Evaluation of thyroid function in patients with thyroid hormone autoantibodies.

Serum free thyroxine (FT4) levels were measured in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease who were seropositive for thyroid hormone autoantibodies. The methods used were equilibrium dialysis/radioimmunoassay (FT4 by equilibrium dialysis, Nichols Institute) and FT4 analog radioimmunoassay (Amerlex MFT4) before and after treatment of sera with 12.5% polyethylene glycol (PEG). Furthermore, FT4 measurement in the PEG-treated sera was done using two other analog radioimmunoassays (DPC FT4 Kit and N-FT4 Corning). Serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration before and after i.v. infusion

Anti-bovine thyrotropin autoantibodies in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

We report four cases found to have anti-bovine thyrotropin (bTSH) antibodies, two with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the other two, each with subacute thyroiditis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The unusually high negative titers of anti-TSH receptor antibodies (Case no. 1, -43.1%; Case no. 2, -34.9%; Case no. 3, -55.2%; Case no. 4, -59.9%) led to the incidental finding of the presence of anti-bovine (bTSH) antibodies in each patient. Case no. 1 was diagnosed to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and was treated with L-thyroxine (L-T4). With the treatment, serum free T4 (FT4)normalized with a

The incidence of thyroid carcinoma in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and solitary cold nodules.

The reported incidence of thyroid carcinoma in Hashimoto's thyroiditis varies widely. For this reason the specific subpopulation of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and a solitary cold nodule was analyzed. Between 1972 and 1984 we operated on 146 consecutive patients with solitary cold nodules and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. There were 47 carcinomas, for an incidence of 32%. The mean age of the 146 patients was 43 1/2 years (median 44 years), with 126 females and 20 males. There was a history of prior head and neck radiation exposure in 54 patients, with a 33% incidence of thyroid carcinoma.

Cushing's disease presenting with recurrent abscesses followed by post-remission hyperthyroidism.

SUMMARY: We report a case of a 59-year-old woman with Cushing's disease who developed hyperthyroidism following treatment of hypercortisolaemia. The patient with a history of recurrent hospitalisations caused by multi-sited soft tissue abscesses was admitted with sepsis. Both her medical history and physical examination suggested Cushing's syndrome. The initial hormonal diagnostic process, conducted after sepsis treatment, brought forth conflicting results. However, hormonal assessment repeated 3 months later indicated pituitary hypercortisolaemia, which was confirmed through bilateral inferio

New insights into the comorbid conditions of Turner syndrome: results from a long-term monocentric cohort study.

PURPOSE: Many questions concerning Turner syndrome (TS) remain unresolved, such as the long-term complications and, therefore, the optimal care setting for adults. The primary aim of this long-term cohort study was to estimate the incidence of comorbid conditions along the life course. METHODS: A total of 160 Italian patients with TS diagnosed from 1967 to 2010 were regularly and structurally monitored from the diagnosis to December 2019 at the University Hospital of Bologna using a structured multidisciplinary monitoring protocol. RESULTS: The study cohort was followed up for a median of 27

The correlation of autoantibodies and uNK cells in women with reproductive failure.

There is conflicting evidence on the role of autoimmune disorders in reproductive failure, including recurrent miscarriage (RM) and recurrent implantation failure (RIF), after in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Several commonly studied autoimmune markers in women with reproductive failure include antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPA) and uterine natural killer (uNK) cells. However, there have not been any studies that have examined the correlation of these markers in women with reproductive failure. To determine if women who tested positive for autoantibodies (APA

[Tissue-specific autoimmunity in patients with idiopathic diabetes].

INTRODUCTION: According to the WHO classification, type 1 diabetes is divided into type 1A - autoimmune and type 1B - idiopathic. The pathogenesis of the latter remains unknown. Clinical observations confirm that type 1 diabetes is often associated with the presence of other organ-specific autoantibodies. Besides, the idiopathic type 1 diabetes is suggested as resulted form immune-related beta cell destruction with the defect of humoral response. THE AIM: of the study was to verify the above-mentioned hypothesis by an evaluation of the prevalence of thyroid and coeliac antibodies in children

Antibodies to salivary duct cells, and other autoantibodies, in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and other idiopathic autoimmune diseases.

