Growing appetites: the impact of vegetable-rich school meals on child nutrition, cognition, and well-being.

Typical lunch meals consumed by Dutch children fall short of national dietary guidelines. The average vegetable intake during lunch is around 8 g, contributing to inadequate overall vegetable consumption in over half of children under 12. A school-based lunch programme offering vegetable-rich meals may improve vegetable intake and potentially lead to other benefits. In the current controlled quasi-experimental study, such programme was assessed. Children aged 7-13 years at three primary schools received lunch on 3 school days per week, while three other schools served as controls. Pre- and pos

Potential Harms Associated With Universal School-Based Mental Health Programs for Adolescents: A Scoping Review.

Universal school-based mental health programs for adolescents intend to promote wellbeing, but some evidence suggest that they may also cause harm. This scoping review aimed to map the state of knowledge on potential harms associated with these programs from the recent literature. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines, four databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2024. Articles were included if they evaluated a universal school-based mental health program for adolescents (13

Perceived Parental Comparison, Authenticity and School Adjustment in Adolescence: A Cross-Lagged Panel Network Analysis.

In increasingly competitive educational contexts, parents often evaluate and compare their children's performance, which may shape adolescents' self-related experiences and adjustment. Little is known about how different forms of perceived parental comparison are dynamically associated with adolescents' psychological functioning and school adjustment. Using a cross-lagged panel network approach, this study examined the dynamic associations among perceived parental comparison, authenticity and school adjustment. Four hundred forty-nine adolescents in China (Mage = 15.81 ± 0.61; 51.9% female) pa

A multiperspective study on the role of support and self-efficacy in middle school students using the CTCM method.

The Covid-19 pandemic has reshaped family-school dynamics, emphasizing the crucial role of parental involvement in students' academic outcomes. This study investigates the relationships between parental support, self-efficacy, and goal commitment in middle school students, addressing a gap in early educational research. Grounded in the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, the study examines how support and self-efficacy, assessed from both parent and student perspectives, contribute to goal commitment. Data were collected from 425 parent-student dyads and analyzed using the Correlated-Trait Cor

Community-level wastewater influenza concentrations and school attendance in Jefferson County, Kentucky (2022-2025).

Community-transmitted seasonal infectious diseases pose a significant challenge to school systems across the nation. School attendance is central to student learning progress and is a key public health indicator. We aimed to evaluate the incremental explanatory value of community-level seasonal influenza wastewater concentrations for estimating school absenteeism within the corresponding geographic sewershed in Louisville, Kentucky (USA). We used community wastewater seasonal influenza concentrations from a catchment area that geographically encompassed 51 public elementary, middle, and high s

Sputum Biomarkers of Inflammation to Track Acute Respiratory Events in School-Age Children with Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by neutrophil-driven airway inflammation and acute respiratory events (AREs) that contribute to progressive lung damage. AREs are clinically heterogeneous and often occur without measurable changes in lung function. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of molecular airway inflammatory markers for detecting AREs in school-age children with CF. We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective observational study of children with CF (ages 6.7-16.8 years) followed for two years. Sputum samples were collected from 50 participants during stable visits and

A school-level randomized preliminary study of in-classroom physical activity breaks among fifth graders.

BACKGROUND: In-classroom physical activity breaks (IcPABs) are a pragmatic strategy to reduce sedentary time and promote movement during instructional lessons. However, evidence from primary schools operating within a high-stakes examination-focused education system, where academic achievement in national assessments is prioritized in classroom instruction is limited from low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to examine the preliminary effects and feasibility of a teacher-led, in-classroom physical activity break intervention on school-time movement behaviors, academic performance
