The application of in utero magnetic resonance imaging in the study of the metabolic and cardiovascular consequences of the developmental origins of health and disease.

Observing fetal development in utero is vital to further the understanding of later-life diseases. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a tool for obtaining a wealth of information about fetal growth, development, and programming not previously available using other methods. This review provides an overview of MRI techniques used to investigate the metabolic and cardiovascular consequences of the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) hypothesis. These methods add to the understanding of the developing fetus by examining fetal growth and organ development, adipose tissue and bo

Charting shared developmental trajectories of cortical thickness and structural connectivity in childhood and adolescence.

The cortex is organised into broadly hierarchical functional systems with distinct neuroanatomical characteristics reflected by macroscopic measures of cortical morphology. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging allows the delineation of areal connectivity, changes to which reflect the ongoing maturation of white matter tracts. These developmental processes are intrinsically linked with timing coincident with the development of cognitive function. In this study, we use a data-driven multivariate approach, nonnegative matrix factorisation, to define cortical regions that co-vary together

Interventional recanalization as a treatment of carotid stump syndrome caused by right internal carotid artery occlusion: A case report.

RATIONALE: Carotid stump syndrome is a cerebral infarction caused by an embolus formed subsequent to the vortex of blood flow from the occluded stump, which then moves through the collateral vessels into the brain. The covered stent and stent-assisted coil embolization stump are the effective interventions for the carotid artery stump. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 71-year-old man twice experienced left limb weakness; diffusion weighted imaging confirmed the diagnosis of cerebral infarction. Cervical computed tomography angiography, intracranial magnetic resonance angiography, and digital subtraction a

An MRI Study of the Metabolic and Structural Abnormalities in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric illness characterized by obsessions and/or compulsions. Its pathophysiology is still not well understood but it is known that the cortico-striatal-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuitry plays an important role. Here, we used a multi-method MRI approach combining proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H1-MRS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques to investigate both the metabolic and the microstructural white matter (WM) changes of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in OCD patients as compared to healthy controls. Twenty-three OCD

The central nervous system phenotype of X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a transient disorder of children and young adults.

We describe 2 patients with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, type 1 (CMTX1) disease and central nervous system manifestations and review 19 cases from the literature. Our first case had not been previously diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and the second case, although known to have Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, was suspected of having CMTX1 after presentation with central nervous system manifestations. The most common central nervous system manifestations were transient and included dysarthria, ataxia, hemiparesis, and tetraparesis resembling periodic paralysis. Of the 21 patien

Isolated rotational nystagmus may be the only clue to the early diagnosis of dorsolateral medullary infarction.

The medulla contains complex nervous structures related to motor, sensory, coordination, and visceral autonomic functions. The medullary infarctions cause various symptoms and signs depending on the location of the lesion. Lateral medullary infarction is caused by a vascular event in the territory of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery or the vertebral artery. We report a case of a patient with falling tendency and whirling sensation. He reported no facial drop, arm drift, slurred speech, difficulty of swallowing, or weakness of his limbs. The neurologic examination revealed no decreased

Altered fronto-striato-thalamic connectivity in children with Tourette syndrome assessed with diffusion tensor MRI and probabilistic fiber tracking.

The aim of the study was to determine whether abnormal connectivity of the fronto-striato-thalamic circuit underlies the morphological changes in subcortical structures of patients with Tourette syndrome and to correlate these changes with neurobehavioral measures. A total of 18 children with Tourette syndrome and 12 age-matched healthy controls underwent diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging. Tractography of the fronto-striato-thalamic circuit was achieved using probability distribution function of individual voxels. The Tourette syndrome group had significantly lower probability of con

Study of non-covalent interactions between MRI contrast agents and human serum albumin by NMR diffusometry.

