Effects of testicular hemodynamic and echogenicity changes on ram semen characteristics.

This study investigated correlations among ram semen quality parameters, testicular vascularity and echotexture. Measurements were performed biweekly for a year, before (BE) and after ejaculation (AE), on seven Chios breed rams [three rams (group A) and four rams (group B) of 2-6 and 9-13 years old, respectively], considering breeding (1) and non-breeding period (2). Hemodynamics [Pulsatility Index (PI), Resistive Index (RI)] were evaluated in each testis. Images of testicular parenchyma were analysed to evaluate echogenicity [Mean Value (MV), Contrast (Con), Gray Value Distribution (GVD), Run

Effects of temperature on photoperiodically induced reproductive development, circulating plasma luteinizing hormone and thyroid hormones, body mass, fat deposition and molt in mountain white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha.

The mountain white-crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha, breeds in subalpine meadows throughout many mountainous regions of western North America. Mathematical analysis of 20 years of egg-laying dates at Tioga Pass, California (3030m elevation) indicated a highly predictable breeding season suggesting that precise environmental cues such as the annual change in day length were important for regulating reproductive function. Additionally, it appeared that there was sufficient yearly variation in the timing of breeding to suggest that other environmental cues may also be important fo

Fixed-time insemination in peripuberal, lightweight replacement beef heifers after estrus synchronization with PGF2alpha and GnRH.

Estrus synchronization contributes to optimizing the use of time, labor, and financial resources by shortening the calving season, in addition to increasing the uniformity of the calf crop. We determined whether acceptable pregnancy rates could be achieved after synchronization of ovulation and fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) in peripuberal replacement beef heifers using gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and PGF2alpha. Crossbred heifers from two herds (MH, n=239; SS, n=330) were wintered at a single location. After a prebreeding examination revealed that 55 heifers had a reproducti

Trypanosoma congolense: comparative effects of a primary infection on bone marrow progenitor cells from N'Dama and Boran cattle.

Using in vitro clonogenic assays, the changes in haemopoietic progenitor cell levels were compared in the bone marrow of three adult trypanotolerant N'Dama cattle and three age-matched trypanosusceptible Boran cattle over 17 weeks (119 days) of a primary Trypanosoma congolense (clone IL 1180) infection. As the infection progressed, a clear tendency of the parasitaemia to decrease was seen in the N'Damas, while it remained high throughout the infection in the Borans. The decline in the colony-forming units-granulocyte macrophage (CFU-GM) between 7 and 42 days postinfection (dpi) corresponded wi

Dual RNA-Seq Reveals Molecular Interactions Between Alternaria alternata and Cucumis melo During Postharvest Infection.

Alternaria alternata causes major postharvest losses in melons. This dual RNA-seq study analyzed transcriptomic dynamics in both A. alternata strain A2022 and melon during infection. Genomic analysis revealed two conditionally dispensable chromosomes (CDCs) containing host-specific toxin genes, including a T1PKS cluster for βenone biosynthesis. Fungal transcriptomics identified upregulated virulence pathways: MAPK signaling (18 genes), autophagy (17 genes), and lipid metabolism. Melon mounted a biphasic defense: early lignin deposition via phenylpropanoid biosynthesis (15 genes) and late jasmo

TGW1a locus simultaneously shortens growth duration and boosts grain yield in rice.

Reconciling the trade-off between short growth duration and high grain yield is essential for enhancing annual rice yields. We found that qTGW1a, encoding a flowering locus T-like protein, controls heading and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) underpinning grain weight and yield in rice. TGW1a interacts with and stabilizes Ghd7 and Hd1 to boost NUE and grain yield. Natural variations in the promoter enable the ancestral allele TGW1aJZ to maintain an intermediate level of TGW1a transcription. By decoupling its linkage to the weak grain number regulator Gn1aJZ, TGW1aJZ conferred 3.67 to 8.67 days sh

A PCR method to detect the mouse major histocompatibility complex H2-Ld gene that confers resistance to Toxoplasma encephalitis.