Sera from thirty patients with Sjögren's syndrome were studied for the presence of antibodies to salivary duct cells. In sixteen cases (53%) a positive result was obtained. The antibodies were present in the IgG globulins, in the IgM globulins also in nearly 50% of the IgG-positive cases, and rarely in the IgA globulins. One-third of the antibodies proved to be complement-fixing. No antibodies were found in normal controls matched for sex and age. An antinuclear factor (ANF) was demonstrated in 77% of the sera. A rheumatoid factor was shown in 48% of the sera using a modified Waaler–Rose test

Association of Bifidobacterium-regulated NIS expression with the CD40-NF-κB pathway in Graves' disease.

INTRODUCTION: Graves' disease (GD) represents a typical autoimmune thyroid disease triggered by thyroid-stimulating autoantibodies. Accumulating studies have verified the close correlation between intestinal microecology and GD progression, with Bifidobacterium prominently implicated, yet the specific molecular mechanisms underlying this association remain elusive. This study aimed to explore the regulatory effects of Bifidobacterium adolescentis on GD development via the CD40-NF-κB signaling cascade and sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) modulation. METHODS: Clinically, fecal specimens from GD pa

A systematic review, meta-analysis, and trial sequential analysis of the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion cake on thyroid function in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is a prevalent autoimmune thyroid disorder that currently lacks a specific treatment. While oral levothyroxine sodium tablets have been found to significantly enhance thyroid function, they do not contribute to a decrease in concentrations of thyroid-related antibodies. We aimed to design a systematic review, meta-analysis, and trial sequential analysis of the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion cake on thyroid function in patients with HT. METHODS: We conducted an unrestricted search up until March 29, 2024, across 7 databases. These included 4 intern

Acceptance of disease as a mediator between social support and quality of life in women with Hashimoto's disease-a pilot study.

Hashimoto's disease is a thyroid disorder characterized by elevated antibody levels and altered gland structure seen on ultrasound. It is a common autoimmune disease, primarily affecting women. The disease has both physical and psychological consequences. Studies indicate an increased risk of mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety disorders. There is very little research in the literature focused on the quality of life of patients with Hashimoto's disease and social support. The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that social support predicts health-related quality

Association between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and melanoma: a retrospective matched cohort study.

An inflammatory microenvironment has been shown to increase risk for malignant melanoma, suggesting that melanoma may be related to a pro-inflammatory state. Though Hashimoto's thyroiditis is one of the most common autoimmune diseases, there are no investigations of its relationship with melanoma. We aim to determine if Hashimoto's increases risk of developing melanoma. A retrospective, validated cohort of patients with a diagnosis of Hashimoto's between 2005 and 2020 were identified using the Olmsted County database. Patients were age and sex matched to controls without a Hashimoto's diagnosi

Pediatric Myxedema Due to Autoimmune Hypothyroidism: A Rare Complication of a Common Disorder.

In children, hypothyroidism usually presents non-specific symptoms; symptoms can emerge gradually, compromising a timely diagnosis. We report the case of a 13-year-old male, who was admitted to the hospital due to swelling of the torso and neck. Besides these symptoms, the child was healthy, except for a significant growth delay. Ultrasound evaluation and blood tests led to the diagnosis of myxedema secondary to severe hypothyroidism, which was due to autoimmune thyroiditis. Further investigations revealed pericardial effusion and pituitary hyperplasia, with hyper-prolactinemia. Treatment with

The making and unmaking of Hashimoto's thyroiditis: On the mismatch between illness and disease. Results from an Italian study.

The diagnostic process in contemporary medical practice is increasingly technical, specialised and relying on population-based ranges of biological normalcy. Disease is defined according to a hierarchy of evidence that privileges specialist knowledge and marginalises subjective experiences of illness. Medical and individual definitions of the situation can conflict in two ways: (i) a diagnosis is made in the absence of symptoms, (ii) individual suffering does not constitute 'real' disease if it is not validated by scientific evidence. This article investigates how the discrepancy between speci

Quality of life and neuropsychiatric disorders in patients with Graves' Orbitopathy: Current concepts.

Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune chronic thyroiditis frequently associated with development of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) characterized by proptosis, strabismus, impairment of visual function, ocular surface inflammation and dry eye. As consequence, patients with GO experience impairment of quality of life and social function and could develop a neurobehavioral syndrome, ranging from anxious to depressive or psychotic disorders. To date, the pathogenic mechanism underlying neuropsychiatric disorders in patients with GD has not been clearly understood. In fact, the development of neuropsychi
