Prevalence of alopecia areata in Japan: Estimates from a nationally representative sample.

Data on the prevalence of alopecia areata (AA) in Japan is limited and the epidemiology of the disease there is not well understood; therefore, it is critical to examine the prevalence and severity of AA in Japan to inform the need for future treatments and research. A cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted in Japan from January through March 2021. A total of 45 006 participants were identified through general population survey panels and asked about their experience with AA and hair loss. The Alopecia Assessment Tool and the Scalp Hair Assessment PROTM were adopted to screen for hist

[Positioning the hand to act-Validation of the 8-point reaching range test].

BACKGROUND: The standardized geriatric assessment of the upper extremities is often limited to measurement of hand strength. The only other instrument mentioned in the S1 guidelines on level 2 geriatric assessment is the 20 cents test (20-C-T); however, in addition to strength and fine motor skills, successful hand placement is a prerequisite for self-care. OBJECTIVE: The 8‑point reaching range test (8P-GRT) was developed for standardized separate testing of sides in a seated person concerning hand positioning relevant to daily living. The purpose of the study was to determine quality criteri

Paravalvular leak prediction after transcatheter aortic valve replacement with self-expandable prosthesis based on quantitative aortic calcification analysis.

BACKGROUND: Paravalvular leak (PVL) is one of the most common complications of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and affects short- and long-term outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify the computed tomography (CT) imaging biomarkers that allow PVL after TAVR to be predicted. METHODS: Patients were included who had severe aortic valve stenosis, had undergone TAVR with a self-expanding valve, and had undergone a pre-procedural CT scan. Data on baseline characteristics, procedural and long-term outcomes were collected retrospectively. We used MATLAB software with a self-deve

Comparative effect of electroacupuncture with different frequency on headache attacks in migraine outpatients: study protocol for a randomised placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Headache attacks severely impaired life quality and increase the economic burden of migraineurs. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been used worldwidely to treat several pain-related diseases including migraines. However, whether EA with low or high frequency exerts a distinct analgesic effect remains unknown and needs further study. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a randomised, single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with three parallel arms. A total of 144 migraine outpatients will be randomly allocated to the 2 Hz EA group, 100 Hz EA group and placebo control group. The duration of th

Discordance between family report and clinical assessment of suicide attempts: a prospective study from the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Developing accurate identification methods for individuals with suicide attempts and providing them with follow-up care and supports can be a vital component of all comprehensive suicide prevention strategies. However, because of the difficulties concerning one's intentions behind injurious behaviour, identifying suicide attempts is a challenge for families and clinicians. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between family report and clinical assessment for suicide attempts in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: A total of 148 patients with suspecte

Monitoring patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis using health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) are at risk for a lower health-related quality of life compared to their healthy peers. Remote monitoring of health-related quality of life using electronic patient-reported outcomes could provide important information to treating physicians. The aim of this study was to investigate if self-assessment with the EuroQol five-dimensional 'youth' questionnaire with five levels (EQ-5D-Y-5 L) inside a mobile E-health application could identify JIA patients in need of possible treatment adjustments. METHODS: The EQ-5D-Y-5 L was

The efficacy in treatment of facial melasma with thulium 1927-nm fractional laser-assisted topical tranexamic acid delivery: a split-face, double-blind, randomized controlled pilot study.

This split-face, double-blind, randomized controlled study examines the efficacy of fractional thulium laser (FTL)-assisted delivery of topical tranexamic acid (TXA) compared with FTL alone as a treatment option for melasma. Forty-six adults with Fitzpatrick skin types III-V and recalcitrant melasma underwent four weekly treatments with fractional 1927-nm thulium laser on both sides of the face. Immediately after treatment, TXA was applied to one side of the face and normal saline solution (NSS) to the contralateral side as control under occlusion. Melanin index (MI), modified MASI (mMASI), an

Music Listening Habits and Music Perception Abilities of Prelingually Deafened Adolescent Cochlear Implant Recipients.

BACKGROUND: Music is a very important art form that can evoke strong emotions and involvement with it can have a considerable impact on cochlear implant (CI) recipients' quality of life. It is well known that music perception is limited in CI with fully electric hearing and CI recipients have significantly poorer music-appraisal ability when compared with normal hearing subjects. Considering the importance of music on the life of an adolescent and negative impact of hearing loss on mental health, understanding and improving music listening habits and perception abilities can have a positive im

"Nightmares-Family Medicine" Course Is an Effective Acute Care Teaching Tool for Family Medicine Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation is an effective method for teaching acute care skills but has not been comprehensively evaluated with family medicine (FM) residents. We developed a comprehensive simulation-based approach for teaching acute care skills to FM residents and assessed it for effectiveness. METHOD: We compared the effectiveness of our standard acute care simulation training [Acute Care Rounds (ACR)] to a more comprehensive simulation-based acute care program, Nightmares-Family Medicine (NM). We used a self-reported comfort scale as well as video-captured performance on an acute care Objec

Impact of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on sleep in chronic low back pain: a real-world retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) improves sleep in chronic low back pain (CLBP). BACKGROUND: There is uncertainty over the effectiveness of TENS in CLBP. In most studies, pain intensity has been the primary outcome measure. Although sleep abnormalities are common in CLBP, sleep outcomes have not been evaluated in most studies of TENS effectiveness. Subjective and objective sleep measures are often inconsistent in CLBP, suggesting that perception of sleep and actual sleep may differ. METHODS: This retrospective cohort

Prospective one-year follow-up of lumbar spinal stenosis in a regional community.

PURPOSE: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a common condition in the aging population. However, limited information exists on discrepancies between LSS symptoms and imaging findings and/or prognostic factors of LSS, as well as the relationship between changes in LSS symptoms and quality of life (QoL) during the natural course of LSS. The purpose of the current study was to clarify any changes in clinically diagnosed LSS at a one-year follow-up, and identify its prognostic factors, using a community-dwelling cohort. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: In this study, the presence of LSS, its associated com

Agreement for depression diagnosis between DSM-IV-TR criteria, three validated scales, oncologist assessment, and psychiatric clinical interview in elderly patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Depression, a major outcome in cancer patients, is often evaluated by physicians relying on their clinical impressions rather than patient self-report. Our aim was to assess agreement between patient self-reported depression, oncologist assessment (OA), and psychiatric clinical interview (PCI) in elderly patients with advanced ovarian cancer (AOC). METHODS: This analysis was a secondary endpoint of the Elderly Women AOC Trial 3 (EWOT3), designed to assess the impact of geriatric covariates, notably depression, on survival in patients older than 70 years of age. Depression was asse
