Does TikTok contribute to eating disorders? A comparison of the TikTok algorithms belonging to individuals with eating disorders versus healthy controls.

TikTok employs sophisticated algorithms to deliver users increasingly personalised content over time. We investigated the potential for these algorithms to exacerbate eating disorder symptoms by analysing 1.03 million TikTok videos delivered to 42 individuals with eating disorders (76 % anorexia nervosa) and 49 healthy controls over one month. Within this video corpus, we identified four video categories relevant to eating disorder psychopathology: appearance-oriented videos, dieting videos, exercise videos, and toxic eating disorder (akin to "pro-anorexia") videos. Multi-level models predicte

Clinical and Peripheral Biomarkers in Female Patients Affected by Anorexia: Does the Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) Affect Severity?

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a disabling disorder characterized by extreme weight loss and frequent chronicization, especially in its most severe forms. This condition is associated with a pro-inflammatory state; however, the role of immunity in symptom severity remains unclear. Total cholesterol, white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, iron, folate, vitamin D and B12 were dosed in 84 female AN outpatients. Mildly severe (Body Mass Index-BMI ≥ 17) versus severe (BMI < 17) patients were compared using one-way ANOVAs or χ2 tests. A binary logistic regression model was run to investig

QTc interval prolongation in pediatric eating disorder population.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders in pediatric populations are associated with several cardiac complications, including QTc prolongation, which can lead to fatal arrhythmias. While some studies suggest eating disorders inherently lead to QTc prolongation, emerging evidence suggests extrinsic factors may play a greater role. METHODS: This retrospective chart review evaluates QTc interval prolongation in pediatric patients with eating disorders at a tertiary children's hospital. Demographic factors, ECGs, electrolyte levels, and the use of QTc-prolonging medications were analyzed to evaluate their

Eating Disorder Diagnostic Crossover: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic crossover among eating disorders (EDs) is clinically important, yet rates are inconsistently quantified. This meta-analysis aims to quantify the frequency and direction of diagnostic crossover among EDs (both within-syndrome and between-syndrome), to evaluate study-level moderators of crossover rates, and to conduct a formal appraisal of the quality of the included studies. METHOD: A literature search was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, including all relevant articles on PsycINFO, Pubmed/Medline, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global databases from incep

Association of genetic variation in the leptin-melanocortin system with drive for thinness in patients with eating disorders: A pilot study.

We aimed to investigate whether genetic variants in the leptin-melanocortin system involved in anorexigenic signaling influence personality dimensions and psychopathological symptoms in eating disorders (ED) patients. The population consisted of 309 ED patients [221 with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 88 with bulimia nervosa (BN)] and 396 healthy controls. Patients underwent psychometric assessment using the Eating Disorders Inventory Test-2 (EDI-2) and the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90R) questionnaires. Fourteen tag-SNPs in the LEP, POMC, and MC4R genes, were determined. Drive for thinness

Adverse childhood experiences, low self-esteem, and salient stimulus response in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are elevated in individuals with eating disorders (EDs), but how the neurobiology of EDs and ACEs interact is unclear. METHODS: Women 18-45 years old with anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 38), bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 32), or healthy controls (n = 60) were assessed for ACEs and ED behaviours and performed a taste-conditioning task during brain imaging. Mediation analyses tested relationships between ACE score, self-esteem, and ED behaviours. RESULTS: ACE scores were elevated in EDs and correlated positively with body mass index (p = 0.001), drive for

Momentary physiological indices related to eating disorders: A systematic and methodological review.

Eating disorders (ED) are serious psychiatric illnesses, with no everyday support to intervene on the high rates of relapse. Understanding physiological indices that can be measured by wearable sensor technologies may provide new momentary interventions for individuals with ED. This systematic review, searching large databases, synthesises studies investigating peripheral physiological (PP) indices commonly included in wearable wristbands (heart rate [HR], heart rate variability [HRV], electrodermal activity [EDA], peripheral skin temperature [PST], and acceleration) in ED. Inclusion criteria

Network dynamics of self-compassion, anxiety, and depression during eating disorder therapy.

