Longitudinal study of body height, radius length and skeletal maturity in Danish boys with cleft lip and palate.

Body height, radius length and skeletal maturity were registered longitudinally in 48 boys with combined cleft lip and palate (CLP) and compared with measurements in a non-cleft control group. Age range was from 6 to 20 yr. Skeletal maturity was evaluated according to the TW2 method. Distance and velocity curves for radius length and body height were determined by means of a computer program which for each month calculated the median and percentiles of the distribution. Compared to the control group the CLP boys were slightly shorter from 6 to 18 yr of age. The velocity curves revealed that pu

The american alligator (Alligator mississipiensis): a new model for investigating developmental mechanisms in normal and abnormal palate formation.

Despite numerous investigations, there are still many unsolved problems concerning normal and abnormal palatal development. The American Alligator is here put forward as a new model for the investigation of a variety of developmental phenomena associated with palatogenesis. The structure of the palate of the adult Alligator is reported. This animal exhibits a unique combination of reptilian and mammalian features in its craniofacial anatomy and so its craniofacial development should be of considerable interest.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Soft Palate With Indeterminate Imaging and Nondiagnostic Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology: A Case Report.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm and may arise from the minor salivary glands of the palate. Palatal masses can resemble inflammatory, infectious, or other neoplastic lesions, and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) may be nondiagnostic. A 35-year-old woman presented with a painless, gradually enlarging swelling of the left soft palate of three months' duration. Examination revealed a smooth, firm, non-tender, non-ulcerated submucosal mass measuring approximately 3 × 2 cm and extending toward the left tonsillar fossa. Contrast-enhanced computed tomograph

Impact of tongue-palate squeezing on texture perception, oral processing, and bolus properties in hydrocolloid-enriched mashed potato.

Texture critically drives food acceptance or rejection, with oral processing varying widely among individuals and influencing dynamic perception and bolus formation. Adaptive strategies like tongue-palate squeezing often replace chewing in populations with masticatory or swallowing challenges (e.g., tooth loss, sarcopenia, xerostomia), yet their impact on texture perception, muscle activity, and bolus properties remain poorly evaluated, particularly in comparison to traditional chewing. This study compared chewing versus squeezing effects on texture perception, processing parameters (oro-expos

Genetic Associations with Non-Syndromic Cleft Lip/Palate and Dental Caries in Kuwaiti Patients: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Non-syndromic cleft lip/palate (NCL/P) is a prevalent congenital anomaly. Despite an unclear epidemiological link between orofacial clefts and dental caries, genetic studies suggest that polymorphisms in taste receptor genes may influence caries risk. Objectives: This study had two primary objectives: (1) to compare SNPs in NCL/P-associated genes (IRF6, FOXE1) between Kuwaiti NCL/P cases and controls, and (2) to explore whether variants in caries-associated (KLK4, DSPP) and taste receptor (TAS1R2, TAS2R38) genes are associated with dental caries susceptibility in individuals with N

Caught in a web: congenital anterior and posterior oral synechiae with concurrent diaphragmatic hernia and atypical cleft palate.

Congenital oral synechiae are rare fibrous bands connecting the maxillary and mandibular structures. We report a male neonate referred to our oral and maxillofacial surgery service at 16 days of age with bilateral anterior and posterior oral synechiae, an atypical submucous cleft palate, and a concurrent left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia. The synechiae were undetected prenatally and obstructed neonatal intubation in the delivery suite, compounding the immediate airway demands of the diaphragmatic hernia. This triad has not been previously described, and comprehensive genetic testing i

In vitro Assessment of Open-Access Digital Workflow for Presurgical Nasoalveolar Molding in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

PURPOSE: To evaluate digitally fabricated nasoalveolar molding (NAM) prostheses using open-source software against conventionally manufactured prostheses using an in vitro assessment of material mechanical properties, and fabrication efficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following IRB approval, a retrospective, in vitro comparative study was conducted using previously obtained, deidentified neonatal maxillary gypsum casts from patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. NAM prostheses were fabricated using either conventional cold-cure acrylic resin or a digital workflow using open-access sof

Economic Valuation and Disability Averted After Cleft Lip and/or Palate Repair in Botswana From 2018 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about access to surgical care for patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in Botswana, nor have the effects on both the patient and the societal level been quantified. This study aims to assess the impact of CL/P repair on patient disability and economic productivity over a 5-year period in Botswana. METHODS: A retrospective review of on-site surgical logbooks was used to identify all primary CL/P procedures from 2018 to 2022 across 6 geographically diverse hospitals throughout Botswana. Demographic and procedure-level data were collected. Disability-adjusted

Prenatal Phenotype of Common Arterial Trunk With Tricuspid Atresia and Bilateral Cleft Lip-Palate With Novel MASP1 Variant.

What is already known about this topic? ◦. 3 MC syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with limited prenatal reports. ◦. Cardiac anomalies are rarely described and only postnatally. What does this study add? ◦. First trimester prenatal suspicion of 3 MC syndrome confirmed by genetics and autopsy. ◦. Dual cardiac anomaly (common arterial trunk with tricuspid atresia) not previously described. ◦. Highlights persistent elbow flexion as a consistent prenatal finding. ◦. Expands the prenatal phenotype‐genotype spectrum with a novel homozygous MASP1 nonsense variant.

Evaluating the Quality of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Information on Cleft Lip and Palate: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly consulted for information about cleft lip and palate (CLP), yet the reliability of their outputs across clinical domains has not been evaluated. This study aimed to compare the quality of CLP-related information generated by GPT-4o and Gemini 2.5 Pro across multiple thematic domains using a validated quality instrument and a reliability-first analytic framework. METHODS: Fifty-four standardized CLP questions across six domains were submitted to GPT-4o (OpenAI) and Gemini 2.5 Pro (Google DeepMind) on 25 September 2024 via the
