3D virtual histopathology of cardiac tissue from Covid-19 patients based on phase-contrast X-ray tomography.

For the first time, we have used phase-contrast X-ray tomography to characterize the three-dimensional (3d) structure of cardiac tissue from patients who succumbed to Covid-19. By extending conventional histopathological examination by a third dimension, the delicate pathological changes of the vascular system of severe Covid-19 progressions can be analyzed, fully quantified and compared to other types of viral myocarditis and controls. To this end, cardiac samples with a cross-section of 3.5mm were scanned at a laboratory setup as well as at a parallel beam setup at a synchrotron radiation fa

Abnormal meta-state activation of dynamic brain networks across the Alzheimer spectrum.

The characterization of the distinct dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) patterns that activate in the brain during rest can help to understand the underlying time-varying network organization. The presence and behavior of these patterns (known as meta-states) have been widely studied by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, modalities with high-temporal resolution, such as electroencephalography (EEG), enable the characterization of fast temporally evolving meta-state sequences. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been

3D evaluation of the morphological and volumetric changes of the tongue and oral cavity before and after orthognathic surgery for mandibular prognathism: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: The volumetric ratio of the tongue to the oral cavity has been recognized to be one of the important factors for the maintenance of stable occlusion. Oral cavity capacity is changed after orthognathic surgery in patients with mandibular prognathism; however, the volumetric changes of the oral cavity including the tongue before and after surgery have not been analyzed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphological and volumetric changes of the tongue and oral cavity following orthognathic surgery using a newly developed vinyl polysiloxane impression method. Three-dimensional CBCT based evaluation of the inferior part of the maxillary sinus: Retrospective Study.

The maxillary sinus is the largest of the four paranasal sinuses in humans, and its close proximity to the teeth means that caution is required during dental treatment. In particular, implant surgeries involving the maxillary posterior teeth should include evaluating the inferior part of the maxillary sinus. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences by comparing the inferior part of the maxillary sinus based on the nasal cavity floor (NCF) between patients (male 30, female 30) genders through the use of the three-dimensional (3-D) program that can facilitate 3-D visualizations.

Nonlinear Optics with Near-Infrared Excitation Enable Real-Time Quantitative Diagnosis of Human Cervical Cancers.

Histopathologic analysis through biopsy has been one of the most useful methods for the assessment of malignant neoplasms. However, some aspects of the analysis such as invasiveness, evaluation range, and turnaround time from biopsy to report could be improved. Here, we report a novel method for visualizing human cervical tissue three-dimensionally, without biopsy, fixation, or staining, and with sufficient quality for histologic diagnosis. Near-infrared excitation and nonlinear optics were employed to visualize unstained human epithelial tissues of the cervix uteri by constructing images with

Computerized optical impression making of edentulous jaws - An in vivo feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Within the specialty of prosthodontics, oral impressions are ubiquitous tools utilized to transfer intraoral characteristics such as teeth, implants, and soft tissue into a physical state (stone cast) that is processable in a laboratory setting for the fabrication of dental restorations. In recent years, optical impression systems have become ubiquitous in clinical practice replacing the conventional method of impression making. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of computerized optical impression making of edentulous jaws in an in vivo setti

Synchrotron "virtual archaeozoology" reveals how Ancient Egyptians prepared a decaying crocodile cadaver for mummification.

Although Ancient Egyptians mummified millions of animals over the course of one millennium, many details of these mummification protocols remain unknown. Multi-scale propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography was used to visualise an ancient Egyptian crocodile mummy housed at the Musée des Confluences (Lyon, France). This state-of-the-art non-destructive imaging technique revealed the complete interior anatomy of the mummy in three dimensions. Here, we present detailed insight into the complex post-mortem treatment of a decaying crocodile cadaver in preparation for mummificat

The Interhemispheric Transgenual Approach for Microsurgical Removal of Third Ventricle Colloid Cysts. Technical Note.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare benign lesions, which amount to approximately 1% of all intracranial tumors. Because these lesions grow predominantly in the anterior aspect of the third ventricle, they may cause the occlusion of the foramina of Monro, generating obstructive hydrocephalus. Surgery is mandatory in cases of large cysts and/or in symptomatic patients. Among the different surgical strategies described in colloid cysts surgery, the microsurgical transcallosal approach still constitutes the procedure of choice in many centers. In this study, we describe a mo

Refining the resolution of craniofacial dysmorphology in bipolar disorder as an index of brain dysmorphogenesis.

