Incorporation of transperineal ultrasonography and pelvic electromyography into the real clinical setting for the prediction of postpartum stress urinary incontinence.

AIM: Risk factors for predicting postpartum stress urinary incontinence (SUI) attract increasingly more attention. Here, we incorporate transperineal ultrasonography (US) and pelvic floor electromyography into the real clinical setting, aiming to evaluate various risk factors comprehensively and objectively and weigh their roles in predicting postpartum SUI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 530 subjects were enrolled. SUI was diagnosed using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form. The clinical, ultrasonographic, and myoelectric data of the subjects were colle

Patterns of Non-fatal Overdose and Injection-Related Bacterial Infections During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Year Among New York State Residents.

OBJECTIVES: Overdoses are a leading cause of maternal mortality in the US, but limited evidence exists about patterns of nonfatal overdose, a key risk factor for subsequent fatal overdose, or of other drug-related harms. Here, we estimate prevalences of nonfatal overdose and injection-related endocarditis and abscesses/cellulitis across the 21 months spanning pregnancy and the postpartum year. METHODS: Among people who experienced an in-hospital birth in New York State between 9/1/2016 and 1/1/2018 (N = 330,872), we estimated the prevalences of hospital-based diagnoses of nonfatal overdose an

Parental Leave Benefits and Maternal Postpartum Mental Health in Sweden.

IMPORTANCE: Generous parental leave benefits have been associated with better mental health outcomes for parents after childbirth. However, few studies account for preconception mental health and working conditions, the latter being a requirement for generous parental leave benefits. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between levels of parental leave benefits and maternal postpartum mental health when preconception mental health, income, and employment status were considered. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based nationwide cohort study included first-time mothers aged

Chromium and palmitic acid supplementation modulate adipose tissue insulin sensitivity in postpartum dairy cows.

Periparturient dairy cows exhibit intense lipolysis driven by reduced DMI, enhanced energy needs, and the loss of adipose tissue (AT) insulin sensitivity. Extended periods of low insulin sensitivity and negative energy balance induce lipolysis dysregulation, leading to increased disease susceptibility and poor lactation performance. Chromium (Cr) supplementation improves systemic insulin sensitivity, whereas palmitic acid (PA) increases energy availability for milk production. However, the effect of supplementing Cr and PA alone or in combination on insulin sensitivity in AT is unknown. A tota

Catholic Hospital Affiliation and Postpartum Contraceptive Care and Subsequent Deliveries.

IMPORTANCE: In recent years, the number of Catholic hospitals has grown, raising concerns about access to contraception. The association between living in an area in which the closest hospital is Catholic and the probability of postpartum contraception and subsequent deliveries is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether living in an area in which the closest hospital was Catholic was associated with the probability of postpartum contraception and subsequent deliveries. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's State Inpati

Acceptability of identification and management of perinatal anxiety: a qualitative interview study with postnatal women.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety in pregnancy and postpartum is highly prevalent but under-recognized and few women receive adequate support or treatment. Identification and management of perinatal anxiety must be acceptable to women in the perinatal period to ensure that women receive appropriate care when needed. We aimed to understand the acceptability to women of how anxiety was identified and managed by healthcare professionals. METHOD: We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 60 women across England and Scotland approximately 10 months after birth. Women were sampled from an existing system

Postpartum Management of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in Six Large U.S. Hospital Systems: Descriptive Review and Identification of Clinical and Research Gaps.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) are a key contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. Several gaps in knowledge remain regarding best practices in the postpartum management of HDPs. In this review, we describe postpartum HDPs management among six large academic U.S. hospital systems: Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Pittsburgh, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern University, University of Minnesota, and Boston Medical Center. We identified that all six health systems discharge patients with HDPs diagnosed with a blood pressure (BP) cuff and use the same two

Remote blood pressure monitoring in women at risk of or with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Remote blood pressure monitoring refers to an organized framework that either allows clinicians to review home-based blood pressure readings and institute management, or provide participants with clear instructions for contacting care teams when blood pressure readings are out of prespecified targets. With widespread uptake of telemonitoring and mobile health in recent years, such models of care have been increasingly described in the literature. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to review remote blood pressure monitoring in pregnant and postpartum women who are at high-risk for or hav

The effects of body dysmorphic disorder on women's quality of life and body image at difference stages of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a time of great change for women, both mentally and physically. For any pregnant woman, this time of change can be difficult as the woman needs to constantly adapt to the rapidly changing body. This change could be especially challenging for a woman who has previously struggled with symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which cause individuals to perceive part(s) of their body as particularly ugly or deformed, creating distress that affects several areas of functioning. These distorted perceptions have been associated with low self-reported functioning in physica

Evaluation of Maternal Factors Affecting Postpartum Insulin Resistance Markers in Mothers with Gestational Diabetes-A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined by an insufficient insulin response to counteract the insulin resistance (IR) that arises from the physiological adaptations associated with pregnancy. However, the pathophysiology of IR is complex and unclear, as it encompasses elements such as epigenetics, environmental factors, modifiable lifestyle factors, and psychosocial factors. AIM: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of GDM and other maternal factors on IR markers in comparison to mothers with normal glucose tolerance during pregnancy in the first week p

Postpartum readmission risk: a comparison between stillbirths and live births.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth occurs more commonly among pregnant people with comorbid conditions and obstetrical complications. Stillbirth also independently increases maternal morbidity and imparts a psychosocial hazard when compared with live birth. These distinct needs and burden may increase the risk for postpartum readmission after stillbirth. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the risk for maternal postpartum readmission after stillbirth in comparison with live birth and to identify indications for readmission and the associated risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort

Feeding rumen-protected lysine prepartum alters placental metabolism at a transcriptional level.

Rumen-protected Lys (RPL) fed to Holstein cows prepartum resulted in a greater intake and improved health of their calves during the first 6 wk of life. However, whether increased supply of Lys in late gestation can influence placental tissue and, if so, which pathways are affected remain to be investigated. Therefore, we hypothesize that feeding RPL during late gestation could modulate placental metabolism, allowing for improved passage of nutrients to the fetus and thus influencing the offspring development. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of feeding RPL (AjiPro-L Generation 3,

Vitamin D Intake and Serum Levels in Pregnant and Postpartum Women.

Maternal vitamin D deficiency, which is highly prevalent in pregnant women in Europe, is linked to adverse health effects for both the mother and child. The objective was to assess vitamin D status in pregnant women by evaluating their dietary and supplemental vitamin D intake, serum vitamin D levels, parathyroid hormone levels, and lifestyle factors. This cross-sectional study, with a total of 735 participants (145 pregnant and 590 up to the seventh day postpartum), took place in Latvia. Blood samples, a food frequency questionnaire, and medical documentation were used for data collection. Th