BACKGROUND: Recovery processes during residential treatment for eating disorders, especially in patients with a history of maltreatment, are insufficiently understood. This study aimed to explore the temporal relationships among comorbid factors, including depression, anxiety, and self-compassion, with the influence of childhood maltreatment. METHOD: Using Dynamic Time Warp (DTW), weekly scores from the Symptom Checklist-5, Eating Disorder Examination, and Self-Compassion Scale were analysed over 12 weeks. The study generated undirected and directed networks to identify influential symptoms i

Irrational Beliefs and Their Role in Specific and Non-Specific Eating Disorder Symptomatology and Cognitive Reappraisal in Eating Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Research on which specific maladaptive cognitions characterize eating disorders (ED) is lacking. This study explores irrational beliefs (IBs) in ED patients and controls and the association between IBs and ED-specific and non-specific ED symptomatology and cognitive reappraisal. METHODS: 79 ED outpatients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or other specified feeding or eating disorders and 95 controls completed the Attitudes and Beliefs Scale-2 (ABS-2) for IBs. ED outpatients also completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) for ED-specific (EDI-3-ED Risk) and non-specif

Emotion Regulation Difficulties During and After Partial Hospitalization Treatment Across Eating Disorders.

Emotion regulation deficits are associated with eating disorder (ED) symptoms, regardless of eating disorder diagnosis. Thus, recent treatment approaches for EDs, such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), have focused on teaching patients skills to better regulate emotions. The present study examined changes in emotion regulation among adult patients with EDs during DBT-oriented partial hospital treatment, and at follow-up (M[SD] = 309.58[144.59] days from discharge). Exploratory analyses examined associations between changes in emotion regulation and ED symptoms. Patients with anorexia nerv

Elevated plasma concentrations of bacterial ClpB protein in patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Caseinolytic protease B (ClpB) produced by Enterobacteria, such as Escherichia coli, has been identified as a conformational mimetic of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), an anorexigenic and anxiogenic neuropeptide. In mice, ClpB induces α-MSH cross-reactive antibodies and activates anorexigenic brain neurons. In patients with eating disorders (ED), anti-ClpB and anti-α-MSH antibodies correlate with psychopathological traits. However, it is not known if ClpB is present in human plasma including ED patients. METHODS: Plasma concentrations of ClpB were measured using a recentl

Determining the relationship between Orthorexia Nervosa risk and body image in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a process that involves social, psychological, and physical changes which may be a turning point for improvement or onset/relapse of eating disorders. Studies conducted have emphasized that, in addition to classical eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), new types (e.g., orthorexia nervosa) and subclinical disorders are also seen in pregnant women. Based on this information, this is a descriptive study that was carried out to determine the relationship between the risk of orthorexia in pregnant women and body image. MATERIAL-METHOD: The study include

To eat or not to eat: A role for ghrelin and LEAP2 in eating disorders?

Ghrelin is an orexigenic hormone that orchestrates many diverse behaviours of relevance for feeding control. It appears to operate as a hunger hormone, organizing food intake into meals and ensuring that we seek out and consume a variety of foods. With this physiological biography, the ghrelin system, including the pathways through which it operates, has been interrogated for its role in the aetiology, pathology and treatment of eating disorders. While common obesity does not appear to be a hyperghrelinemic state, it would be difficult to completely rule out enhanced ghrelin signalling. At the

Exploring the gut-brain Axis: Potential therapeutic impact of Psychobiotics on mental health.

One of the most challenging and controversial issues in microbiome research is related to gut microbial metabolism and neuropsychological disorders. Psychobiotics affect human behavior and central nervous system processes via the gut-brain axis, involving neuronal, immune, and metabolic pathways. They have therapeutic potential in the treatment of several neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders such as depression, anxiety, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, Huntington's disease, anorexia nervosa, and multiple sc