As understanding of the genetics of bipolar disorder increases, controversy endures regarding whether the origins of this illness include early maldevelopment. Clarification would be facilitated by a 'hard' biological index of fetal developmental abnormality, among which craniofacial dysmorphology bears the closest embryological relationship to brain dysmorphogenesis. Therefore, 3D laser surface imaging was used to capture the facial surface of 21 patients with bipolar disorder and 45 control subjects; 21 patients with schizophrenia were also studied. Surface images were subjected to geometric

A high-fidelity 3D S-FEM stress analysis of a highly heterogeneous swine skull.

Fracture healing and growth of the bones are highly related to the stress level. Numerical analysis of stresses is the most effective means to determine the stress level, but it usually requires sufficient resolution to ensure an accurate description of geometry features of bones. In this paper, high-fidelity smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) skull models are created using computed tomography (CT) and micro-computed tomography (μCT) images of a juvenile pig skull. The material properties of the heterogeneous bone are modeled by a varying distribution of Young's modulus mapped to each elem

Three-Dimensional Stereophotogrammetry Assessment of Facial Asymmetry in Facial Palsy.

Three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry is not much used in assessing facial palsy and a comprehensive understanding of sources of variation in these measurements is lacking. The present study assessed intra- and interobserver reliability of a novel three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry measurement of facial asymmetry and examined sources of variation in these outcomes. Three photographs (rest, closed mouth smile, and maximum smile) were made of 60 participants, 30 facial palsy patients and 30 control subjects. All images were analyzed twice by 2 observers independently, to determine intra- an

A systematic quantitative morpho-volumetric analysis in infants with sagittal craniosynostosis and relationship with the severity of scaphocephalic deformity.

PURPOSE: Among patients with isolated sagittal synostosis (ISS), the head shape varies considerably in relation to the severity of the abnormality. This study aimed to quantify skull base morphometry and intracranial volume to investigate their relationships with the severity of scaphocephaly. METHODS: We studied 66 infants with ISS identifying three groups according to the morphological severity of cranial deformity (group I: mild deformity; group II: moderate deformity; group III: severe deformity), by combining two scaphocephaly severity indices as descriptors of the relation of three morp

Clearing method for 3-dimensional immunofluorescence of osteoarthritic subchondral human bone reveals peripheral cholinergic nerves.

The cholinergic system plays a major anti-inflammatory role in many diseases through acetylcholine (Ach) release after vagus nerve stimulation. Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with local low-grade inflammation, but the regulatory mechanisms are unclear. Local Ach release could have anti-inflammatory activity since articular cells express Ach receptors involved in inflammatory responses. Using the 3DISCO clearing protocol that allows whole-sample 3-dimensional (3D) analysis, we cleared human OA cartilage-subchondral bone samples to search for cholinergic nerve fibres able to produce Ach local

A triple-component deep inferior epigastric artery perforator chimeric free flap for three-dimensional reconstruction of a complex knee defect complicated with patella osteomyelitis.

Reconstruction of a complex knee defect is challenging, especially when complicated with osteomyelitis. Complex knee defect requires multi-component three-dimensional reconstruction using a chimeric flap. Although anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap is the most workhorse chimeric flap, another chimeric flap is required when ALT flap is not available. In this report, we present a case of complex knee defect successfully treated with a free triple-component chimeric deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap transfer. Pathological characterization of keel bone fractures in laying hens does not support external trauma as the underlying cause.

Keel bone fractures in laying hens have been described with increasing prevalence from several countries over the last twenty years and are considered one of the greatest welfare problems to the layer industry. In Denmark we have observed fracture prevalence in the range of 53% to 100% in flocks from cage-free systems whereas flock prevalences in birds from enriched cages ranged between 50-98%. Previous research have speculated that the underlying reason for the development of keel bone fractures is trauma in relation to impact of the bird with furniture, other equipment etc. However, little e
