregnant C57BL/6 mice were treate

Postnatal and Juvenile Fluoxetine Treatment Evokes Sex-Specific, Opposing Effects on Mood-Related Behavior, Gene Expression, Mitochondrial Function, and Dendritic Architecture in the Rat Medial Prefrontal Cortex.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin shapes emotional neurocircuit development, and serotonergic neurotransmission is implicated in both the pathophysiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine is a common first-line treatment for childhood and adolescent mood disorders due to a favorable risk-benefit profile. Using a rodent model, we addressed specific long-term behavioral, molecular, bioenergetic, and cytoarchitectural consequences of postnatal fluoxetine (PNFlx) and juvenile fluoxetine (JFlx) treatment. METHODS: Rat pups received PNFlx (postna

Combination protein biomarkers predict multiple sclerosis diagnosis and outcomes.

Establishing biomarkers to predict multiple sclerosis diagnosis and prognosis has been challenging using a single biomarker approach. We hypothesised that a combination of biomarkers would increase the accuracy of prediction models to differentiate multiple sclerosis from other neurological disorders and enhance prognostication for people with multiple sclerosis. We measured 24 fluid biomarkers in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of 77 people with multiple sclerosis and 80 people with other neurological disorders, using ELISA or Single Molecule Array assays. Primary outcomes were multiple scl

Social Interaction in Adolescent Rats with Neonatal Ethanol Exposure: Impact of Sex and CE-123, a Selective Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) demonstrate deficits in social functioning that contribute to early withdrawal from school and delinquency, as well as the development of anxiety and depression. Dopamine is involved in reward, motivation, and social behavior. Thus, we evaluated whether neonatal ethanol exposure (in an animal model of FASDs) has an impact on social recognition memory using the three-chamber social novelty discrimination test during early and middle adolescence in male and female rats, and whether the modafinil analog, the novel atypical dopamine reuptake i

Baseline characteristics of the North American prodromal Synucleinopathy cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is widely considered a prodromal synucleinopathy, as most with RBD develop overt synucleinopathy within ~10 years. Accordingly, RBD offers an opportunity to test potential treatments at the earliest stages of synucleinopathy. The North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy (NAPS) Consortium has created a multisite RBD participant, primarily clinic-based cohort to better understand characteristics at diagnosis, and in future work, identify predictors of phenoconversion, develop synucleinopathy biomarkers, and enable early stage clin

Association of melasma with thyroid autoimmunity and other thyroidal abnormalities and their relationship to the origin of the melasma.

Melasma is localized hyperpigmentation over the forehead, upper lips, cheeks, and chin. In this study, evidence suggesting an association between autoimmune thyroid disorders and melasma and the relationship of thyroid disorders to the origin of melasma is presented. A total of 108 nonpregnant women, aged 20-56 yr, were divided into 2 groups for the purpose of this study: 1) melasma, 84 patients; 2) control group, 24 patients from the Dermatology Clinic matched for age and sex. Microsomal thyroid autoantibodies (MCHA) were sought in all subjects. TRH-TSH tests were performed in patients with m

Adolescent Vitamin D Supplementation Reverses Neuroplasticity and Motivational Deficits Induced by Developmental Alcohol Exposure and Early-Life Stress.

Early postnatal ethanol exposure (PNEE) and early-life stress (ELS) are major contributors to persistent deficits in cognition, motivation and emotional regulation. These insults disrupt hippocampal plasticity and increase vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Vitamin D (VitD), a neuroactive steroid, has emerged as a potential modulator of neurodevelopment and plasticity. We investigated whether adolescent VitD supplementation could mitigate behavioural and neuroplastic impairments resulting from early exposure to ethanol and maternal separation. On postnatal day (PND) 2, 64 Wistar rat pups

Understanding the neurobehavioural impact of Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A multicentre European study.

UNLABELLED: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe X-linked disorder characterised by dystrophin deficiency, leading to progressive muscle degeneration and reduced life expectancy. Recent studies report neurodevelopmental and psychiatric comorbidities, though their manifestations remain only partially understood. In this multicentre European study, conducted within the Brain Involvement iN Dystrophinopathies (BIND) consortium, we assessed neurobehavioural outcomes in 238 males aged 5–17 years with genetically confirmed DMD, using standardised parent-report questionnaires. Parent-reporte

Predictors of non-drug psychiatric/psychotherapeutic treatment in children and adolescents with mental or behavioural disorders.

Children and adolescents with mental health problems need effective and safe therapies to support their emotional and social development and to avoid functional impairment and progress of social deficits. Though psychotropic drugs seem to be the preferential treatment, psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions are essential in mental health care. For Germany, current data on the utilization of psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions in children with mental health problems is lacking. To analyse why certain children and adolescents with mental or behavioural disorders do and others do n

Sex dependent transmission of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome associated with a reciprocal translocation t(9;11)(p11.2;p15.5).

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a disorder associated with neonatal hypoglycaemia, increased growth potential, and predisposition to Wilms's tumour (WT) and other malignancies, has been mapped to 11p15. The association with 11p15 duplications of paternal origin, of balanced translocations and inversions with breakpoints within 11p15.4-p15.5 of maternal origin, and the demonstration of uniparental paternal 11p15 isodisomy in some sporadic cases point towards the involvement of genomic imprinting. In agreement with this, we show the paternal origin of a de novo 9;11 translocation in a phenoty

Parenting Beyond the Home: Effects of Neighborhood Disorder and Social Relations on Family Management Practices.

Family management practices can safeguard children and adolescents against the effects of neighborhood conditions such as disorder and violence. Drawing from Furstenberg and colleagues' (1999) family management model, we build on prior research incorporating the influence of neighborhood factors like disorder and structural characteristics on within- and outside-the-home family management. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, we employ hierarchical linear and generalized linear modeling to assess how neighborhood features influence applied family managemen

Gender differences in the associations of psychosocial trauma and acute medical stressors with immune system activation and dementia risk.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative review synthesizing the literature on differences between women and men in relationships among certain stressors associated with immune system activation and their relationship to cognitive dysfunction and dementia. Method: We review the cycle of stress leading to neuroinflammation via cortisol and neurochemical alterations, cell-mediated immune system activation, and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and how this is implicated in the development of dementia. We follow this by discussing sex differences in stress physiology and immune

Rare Association between Two Genetic Conditions: Turner Syndrome and Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Turner's syndrome (TS) is a sex chromosome disorder due to loss of either all or part of the X chromosome, in some or all the cells of the body. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is a multisystemic genetic disorder that is only rarely observed in association with Turner syndrome. Only six cases of Turner syndrome associated with NF-1 have been reported in the literature. In this study, we report the first case with TS and NF-1 in a Moroccan child. Case Report. A 16-year-old female was born of a nonconsanguineous marriage. In her family history, her mother had multiple café-au-lait spots with Lis