In laboratory mice, the H2-Ld gene confers resistance to encephalitis upon infection with Toxoplasma gondii, a foodborne parasite capable of infecting all endotherm animals tested. H2-Ld is carried by inbred strains with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) haplotypes H-2a (e.g., A/J) and H-2d (e.g., BALB/c), but not by those with haplotypes H-2b (e.g., C57BL/6) and H-2k (e.g., C3H/He). As H2-Ld is typically detected by serological typing of ex vivo spleen samples, testing is usually terminal. Here we present a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method to reliably detect the H2-Ld gene in

Review of selected mosquito-borne diseases: arboviruses (dengue, chikungunya, Zika, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever) and parasitic diseases (malaria, lymphatic Filariasis).

Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) are a major global public health concern, accounting for 17% of infectious diseases and causing ~700,000 annual deaths. Transmitted by Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex mosquitoes, they include viral (dengue, Zika, chikungunya), parasitic (malaria, lymphatic filariasis), and zoonotic (Japanese encephalitis) pathogens. This review outlines key MBDs' clinical features, global distribution-concentrated in tropics but expanding due to climate change and urbanization-and transmission dynamics shaped by environmental (temperature, humidity) and ecological (urban breeding sit

Effects of microbiota-testis interactions on the reproductive health of male ruminants: A review.

Ruminants are one of the world's economically important species, and their reproductive health is critical to the economic development of the livestock industry. In recent years, research on the relationship between microbiota and reproductive health has received much attention. Microbiota disruption affects the developmental health of the testes and epididymis, the male reproductive organs of the host, which in turn is related to sperm quality. Maintaining a stable microbiota protects the host from pathogens and increases breeding performance, which in turn promotes the economic development o

Defining Gene Function in Spermatogonial Stem Cells Through Conditional Knockout Approaches.

Mammalian male fertility is maintained throughout life by a population of self-renewing mitotic germ cells known as spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Much of our current understanding regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying SSC activity is derived from studies using conditional knockout mouse models. Here, we provide a guide for the selection and use of mouse strains to develop conditional knockout models for the study of SSCs, as well as their precursors and differentiation-committed progeny. We describe Cre recombinase-expressing strains, breeding strategies to generate experimental gr

Immune responses in the uterine mucosa: clues for vaccine development in pigs.

The immune system in the upper reproductive tract (URT) protects against sexually transmitted pathogens, while at the same time providing immune tolerance responses against allogenic sperm and the developing fetus. The uterine environment is also responsive to hormonal variations during the estrus cycle, although the most likely timing of exposure to pathogens is during estrus and breeding when the cervix is semi-permissive. The goal for intrauterine immunization would be to induce local or systemic immunity and/or to promote colostral/lactogenic immunity that will passively protect suckling o

Techniques to assess reproductive status in adult female American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) using laparoscopic examination.

This protocol describes a minimally invasive surgical technique and approach to successfully examine the gonads of live female American alligators as part of a reproductive examination used in conservation medicine and biology. Best practices are based on examination of over 80 American alligators in the last two years adapting principles derived from other reptilian megafauna species. This protocol is designed for appropriately qualified veterinarians and biologists working in the field. We show likely reproductive tract presentations with respect to breeding status and environmental cues to

Ionophores.

Ionophores are a class of polyether antibiotics that are commonly used as anticoccidial agents and growth promotants in ruminant diets. Ionophores transport ions across lipid membranes and down concentration gradients, which results in mitochondrial destruction, reduced cellular energy production, and ultimately cell death. Cardiomyocytes are the primary target in equine patients when exposed to toxic concentrations and the clinical disease syndrome is related to myocardial damage. Animals can survive acute exposures but can have permanent heart damage that may result in acute death at future

Novel Rickettsia spp. in two common overwintering North American songbirds.

