A novel technique for accurate electrode placement over cortical targets for transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) clinical trials.

Objective. We present an easy-to-implement technique for accurate electrode placement over repeated transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) sessions across participants and time. tES is an emerging, non-invasive neuromodulation technique that delivers electrical stimulation using scalp electrodes.Approach.The tES electrode placement technique was developed during an exploratory clinical trial aimed at targeting a specific MNI-atlas cortical coordinate inN= 59 depressed participants (32 F, mean age: 31.1 ± 8.3 SD). Each participant completed 12 sessions of active or sham stimulation, administ

6-Nitrodopamine is an endogenous mediator of rat isolated epididymal vas deferens contractions induced by electric-field stimulation.

6-nitrodopamine (6-ND) is released from human umbilical cord vessels and modulates vascular reactivity by acting as a dopamine antagonist. Here we investigate whether 6-ND is released by the rat isolated vas deferens and its effect on this tissue. Dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and 6-ND levels were quantified in rat isolated vas deferens by LC-MS-MS. Electric-field stimulation (EFS) and concentration-response curves to 6-ND, noradrenaline, dopamine and adrenaline were performed in the absence and in the presence (30 min) of L-NAME, SCH-23390, haloperidol, PG-01037, sonepiprazole, desipram

Electrical conductivity as a driver of biological and geological spatial heterogeneity in the Puquios, Salar de Llamara, Atacama Desert, Chile.

Reputed to be the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert in the Central Andes of Northern Chile is an extreme environment with high UV radiation, wide temperature variation, and minimum precipitation. Scarce lagoons associated with salt flats (salars) in this desert are the surface expression of shallow groundwater; these ponds serve as refugia for life and often host microbial communities associated with evaporitic mineral deposition. Results based on multidisciplinary field campaigns and associated laboratory examination of samples collected from the Puquios of the Salar de Llamara i

Can static electric fields increase the activity of nitric oxide synthase and induce oxidative stress and damage of spleen?

With the rapid development of ultra-high-voltage (UHV) direct-current (DC) transmissions, the impact of static electric fields (SEF) in the vicinity of overhead UHV DC transmission lines on health has aroused much public concern. This study explored the effects of 56.3kV/m SEF on the spleen of mice. Results showed that SEF exposure of 21days significantly increased malonic dialdehyde content, superoxide dismutase activity, calcineurin activity, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, and the mRNA expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in the spleen and

A focal brain-cooling device as an alternative to electrical stimulation for language mapping during awake craniotomy: patient series.

BACKGROUND: Functional mapping in awake craniotomy has the potential risk of electrical stimulation-related seizure. The authors have developed a novel mapping technique using a brain-cooling device. The cooling probe is cylindrical in shape with a thermoelectric cooling plate (10 × 10 mm) at the bottom. A proportional integration and differentiation-controlled system adjusts the temperature accurately (Japan patent no. P5688666). The authors used it in two patients with glioblastoma. Broca's area was identified by electrical stimulation, and then the cooling probe set at 5°C was attempted on

Electrical Stimulation of Injected Muscles to Boost Botulinum Toxin Effect on Spasticity: Rationale, Systematic Review and State of the Art.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) represents a first-line treatment for spasticity, a common disabling consequence of many neurological diseases. Electrical stimulation of motor nerve endings has been reported to boost the effect of BoNT-A. To date, a wide range of stimulation protocols has been proposed in the literature. We conducted a systematic review of current literature on the protocols of electrical stimulation to boost the effect of BoNT-A injection in patients with spasticity. A systematic search using the MeSH terms "electric stimulation", "muscle spasticity" and "botulinum toxins" an

Interface dependence of electrical contact and graphene doping in graphene/XPtY (X, Y = S, Se, and Te) heterostructures.

The electrical contact and graphene (Gr) doping for Gr/XPtY (X, Y = S, Se, and Te) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are studied by using first-principles methods. The intrinsic electronic properties of Gr and PtXY are preserved due to the weak vdW interactions. We find that the types of interfacial electrical contact and Gr doping are closely related to the interface chalcogen atoms. The n-type Ohmic contact is formed in the Gr/SPtY (Y = S, Se, and Te) systems. The n-type and p-type Schottky contacts are realized in the Gr/SePtY and Gr/TePtY systems, respectively. The physical mechanism of

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation on gastrointestinal function after laparoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction (PGD) leading to nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distension are common complications after laparoscopic surgery for abdominal diseases. However, drugs cannot completely stop PGD. Over the years, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) therapy has shown potential in preventing PGD, but there is no medical evidence that TEAS represents the best choice for the treatment of PGD. This network meta-analysis sought to evaluate the effectiveness of TEAS therapy in preventing PGD in patients after abdominal laparoscopic surgery. METH

Using the heat generated from electrically conductive concrete slabs to reduce antibiotic resistance in beef cattle manure.

Proper treatment is necessary to reduce antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure before land application. Conventional stockpiling suffers unreliable removal efficiency, while composting can be complicated and expensive. The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of a novel heat-based technology, i.e., stockpiling manure on conductive concrete slabs, to inactivate ARB and ARGs in beef cattle manure. In this study, two independent bench-scale trials were conducted. In both trials, samples were taken from manure piles on conducti
