INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Liver transplantation candidates are among the most comorbid patients awaiting lifesaving intervention. Health related quality of life (HRQOL) measured by instruments that incorporate dynamic computerized adaptive testing, could improve their assessment. We aimed to determine the feasibility of administration of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-CAT) in liver transplant candidates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Liver transplantation candidates were prospectively enrolled following a review of their available medical history. Subjects we

PURPOSE: Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease which results in several progressive symptoms, including bulbar dysfunction (i.e., speech and swallowing difficulties). Although difficulties in speech and swallowing in HD have a negative impact on health-related quality of life, no patient-reported outcome measure exists to capture these difficulties that are specific to HD. Thus, we developed a new patient-reported outcome measure for use in the Huntington Disease Health-Related Quality of Life (HDQLIFE) Measurement System that focused on the impact that dif

ΔNp63 is an isoform of p63 that plays an essential role in the development and growth of some epithelial tissues. In this study, we investigated the expression of ΔNp63 in normal and neoplastic tissues of cats and compared the results with the expression of pan-p63. Immunohistochemistry for ΔNp63 and pan-p63 was performed in normal tissues from 2 adult cats and in 10 cases each of 22 different types of feline neoplasms. In normal tissues, there was nuclear ΔNp63 immunolabeling in basal cells of stratified squamous, transitional, and pseudostratified columnar epithelia; basal cells of sebaceous

Feline stool-associated circular DNA virus (FeSCV), was identified in Japan (2018) and China (2021) but has not yet been detected outside Asia. In this study, 137 fecal or rectal swab samples from 83 cats were screened for circoviruses and FeSCV, with detection of two putative novel Cyclovirus species and 19.3% (16/83) of FeSCV. A higher incidence of FeSCV in kittens and young adults, and FCoV-positive cats with clinical signs of feline infectious peritonitis were observed. Further investigation will clarify the virus pathogenicity and its association with other pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Congenital malformations in domestic cats are traditionally considered uncommon; however, recent evidence suggests they may represent an underrecognized cause of neonatal mortality. Most reported anomalies occur as isolated defects in individual animals, while the occurrence of multiple severe malformations within the same fetus or affecting an entire litter appears to be rare. Exposure to exogenous substances during critical windows of embryonic development has been proposed as a potential contributing factor. Reports describing congenital abnormalities in feline fetuses following

A 3-month-old intact male domestic shorthair kitten was evaluated for progressive, recurrent pericardial effusion. Computed tomography (CT) showed marked pericardial effusion with diffuse pericardial thickening and an apparent incomplete pericardial closure. Portions of the left medial and quadrate liver lobes and the gallbladder protruded cranially into the pericardial space and were encased by a thick, contrast-enhancing fibrous layer. These findings were initially interpreted as atypical peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH). Due to acute clinical deterioration, the kitten was eu

OBJECTIVES: Total thyroxine (TT4) evaluation is the most commonly used first-line test for the diagnosis and monitoring of cats with hyperthyroidism. Vcheck T4 is a point-of-care immunoassay that measures TT4 using a Vcheck V200 analyser. This study aimed to evaluate the analytic performance of the Vcheck T4 assay in feline sera and the agreement in the classification of normal, high and low TT4 concentrations of Vcheck T4 with those measured by an enzyme immunoassay (EIA).
METHODS: Assay precision, reproducibility and linearity were evaluated for the Vcheck T4. For method comparison, TT4 con

This study was conducted to identify the molecular and biological characteristics of the collected feline coronavirus (FCoV) strains in northern Vietnam. A total of 166 fecal samples were collected from domestic cats in Hanoi, Bacgiang, Hungyen, and Hanam in northern Vietnam. Conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the FCoV genome in the field samples. Results indicated that 19 (11.45%) out of 166 fecal samples were positive for the FCoV genome using PCR. Insignificant differences in positive rates were detected according to breed, age, sex, and health status of the cat

Case series summary The aim of this study was to describe the clinical findings, diagnostic results and response to both non-surgical and surgical therapy in cats with medial humeral epicondylitis (MHE). The medical records of one institution were searched for cats with a radiographically confirmed diagnosis of MHE where non-surgical therapy alone or both non-surgical and surgical therapy had been trialed. Nine cats (17 elbows) were included. None of the cats had a history of outdoor access. Orthopedic examination revealed pain upon palpation over the medial epicondyle (n = 15), elbow pronatio

This report describes the case of a 5-year-old spayed female munchkin cat that was presented with respiratory distress. Thoracic radiography revealed pleural effusion with a diffuse interstitial lung pattern. Echocardiography identified a mass compressing the left atrium, accompanied by a turbulent jet-like flow from the pulmonary veins, with a velocity of 1.6 m/s. Computed tomography revealed a diffuse, homogenous mediastinal mass compressing the dorsal border of the left atrium and surrounding the ascending aorta and the pulmonary arteries and veins. The distal caudal pulmonary veins were di

Feline meningiomas typically arise on the surface of the brain but can occur in the third ventricle. Meningiomas in the fourth ventricle have not been reported in cats, to our knowledge. Here, we describe the clinical and pathologic findings of meningioma in the fourth ventricle in 2 cats. Both affected patients (1 castrated male, 1 spayed female) were 15-y-old. Case 2 had neurologic signs, including absent menace response, head tilt, and ataxia. Grossly, both tumors were well-demarcated and firm, expanded the fourth ventricle, and compressed the adjacent neuroparenchyma. Cytology of the ventr

Hepatozoon felis is a protozoan parasite reported in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas with infection rates ranging from 4 % to 30 % in domestic cats in Mediterranean countries. Although the parasite was described in 1908, its arthropod vector has not been reported to date. Ticks removed from cats were dissected to prepare hemocoel smears with the aim of identifying the sporogonic life stages of H. felis. Light and live video microscopy were used to visualize these stages and PCR followed by DNA sequencing served to verify the Hepatozoon sp. found and to morphologically and molecularly def

OBJECTIVE: To describe abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) associated with postobstructive diuresis (POD) in a cat with urethral rupture.
CASE SUMMARY: A 6-month-old intact male Korean domestic shorthaired cat presented with suspected urethral rupture. Diagnostic imaging revealed multiple pelvic fractures and free fluid in the abdominal cavity, suggesting a uroabdomen secondary to traumatic urethral rupture. No evidence of urethral obstruction was observed, and the urinary bladder was empty. Uroabdomen and septic peritonitis were confirmed via abdominal fluid-to-serum creatinine and potassiu
