Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) is a clinical manifestation of the reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection and is more common in people with diminished cell-mediated immunity. Lesions and pain correspond to the affected dermatomes, mostly in first or second trigeminal branch and progress from maculae, papules to vesicles and form pustules, and crusts. Complications are cutaneous, visceral, neurological, ocular, but the most debilitating is post-herpetic neuralgia. Herpes zoster ophthalmicus may affect all the ophthalmic structures, but most severe eye-threatening complic

Breast and lung cancers are the most common primary neoplasms to manifest with choroidal metastases. The incidence of choroidal metastases from metastatic lung cancer was reported to be 2-6.7%. We report a case of bilateral choroidal metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer. A 59-year-old Caucasian female patient, never a smoker, was diagnosed with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma metastatic to the pleura, bones, and the brain. Her initial scan of the chest showed innumerable soft tissue nodules and mediastinal adenopathy compatible with metastatic disease. Her initial brain MRI showed numerous

Facial recognition relies on distinct and parallel types of processing: featural processing focuses on the individual components of a face (e.g., the shape or the size of the eyes), whereas configural (or "relational") processing considers the spatial interrelationships among the single facial components (e.g., distance of the mouth from the nose). Previous neuroimaging evidence has suggested that featural and configural processes may rely on different brain circuits. By using rTMS, here we show for the first time a double dissociation in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for different aspects of

Filariasis is an endemic disease in tropical and subtropical countries. Filarial nematodes can infect humans through vectors, commonly mosquitoes. Human infection can manifest as lymphatic filariasis, subcutaneous or pulmonary nodules and with eye involvement. Intra-oral presentation is very rare and often poses a diagnostic dilemma to the dentist. We report a case of intra-oral Dirofilaria repens infection in a 54-year-old female patient, involving the buccal mucosa. History was unremarkable and on clinical examination, a diffuse swelling with no significant signs and symptoms was seen. Labor

Ocular involvement in Churg-Strauss syndrome is infrequent. We describe the case of a 54-year-old woman with eosinophilia and involvement of the respiratory tract, skin, and peripheral nervous system, fulfilling the American College of Rheumatology criteria for Churg-Strauss syndrome. The patient presented with acute, painless vision loss in her right eye. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) without accompanying retinal vasculitis was diagnosed by angiographic findings and funduscopic findings of retinal whitening with a cherry-red spot. Although her antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (AN

Planar cell polarity (PCP) or tissue polarity describes a coordinated polarity at the plane of the tissue where most or all cells within a tissue are polarized in one direction. It is perpendicular to the apical-basal polarity of the cell. PCP is manifested readily in the Drosophila wing and cuticle bristles, Drosophila eye ommatidia, and mammalian hair and inner ear hair bundles, and less evidently, in cellular processes such as in the coordinated, directional cell movements, and oriented cell divisions that are important for tissue morphogenesis. Several distinct molecular and cellular proce

PURPOSE: To present a novel technique for the implantation of phakic iris-claw intraocular lenses (IOL) in highly myopic cases.
METHODS: Twelve cases, under the age of 40, with high myopia were included in this retrospective study. The mean follow-up span was 14.4+/-5.8 months. Phakic iris-claw IOL implantation was performed, through a 5.5 or 6.5 mm self sealing scleral tunnel with Bursa technique. No suturing and opening a peripheral iridectomy or iridotomy was required in our study. Pre- and postoperative patient evaluation included manifest and cycloplegic refractions, uncorrected visual a

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder characterized by ectopic connective tissue mineralization, with clinical manifestations primarily in the skin, eyes, and cardiovascular system. There is considerable, both intra- and interfamilial, variability in the spectrum of phenotypic presentation. Previous studies have suggested that mineral content of the diet may modify the severity of the clinical phenotype in PXE. In this study, we utilized a targeted mutant mouse (Abcc6(-/-)) as a model system for PXE. We examined the effects of changes in dietary phosphat

