BACKGROUND: In recent years, the medical community has witnessed a notable increase in high-energy traumatic injuries, leading to a surge in complex fracture patterns that challenge existing treatment methodologies. Among these, the posterior approach to acetabular fractures stands out for offering direct visualization of the retro-acetabular surface, with current fixation methods relying on 3.5 mm low-profile reconstruction plates and various other implants. Despite the effectiveness of these methods, there is a burgeoning demand for a singular, adaptable implant that not only streamlines the

BACKGROUND: The research on the biomechanical characteristics of individual implant placement for pilon fractures based on the different initial direction of fracture displacement is still insufficient. This study's aim is to compare the stress distribution in bones and implants with various pilon fracture types.
METHODS: Varus, valgus, dorsiflexion, and plantarflexion type fractures were categorized as type I, II, III, and IV, respectively. The buttress plate was placed medially in subtypes IA and IIB, whereas it was placed anterolaterally in subtypes IB and IIA; The anterior or posterior bu

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of distal blocking screws on the stability and healing of ulnar diaphyseal fractures treated with intramedullary (IM) nails. The primary research question was whether the addition of distal blocking screws enhanced fracture stabilization and promoted faster healing than the standard IM nailing techniques.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed medical records of 30 patients with ulnar diaphyseal fractures treated from February 2018 to September 2023. The patients were divided into two groups: those treated using IM nails alone (n = 17) and

PURPOSE: Intramedullary (IM) screw fixation of proximal phalanx (P1) fractures is a treatment option increasing in popularity. This study aimed to quantify the articular surface loss after retrograde screw insertion and to determine the range of motion (ROM) of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint while the defect in the P1 head is engaged with the base of the middle phalanx (P2).
METHODS: Twelve fresh frozen cadaver hand specimens were analyzed for prefixation ROM of the PIP joint. A retrograde screw was placed using a percutaneous technique under fluoroscopic guidance. Following screw i

BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation have been described as the gold standard for the treatment of acetabular fractures, but the high complications of these surgeries have led surgeons to seek less invasive procedures. In recent years, minimally invasive treatment, such as fixation through the skin have been proposed. The aim was to assess acetabular fracture outcomes of combination of posterior approach (Kocher-Langenbeck [KL]) with anterior percutaneous screw fixation (APSF) with minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
METHODS: Between February 2017 and July 2019, 155 patients with ac

PURPOSE: With advances in technology and particularly locked screws, patients with high tibial osteotomy (HTO) are frequently allowed full weight bearing for a unilateral procedure. We are aware of no reports comparing the safety of a simultaneous bilateral HTO with staged bilateral HTO. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively compare these two strategies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety patients were treated with bilateral HTO surgery for osteoarthritis from 2009 to 2013; they had opening-wedge HTO and fixed with the same plate fixation and locked screws. A comparison of the outcomes

OBJECTIVE: A new stent-screw-assisted internal fixation (SAIF) minimally invasive cement-augmentation technique has been introduced to treat patients with extreme osteolytic lesions of the vertebral body. The aim of the current finite element study, employing a spine model with an extreme osteolytic defect, was to assess the effect of the SAIF technique in reducing strains in the vertebral body in comparison with a standard surgical short posterior fixation.
METHODS: Different finite element models of a L1-S1 spine were developed, representing an intact condition (reference configuration), an

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic surgery frequently requires the use of metal plate and screw constructs for osteosynthesis. These constructs may be subsequently removed for a variety of indications. In the lower extremity in particular, implants (ie, hardware) can lead to prominence and pain secondary to a thin soft-tissue envelope with little subcutaneous tissue. Often, removal is performed without knowledge of the exact type of screw head configuration and/or size, which can make removal technically challenging. The purpose of this study is to consolidate screw head sizes and configurations from com

A 24-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of gradually increasing pain on eye movements, worse on the right. She had a significant background of undergoing intracranial correction of orbital hypertelorism with internal fixation of the lateral orbital rims at the age of 6 years. Imaging was consistent with bilateral metallic foreign bodies from both lateral orbital rims protruding into the globes. The patient underwent removal of bilateral plates and screws, with a significant improvement of symptoms and ocular motility postoperatively. This case demonstrates the need to consider orbi
