The interplay of coping styles and optimism/pessimism in shaping mental health in long-term survivors of malignant melanoma: a register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Optimism and pessimism are stable, overarching dispositions that influence mental health, especially in stressful life situations, such as cancer survival. They have been associated with more specific coping strategies. This study sought to investigate a theoretically-based model of their interplay in shaping depressive and anxiety symptoms to inform prevention and intervention efforts. METHODS: The registry-based study included 689 survivors of malignant melanoma. We assessed sociodemographic and disease-related variables, optimism/pessimism (LOT-R), coping strategies (BC), depre

Long-term impact of stressful life events on breast cancer risk: A 36-year genetically informed prospective study in the Finnish Twin Cohort.

Breast cancer (BC) is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, but the long-term impact of stressful life events (SLEs) remains unclear. We examine the association between SLEs and BC risk using cohort and twin-pair analyses with 36 years of follow-up in the Finnish Twin Cohort, including 10,342 women and 719 BC cases. SLEs were assessed in 1981 by a questionnaire, while cancer incidence and mortality data were obtained from Finnish registries. Polygenic risk score for breast cancer (PRS-BC) and DNA methylation (DNAm) profiling were used to explore the underlying genetic and epige

Bidirectional causality between liver dysfunction and migraine: A mediating Mendelian randomization study.

Migraine, a highly disabling neurological disorder, has garnered significant attention regarding its association with hepatic metabolism. Observational studies suggest that bilirubin and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) may influence migraine risk, but the confounding effects require rigorous resolution. We aimed to investigate whether genetically predicted levels of bilirubin and AST have a causal effect on migraine risk and to explore potential mediating pathways via brain structural or hepatic biomarkers. This study employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) framework to evaluate th

The Mediation Role of Emotional Symptoms Between Impulsivity Traits and Problematic Gaming Behavior in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Gaming is a global activity of which the largest number of players are adolescents. Although some studies have shown the risks of gaming, very little is known about the association between the proposed video game addiction and the temperamental traits or behavioral (internalizing/externalizing) problems that lead adolescents to problematic gaming. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a model that explains the mediation effect of I/E problems on the effect of impulsivity traits on adolescents' gaming addiction. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 850 S

Delivering HIV-Positive Test Results via Phone: Who Never Answered? Correlates of Undelivered Reactive HIV Results in a U.S. National Cohort of Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals.

Self-testing for HIV is an accessible, effective testing method for clinical and research contexts. From 2017 to 2022, we conducted annual, mail-in HIV testing with participants in our U.S. national longitudinal cohort of 6253 sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals. Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined factors associated with failure to deliver HIV-positive results by phone despite extensive outreach. Of 16,000 samples tested, 315 were reactive (98% cisgender sexual minority men). We successfully delivered two-thirds of reactive results (n = 209). Unsuccessful result deli

Impact of adverse childhood experiences on youth non-suicidal self-injury: the mediating role of rumination.

Adverse childhood experiences and rumination are both risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in depression. However, the interaction among these three factors has not been well researched. This study aimed to investigate the potential mediating role of rumination between adverse childhood experiences and NSSI frequency. To this end, 276 young patients aged 15–30 years with major depressive disorder (MDD) were recruited as the research subjects. General demographic scales and clinical scales were used to assess adverse childhood experiences, rumination, levels of anxiety and depressio

Associations of socioeconomic status and healthy lifestyle with incident early-onset and late-onset hypertension: a nationwide prospective cohort study in the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Low socioeconomic status (SES) and unhealthy lifestyle are known risk factors for hypertension, but their impact on early-onset hypertension remains unclear. METHODS: A nationwide cohort study using UK Biobank data included 128,918 adults. SES was classified as high, medium, or low through latent class analysis of household income, employment, and education. A healthy lifestyle score was based on nonsmoking, moderate alcohol use, physical activity, and diet quality. Early-onset hypertension was defined as diagnosis before age 50; late-onset hypertension was diagnosed at 50 or ol

The relationship between family environments growing up and behavioral health among LGBTQ+ adults: The mediating role of internalized homonegativity.