Marfan syndrome is a heritable disorder of connective tissue that can affect the heart, blood vessels, lungs, eyes, bones, and ligaments. It is characterized by tall stature, elongated extremities, scoliosis, and a protruded or caved-in breastbone. Patients typically have a long, narrow face. A high-arched palate produced by a narrow maxilla and skeletal Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathia are other common features. For a patient with no family history of the disorder, at least three body systems must be affected before a diagnosis can be made. Individuals affected by the synd

The inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), notably Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are systemic inflammatory diseases primarily involving the gastrointestinal tract. Twenty percent to 40% of patients with IBD develop extraintestinal inflammation and symptoms, known as extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs).1-7 The most common EIMs affect the joints, skin, eyes, and biliary tract. The EIMs associated with IBD bear a negative impact on patients with UC and CD. Thus, the successful treatment of EIMs is essential for improving the quality of life of IBD patients. For most EIMs, their

Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic disease of unknown etiology. The disease is common in blacks and is very rare in Thailand. It presents as one of the most variable manifestations usually affecting the lungs and intrathoracic lymph nodes. Other organs such as liver, spleen, joints and eyes including skin are also involved The common cutaneous lesions are maculopapular, erythematous plaque, subcutaneous nodule, scar and lupus pernio. No reliable indicator is useful for diagnosis except the histopathologic change which is the only way for approaching this disease. Sarcoidosis is the disease of excl

Oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by pleiotropic developmental anomalies of the limbs, teeth, face and eyes that was shown recently to be caused by mutations in the gap junction protein alpha 1 gene (GJA1), encoding connexin 43 (Cx43). In the course of performing an N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea mutagenesis screen, we identified a dominant mouse mutation that exhibits many classic symptoms of ODDD, including syndactyly, enamel hypoplasia, craniofacial anomalies and cardiac dysfunction. Positional cloning revealed that these mice carry a point mutation i

Whipple's disease is a rare chronic infectious disorder first described in 1907 by G.H. Whipple. The disorder is caused by the newly identified bacterium Tropheryma whipplei and there is evidence that altered immune functions play a role in the manifestation of the disease. The organ systems mostly affected are the joints and the gut, and in the further course often also the heart, lung, brain, and eyes. The intestinal involvement occurs with abdominal pain and diarrhea, which leads to weight loss, malnutrition, and anemia. In some cases the infection spreads to the central nervous system, whi

Residual hand use in functional tasks, extent of laterality, and right or left preference were studied in 145 2- to 24-year-old, postregression Australian subjects with Rett syndrome via parent questionnaire. Hand use was markedly restricted, more for complex than simple and for external (touching food and objects) than internal tasks (scratching, rubbing eyes), suggesting a deficit in cerebral control of external, goal-oriented hand use, which is perhaps genetically determined because there is significantly greater restriction of external tasks in subjects with demonstrated MECP2 mutations. Recent advances in systemic treatments for mucopolysaccharidosis have led to therapies that improve the multiple somatic features of this disease, but the therapeutic effect on ocular manifestations such as corneal clouding is not satisfactory. Here, we administered an adenovirus expressing human beta-glucuronidase (AxCAhGUS) into the anterior chamber or intrastromal region of the cornea in mice with mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (B6/MPSVII), and successfully treated corneal clouding of MPSVII. When we injected AxCAhGUS into the anterior chamber of the eyes, cells expressing beta-glucuronidas

BACKGROUND: Bilateral simultaneous acute amaurosis as a primary manifestation of demyelinating disease is extremely rare.
PATIENT: The clinical course of a 24-year-old patient who initially presented with a bilateral complete loss of vision is demonstrated. Morphologically both optic discs appeared slightly blurred and prominent. Otherwise there were no anterior and posterior segment abnormalities. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed an increased number of cells and protein without oligoclonal bands. On MRI multiple white matter lesions were visible. Laboratory tests showed no spe