American robins and dark-eyed juncos migrate across North America and have been found to be competent hosts for some bacterial and viral pathogens, but their contributions to arthropod-borne diseases more broadly remain poorly characterized. Here, we sampled robins and juncos in multiple sites across North America for arthropod-borne bacterial pathogens of public health significance. We identified two novel Rickettsia spp. in one wintering migrant per bird species related to bellii, transitional, and spotted rickettsiae fever groups. Stable isotope analyses of feathers suggested spring migrati

Comprehensive Surveillance of Virus Infection among Captive African Pygmy Hedgehogs in Japan.

African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) are popular exotic pets in Japan, and their breeding numbers have recently increased. Although various diseases have been reported in hedgehogs, including skin, respiratory, neurological, and neoplastic diseases, most of the causes remain unidentified. In this study, we investigated herpesvirus, adenovirus, and coronavirus infections among 150 African pygmy hedgehogs in Japan and evaluated the correlations between virus infection and diseases. A novel herpesvirus named Atelerix albiventris herpesvirus 1 (AAHeV), and African pygmy hedgehog adenovir

Salicylic Acid Steers the Growth-Immunity Tradeoff.

Plants possess an effective immune system to combat most microbial attackers. The activation of immune responses to biotrophic pathogens requires the hormone salicylic acid (SA). Accumulation of SA triggers a plethora of immune responses (like massive transcriptional reprogramming, cell wall strengthening, and production of secondary metabolites and antimicrobial proteins). A tradeoff of strong immune responses is the active suppression of plant growth and development. The tradeoff also works the opposite way, where active growth and developmental processes suppress SA production and immune re

The oligomeric assembly of galectin-11 is critical for anti-parasitic activity in sheep (Ovis aries).

Galectins are a family of glycan-binding molecules with a characteristic affinity for ß-D-glycosides that mediate a variety of important cellular functions, including immune and inflammatory responses. Galectin-11 (LGALS-11) has been recently identified as a mediator induced specifically in animals against gastrointestinal nematodes and can interfere with parasite growth and development. Here, we report that at least two natural genetic variants of LGALS-11 exist in sheep, and demonstrate fundamental differences in anti-parasitic activity, correlated with their ability to dimerise. Enhanced Zika virus susceptibility of globally invasive Aedes aegypti populations.

The drivers and patterns of zoonotic virus emergence in the human population are poorly understood. The mosquito Aedes aegypti is a major arbovirus vector native to Africa that invaded most of the world's tropical belt over the past four centuries, after the evolution of a "domestic" form that specialized in biting humans and breeding in water storage containers. Here, we show that human specialization and subsequent spread of A. aegypti out of Africa were accompanied by an increase in its intrinsic ability to acquire and transmit the emerging human pathogen Zika virus. Thus, the recent evolut

SARCOCYSTIS NEURONA-ASSOCIATED MENINGOENCEPHALITIS IN A PACIFIC WALRUS ( ODOBENDUS ROSMARUS DIVERGENS).

A 21-yr-old intact male walrus ( Odobendus rosmarus divergens) presented with acute onset of shifting lameness, initially associated with breeding behaviors. Further clinical signs manifested, including muscle tremors, anorexia, hematuria, and coughing. Diagnostics were limited, as the animal would not offer behaviors for voluntary sample collection. Signs were addressed with anti-inflammatories, anticonvulsants, and antibiotics. The walrus developed cluster seizures and ultimately, respiratory and cardiac arrest. Provitamin A biofortification of crop plants: a gold rush with many miners.

Carotenoids are synthesized de novo by plants, where they play fundamental physiological roles as photosynthetic pigments and precursors for signaling molecules. They are also essential components of a healthy diet, as dietary antioxidants and vitamin A precursors. Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in developing countries, which has prompted a series of efforts toward the biofortification of plant-derived foods with provitamin A carotenoids (mainly β-carotene), giving rise to 'golden' crops. Since the 'golden rice' exploit, a number of biofortified crops have been generated, usin
