Patient reported outcome measures: their evolution and expansion in urology.

We describe the history of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in medicine, with a focus on the development and use of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) in urologic practice. PROMs emerged in the 1970s with tools like the Sickness Impact Profile, designed to capture patients' perspectives on how disease affects daily life. In the 1990s, PROMs entered urology with the creation of the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the IIEF, developed in 1992 and 1997, respectively. As organizations such as the National Institutes of Health began prioritizing PROMs for ev

Infrared thermography in clinical practice: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Infrared thermography technology is a diagnostic imaging modality that converts temperature information on the surface of the human body into visualised thermograms. This technology has the capacity to intuitively detect the presence of certain abnormal conditions or foci in the human body. In recent years, the application of this technology in medicine has become increasingly extensive, especially in the areas of auxiliary diagnosis and early screening of diseases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to analyse and summarise the application of infrared thermography in clinical

Surgical site infections and sepsis in gynecological surgery.

Despite advancements in infection control, surgical site infections (SSIs) and postoperative sepsis remain significant challenges in gynecological surgery, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In low-income countries, circulatory failure due to septic shock leads to most deaths after surgery, with sepsis accounting for almost two-thirds. This review provides a comprehensive update on the global incidence, risk factors, pathogenesis, and preventive strategies for sepsis and SSIs in gynecological procedures. Utilizing a search of PubMed and Web of Science, recent

Microbiome Shifts in Bladder Cancer: A Narrative Review of Urobiome Composition, Progression, and Therapeutic Impact.

Background/Objectives: Bladder cancer is a common malignancy with a high rate of recurrence and progression. Recent studies have identified that the urinary microbiome can be a key factor in tumor pathogenesis, progression, and outcomes. This narrative review is designed to summarize current evidence regarding the urobiome and explore its diagnostic and therapeutic potential. Methods: Studies between 2019 and 2024 were identified through the PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar databases. Case reports and non-English-language articles were excluded. Results: The main findings revealed that specif

Microbial Analyses of Subdural Empyema: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Subdural empyema (SDE) is an infection between the dura and arachnoid mater, presenting with symptoms such as fever, headache, altered sensorium, neurological deficits, and seizures. Due to its rapidly progressive nature, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. This paper aims to identify common pathogens, imaging findings, and the necessity of emergent neurosurgical intervention. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with an SDE who underwent craniotomy to evacuate pus and hematoma. Cultures confirmed Streptococcus intermedius, and the patient improved postoperatively with the complet

Urinary biomarkers for immunotherapy response in urothelial carcinoma: current status and future outlook.

INTRODUCTION: Immunotherapy treatments, such as intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and systemic immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for all stages are central to the management of urothelial carcinoma (UC). Biomarkers that are prognostic or predictive and that help in monitoring these therapies are needed to guide and improve efficacy and tolerability. In this review, we evaluated the current landscape of urinary biomarkers for predicting response to immunotherapy (BCG and ICIs) in UC patients and their potential to guide personalized tre

The Effectiveness of Interventions on Improving Knowledge and Glycemic Control Among Antenatal Women Diagnosed With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Regional and Global Literature Review.

This review synthesizes evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to improve knowledge and glycemic control among antenatal women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The findings from 20 eligible studies focus on the prevalence and risk factors of GDM, the effectiveness of nursing interventions for antenatal women with GDM, and innovative approaches and emerging technologies in managing GDM. This review emphasizes the rising global prevalence of GDM, with regional va

Pharmacological and behavioral pain treatment strategies for patients with opioid use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: A critical challenge in providing effective medical care for individuals in opioid agonist treatment (OAT) for opioid use disorder is the effective management of acute and chronic pain. While pain commonly co-occurs with opioid use disorder, there is limited research to guide effective management of pain in this population. AREAS COVERED: We first provide an overview of the etiology and treatment of acute and chronic pain, highlighting areas of complexity for patients receiving OAT. We then describe the search strategy, which involved a date-inclusive search for relevant terms i

Association between benzodiazepines and related drug use and venous thromboembolism risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Benzodiazepines and related drugs (BZDRs) are commonly prescribed for insomnia, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders. However, the association between BZDR use and venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains controversial. This meta-analysis evaluated this association systematically. We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from inception to February 2025 for relevant case-control and cohort studies. Random- or fixed-effect models were used to estimate the overall relative risk. Eight studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the analysis. BZDR exposure was associated

OBJECTIVE: The association of B lymphocytes and B lymphocyte subsets and Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly acknowledged. However, there is inconsistence in the alterations of B lymphocytes or B lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood of PD patients. The Role of Medical Therapies in the Management of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia: A Narrative Review.

Cervical cancer and its precursors (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)) represent a current major public health concern. Currently, the treatment of choice for patients with HSILs (high-grade intraepithelial lesions) is surgical treatment-LEEP or cold-knife conization-except for in pregnant women, where it may have significant future consequences. In this paper, we aim to review the current evidence regarding the efficacy of non-surgical approaches for CINs. Therefore, we searched Google Scholar and PubMed for papers on CIN treatments; 91 studies published in English were included in the

Advancements in research on the anti-aging effects and mechanisms of flavonoids in natural products.

In recent years, with the continuous development of social productivity and improvements in living standards, the issue of population aging has intensified. As the elderly are susceptible to cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and other conditions, the economic and resource burdens associated with treating, caring for, and supporting this demographic rise with their growing numbers, imposing significant pressure on societal development. In light of these challenges, research on natural products possessing anti-aging properties for treating aging-related chronic diseases

Challenges of concurrent HIV infection in the course and management of Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic transmural bowel inflammation with a multifactorial etiology involving genetic predisposition and immune dysregulation in response to environmental triggers. In patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), an already compromised immune system further complicates the progression and management of CD, creating unique therapeutic challenges. Probiotics have recently gained attention as a potential therapeutic option for CD, especially due to their role in modulating the gut microbiota. However, their effectiveness in patients with HIV, especially in enhancin
