The role of autologous micrografts injection from the scalp tissue in the treatment of COVID-19 associated telogen effluvium: Clinical and trichoscopic evaluation.

The clinical presentation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2 COVID-19) varies from asymptomatic infection to a life-threatening, multiorgan disease. One of these manifestations is telogen effluvium (TE) which is characterized by diffuse hair loss occurring in patients previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and lasts ~3 months, after which excessive hair loss follows. Hair follicles are known to contain a well-characterized niche for adult stem cells which is the bulge containing epithelial and melanocytic stem cells. Stem cells in the hair bulge, a demarcated structure

Amelioration of Androgenetic Alopecia by Algal Oligosaccharides Prepared by Deep-Sea Bacterium Biodegradation.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-mediated hair loss disorder characterized by shortened anagen hair cycle. Oligosaccharides derived from seaweeds possess diverse biological functions. However, little is known about their effects on AGA. In this study, algal oligosaccharide (AOS) was characterized for its mitigation effects on key features involved in AGA pathogenesis, such as DHT- mediated cellular signaling and shortened anagen hair cycle. AOS with varying degrees of polymerization (DP), namely, AOS (DP2), AOS (DP4-6), and AOS (DP8-12), were prepared by agar biodegra

c-Jun N-Terminal Phosphorylation: Biomarker for Cellular Stress Rather than Cell Death in the Injured Cochlea.

Prevention of auditory hair cell death offers therapeutic potential to rescue hearing. Pharmacological blockade of JNK/c-Jun signaling attenuates injury-induced hair cell loss, but with unsolved mechanisms. We have characterized the c-Jun stress response in the mouse cochlea challenged with acoustic overstimulation and ototoxins, by studying the dynamics of c-Jun N-terminal phosphorylation. It occurred acutely in glial-like supporting cells, inner hair cells, and the cells of the cochlear ion trafficking route, and was rapidly downregulated after exposures. Notably, death-prone outer hair cell

Human Body Burden and Dietary Methylmercury Intake: The Relationship in a Rice-Consuming Population.

Rice can be the main route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for rice-consuming populations living in area where mercury (Hg) is mined. However, the current risk assessment paradigm for MeHg exposure is based on epidemiological data collected from fish-consuming populations. This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between dietary MeHg intake and human body burden in a rice -consuming population from the Wanshan Hg mining area in China. Hair MeHg concentrations averaged 2.07 ± 1.79 μg/g, and the average blood MeHg concentration across the study area ranged from 2.20 to 9.36 μg/L. Me

Cell degeneration is not a primary causer for Connexin26 (GJB2) deficiency associated hearing loss.

Connexin26 (Cx26, GJB2) mutations can induce congenital deafness and are responsible for ∼50% of nonsyndromic hearing loss in children. Mouse models show that Cx26 deficiency induces cochlear development disorder, hair cell loss, and spiral ganglion (SG) neuron degeneration. Hair cell loss and cell degeneration have been considered as a primary causer responsible for Cx26 deficiency associated hearing loss. In this study, by coincidental examination of cochlear postnatal development with recording of auditory brainstem response (ABR) and hair cell function, we found that occurrence of hearing

Stem cells and alopecia: a review of pathogenesis.

Recent work has focused on the hair follicle as the main source of multipotent stem cells in the skin. The hair follicle bulge contains multipotent stem cells that can form the epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands and help in repopulation of the epidermis after injury. The localization of these stem cells to the bulge area may explain why some types of inflammatory alopecia cause permanent loss of hair (cicatricial alopecia) (such as lichen planopilaris and discoid lupus erythematosus), while others (such as alopecia areata) are reversible (noncicatricial alopecia). The lack of disti

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease where inflammation around the lowest part of the hair follicle results in non-scarring hair loss. This review investigates the course of the disease, its unpredictability and variation from a single patch of scalp hair loss to the loss of all hair on the body. The first drug with AA indication was approved in 2022, the JAK-inhibitor baricitinib. This paves the way for future research that may lead to the development of new effective pathogenesis-specific treatments.

Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma versus Mesotherapy with Recombinant Growth Factors and Stem Cell-Conditioned Media in Androgenetic Alopecia: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and mesotherapy (MZT) injections of various solutions fortified with growth factors are popular treatment options for AGA. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of RPP and MZT products in the treatment of AGA. METHODS: This retrospective study included 72 AGA patients treated with two PRP formulations and two MZT products, administered manually or with a gun injector. Hair parameters (hair thickness, hair density, and hair count) on frontal and vertex areas were measured befo

Rare oto-tricho-tussia/tinnitus: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Oto-tricho is associated with the symptoms of gag reflex and non-neuropathic tinnitus, which can be treated by removing the hair and its follicle. ABSTRACT: Oto-tricho refers to a disorder of hair growth in the tympanic membrane (TM). In its early stages, it can manifest as symptoms such as tinnitus, chronic pain, cough, and nausea. If left untreated, it can potentially lead to tympanosclerosis, TM micro-perforation, and hearing loss. In this report, we present a case study of a 33-year-old male with hair and follicle growth observed on the left TM. Over the course of th

Telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is one of the most common causes of diffuse nonscarring hair loss. In its acute form, it generates a lot of anxiety in the patient, which can be significantly allayed with a confident diagnosis. In its more chronic form, however, the hair loss may go unnoticed for long periods of time. Here in, the dermatologist's role in differentiating it from the more common patterned hair loss is significant. Differentiating TE from other causes of diffuse nonscarring hair loss can indeed be a daunting task and TE is often used as a waste basket diagnosis. A number of factors have be

Determination of cis/trans phase of variations in the MC1R gene with allele-specific PCR and single base extension.

The MC1R gene encodes a protein with key regulatory functions in the melanin synthesis. A multiplex PCR and a multiplex single base extension protocol were established for genotyping six exonic MC1R variations highly penetrant for red hair (R), four exonic MC1R variations weakly penetrant for red hair (r), two frameshift variations highly penetrant for red hair (R) and three variations in the promoter region. We genotyped 600 individuals from Denmark using either CE or MALDI-TOF MS as the detection platform. A total of 62 individuals were genotyped R/R and among the 62 individuals, 57 had red

Hairy intraoral flap--an unusual indication for laser epilation: a series of 5 cases and review of the literature.

A variety of the flaps used to reconstruct defects of the head and neck region following surgery for malignant disease contain hair follicles that may result in unwanted hair growth. This can cause significant distress to the patients in a variety of ways. We report 5 cases of significant intraoral hair growth of which 4 cases were successfully managed with long-pulsed alexandrite laser. One patient was not treated due to technical difficulties. We review the literature on the management of hair growth on intraoral flaps.

[Trichorrhexis nodosa in electron microscopy].

Trichorrhexis nodosa, i. e. a hair fracturing into brush-like widened stumps, was analyzed in an imbecile 4 year-old boy without any sign of aminoaciduria or disturbance of copper metabolism. Scanning electron microscopy showed smoothed hair cuticula with irregular ridges and surface splitting. According to the transmission electron microscopy disintegration of superficial and profound cuticular elements as well was due to progressive development of vacuoles and clefts in amorphous keratin.