PURPOSE: Disparities in the behavioral health outcomes for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ (LGBTQ+) adults-such as depression, anxiety, and alcohol use-are often attributed to experiences of discrimination, victimization, and lack of supportive environments, including hetero- and cis-normative family settings. Yet, how family environments in childhood influence LGBTQ+ adults' behavioral health and internalized homonegativity has not been extensively examined. METHODS: This study utilized a U.S. national dataset of LGBTQ+ adults (N = 499). Data were collected in November 2020 u

The Role of Alcohol-Related Protective Behavioral Strategies in the Relationship Among Facets of Trait Impulsivity, Alcohol Use Severity, and Risky Sexual Behavior Among College Students.

Impulsivity and alcohol consumption are linked to increased risky sexual behaviors, but the role of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) in this relationship is underexplored. This study examined whether PBS moderates the relationship among trait impulsivity, alcohol use (AU) severity, and risky sexual behavior (RSB). A moderated mediation analysis was conducted using cross-sectional data from a study on a text-based intervention among college students (n = 524; Mage = 20.93, SD = 3.51; Female = 70.1%). Results showed that greater positive urgency and lack of perseverance were significantly

Pathways From Childhood Maltreatment to Adult Drug Use: The Distinct Roles of Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies have reported associations between child maltreatment and drug use and abuse. We ask whether internalizing and externalizing symptoms during young adulthood mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and illicit drug use and use of prescribed medications later in middle adulthood. METHOD: Using a prospective cohort design, a large group of court-substantiated cases of childhood maltreatment (ages 0-11) and demographically matched controls were followed into adulthood. Internalizing symptoms (depression and anxiety), externalizing symptoms (antisocial p

Intrinsic functional connectivity brain networks mediate effect of age on sociability.

Social interaction has been shown to prolong lifespan and healthspan. For older adults living alone, social interaction largely comes from formal social participation, and thus depends on the sociability of the individual. This study aims to understand the effect of age on sociability, and the possible mechanisms behind the change. 196 German participants aged 20-77 (Mage = 37.9) completed a series of questionnaires as part of the Leipzig Study for Mind-Body-Emotion Interactions. Sociability was measured by a subscale of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (Short Form), and network-

Association between e-health usage and consideration for clinical trial participation: An exploratory study on the mediating role of cancer-related self-efficacy and patient-centered communication.

BACKGROUND: The journey of any new treatment begins in the lab and through a clinical trial. Clinical trials have become an important means to promote public health causes. In digital age, e-health usage (EHU) might be a key factor to promote clinical trials. However, how consideration for clinical trial participation is impacted by EHU remains unclear. METHOD: Secondary analyses were conducted on data from the Health Information National Trends Survey 2020 (HINTS 5, Cycle 4). This study proposed and tested a serial mediation model linking EHU to consideration for clinical trial participation

Household income and children's mental health outcomes: the mediating role of maternal wellbeing and parent-child relationship quality.

Uncertainty remains about the mechanism(s) through which household income influences mental health across the life course. The family stress model suggests the role of parental mental health and child-parent relationship quality may be significant, however few studies have explored this longitudinally. The present study aimed to decompose the pathways from low household income at age 3 to children's mental wellbeing at age 6, via maternal wellbeing (age 4) and parent-child relationship quality (age 5). We included four sweeps of the Growing Up in Scotland Study (n = 3639). Weights and multiple

Plant species richness, green spaces, and preterm birth risk in urban areas.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that urban biodiversity may influence human health, though this relationship remains incompletely understood. While green spaces have shown beneficial effects on birth outcomes, the specific role of plant species richness has not been investigated in relation to preterm birth (PTB, <37 weeks' gestation). METHODS: Using Kaiser Permanente Southern California electronic health records (2015-2021), we analyzed 232,452 births to examine associations between plant species richness and PTB. Plant species richness was assessed at the maternal neighborhood level,
