Physical Activity and Cancer Care-A Review.

In 2020, 19.3 million new cancer cases were diagnosed, and almost 10 million deaths from cancer were recorded. Cancer patients may experience fatigue, depression, anxiety, reduced quality of life and sleep problems. Cancer treatments cause numerous side effects and have a negative impact on all body systems. Physical activity is important for cancer patients. The aim of this review is to analyse recent studies on the role of physical activity in cancer patients and emphasize its importance. The review included 36 papers published in English between 2017 and 2021. The findings from these studie

Association of the Val66Met Polymorphism of the BDNF Gene with the Depression in a Mexican Population with Multiple Sclerosis.

UNLABELLED: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, autoimmune pathology that affects the nervous system. It is characterized by inflammatory lesions that cause axonal damage with neurodegeneration. The signs and symptoms present in this pathology include among others, psychiatric disorders. In MS, depression is the most frequent psychiatric disorder, with prevalence levels of 40 to 60%; to date, the cause is unknown. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin related to neuroplasticity. The single-nucleotide polymorphism Val66Met, encoded by the BDNF gene, has been associate

The Contribution of Spanish Science to Patents: Medicine as Case of Study.

Investments in research and development (R&D) and innovation are expensive, and one wishes to be assured that there is positive feedback and to receive guidance on how to direct investments in the future. The social or economic benefits of investments in R&D are of particular interest to policymakers. In this regard, public expense in research, especially through universities, is sometimes being questioned. This paper establishes a measure of how research in Spain, and specifically in its universities, is involved. In this study, we have analyzed all the literature cited in the period 1998-201

Differential effects of mindfulness treatment and mobile neurofeedback on event-related potentials in early posterior negativity in cancer patients: a clinical-experimental parallel group design.

IntroductionCancer frequently leads to psychological challenges, among them emotion regulation problems. These can be alleviated with the help of mindfulness therapies or neurofeedback (NF) interventions. Possible intervention effects on emotion procession can be detected in clinical EEG studies by exploring event-related potentials, e.g., early posterior negativity (EPN), which recently has been established to investigate emotional processing and represents very early attention to affective stimuli. Therefore, this clinical-experimental study investigated the efficacy of mindfulness and NF (1

Chained Risk Assessment for Life-Long Disease Burden of Early Exposures - Demonstration of Concept Using Prenatal Maternal Smoking.

Traditional risk factors and environmental exposures only explain less than half of the disease burden. The developmental origin of the health and disease (DOHaD) concept proposes that prenatal and early postnatal exposures increase disease susceptibility throughout life. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the application of the DOHaD concept in a chained risk assessment and to provide an estimate of later in life burden of disease related to maternal smoking. We conducted three systematic literature searches for meta-analysis and reviewed the literature reporting meta-analyses of long-ter

Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 315 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (HALE), 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Healthy life expectancy (HALE) and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) provide summary measures of health across geographies and time that can inform assessments of epidemiological patterns and health system performance, help to prioritise investments in research and development, and monitor progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We aimed to provide updated HALE and DALYs for geographies worldwide and evaluate how disease burden changes with development. METHODS: We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 20

Quality of life and symptom burden among hematologic malignancy patients undergoing CAR-T therapy: a cross-sectional study.

Few studies have thoroughly evaluated the symptom burden and quality of life (QOL) among patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies who underwent chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy. In total, 97 eligible patients completed the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy generic scale (FACT-G) at week 4 after CAR-T cell infusion. We used the Common Terminology Criteria Adverse Events (CTCAE) to measure symptom burden of CAR-T patients during the same period. We studied factors associated with QOL using liner regression analysis. During the period of hospitalization after CAR-T t

Characteristics and Outcomes of Patients with Partial Do Not Resuscitate Orders in a Large Community Hospital.

Background Formal writing of do not resuscitate (DNR) orders first appeared in the literature in the late 20th century. Recently, providers have also noticed the presence of partial DNR orders while caring for patients. We sought to determine the effect of these orders on the clinical outcomes of the patients. Methods The study was a retrospective chart review covering a period of approximately 30 months. Patients included in the study were over 18 years of age and had a partial DNR order (i.e., chemical code, do not defibrillate (DND), do not intubate (DNI), intubate only, no cardiopulmonary

Impact of genetic polymorphisms on the response to transdermal fentanyl in cancer patients-a single-center, prospective, biological study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Transdermal fentanyl (TDF) is widely used for moderate-to-severe cancer pain, yet substantial variability in fentanyl exposure, analgesic response, and tolerability remains incompletely explained by clinical factors. We evaluated whether pharmacogenetic variability is associated with pharmacokinetic parameters and clinical outcomes in cancer patients receiving TDF. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center study, adults with solid or hematological malignancies and chronic cancer pain treated with stable-dose 72 h TDF were enrolled. Blood samples were collected for pha

Intestinal Coccidian Infections in Cancer Patients: A Case Series.

Introduction Coccidian protozoa and microsporidian fungi are opportunistic pathogens increasingly implicated in infections in immunosuppressed individuals. These parasites typically infect the intestinal epithelium, resulting in secretory diarrhea and malabsorption. The disease burden and timeline are both greater and longer among immunosuppressed patients. Therapeutic options for immunocompromised individuals are limited. As a result, we wanted to better characterize the disease course and treatment efficacy of these parasitic gastrointestinal infections. Methods We performed a single-center,

Cancer Prevalence in Elderly Patients: Tertiary Care Hospital Experience from Punjab.

ObjectiveGeriatric oncology in India is still in infancy. With the aging population emerging as one of the most significant global demographic shifts, primarily driven by increased life expectancy, increasing incidence of cancer among older adults is concerning. Further age-related comorbidities, treatment intolerance, and toxicities often affect treatment decisions for older cancer patients. Punjab being labeled as cancer capital of India must have dedicated registry for such patients.Materials and methodsOne year retrospective observational study to evaluate the spectrum of malignancies in e