The NMR diffusometry technique, based on the measurement of the diffusion coefficient of a ligand in the absence and in the presence of its macromolecular partner, was used to study the affinity for human serum albumin (HSA) of four gadolinium complexes, potential or already used magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. Diamagnetic lanthanum(III) ion or europium(III) ion, which has the advantage of shifting the NMR signals far away from those of the macromolecule, was used to avoid the excessive broadening of the NMR signals induced by the gadolinium(III) ion. Titration experiments, in whic

Posterior circulation hyperperfusion syndrome after bilateral vertebral artery intracranial stenting.

Hyperperfusion syndrome is a well-documented clinical complication after endarterectomy and carotid stenting. However, little is known about this complication immediately after vertebral artery stenting. A 51-year-old woman who had repeated episodes of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting was diagnosed with vertebrobasilar insufficiency. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion in the posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory. The patient underwent bilateral vertebral stenting due to severe stenosis in both intracranial segments of the vertebral arteries. Three hours after

Subacute presentation of propionic acidemia.

Propionic acidemia is a hereditary metabolic disease caused by a deficiency of enzyme propionyl-CoA carboxylase, which is involved in the catabolism of ramified amino acids, odd-chain fatty acids, and other metabolites; the deficiency of this enzyme leads to an accumulation of toxic substances in the body. There are various forms of clinical presentation (severe neonatal, chronic intermittent, or slow and gradual). The case presented in this study was of a slow and insidious evolution form that was diagnosed when the child was 9 months old. Intracranial magnetic resonance imaging showed a slig

[Transient global amnesia (TGA) during an oral provocation test].

After the oral administration of the COX 2 inhibitor rofecoxib (Vioxx) as part of an oral provocation test, a 64-year-old woman developed acute anterograde and retrograde amnesia which lasted for several hours. The patient did not show symptoms of anaphylaxis. Neurological examination did not reveal focal symptoms or an epileptic seizure. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging only showed a small region of increased signal intensity in the left hippocampus. The patient thus had no anaphylactic drug reaction, but a transient global amnesia (TGA) or amnestic episode. TGA is an acute, reve

Pineal dermoid cyst developing 18 years after gross total removal of a pineal mature teratoma.

A 21-year-old male presented with a pineal dermoid cyst manifesting as headache and diplopia. He had undergone gross total removal of a pineal mature teratoma 18 years before and had done well until recently. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed a region of high signal intensity due to a round mass in the pineal region and extending into the trigone of the right lateral ventricle. Subtotal excision of the tumor was achieved. Histological examination showed an epidermoid cyst consisting of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and connective tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging of the submandibular-sublingual complex.

The submandibular-sublingual complex (SSC) was studied in vivo by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 4.7 and 7.05 Tesla in rat and mouse. A correlation was found between histology and MRI signal. The mainly mucous sublingual gland emitted a more intense signal than the mainly serous submandibular gland. Ventral to the glands, cutis, subcutaneous adipose tissue and two planes of muscular tissue separated by connective laminae were visible in vivo. Autopsy and histology confirmed the in vivo description provided by MRI. The reactivity of the salivary system after pharmacological stimulation was

Magnetic Resonance Elastography in the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) present a major health burden to society. Changes in brain structure and cognition are generally only observed at the late stage of the disease. Although advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques such as diffusion imaging may allow identification of biomarkers at earlier stages of neurodegeneration, early diagnosis is still challenging. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a noninvasive MRI technique for studying the mechanical properties of tissues by measuring the wave propagation induced

Establishing criteria for pediatric epilepsy surgery center levels of care: Report from the ILAE Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Task Force.

Presurgical evaluation and surgery in the pediatric age group are unique in challenges related to caring for the very young, range of etiologies, choice of appropriate investigations, and surgical procedures. Accepted standards that define the criteria for levels of presurgical evaluation and epilepsy surgery care do not exist. Through a modified Delphi process involving 61 centers with experience in pediatric epilepsy surgery across 20 countries, including low-middle- to high-income countries, we established consensus for two levels of care. Levels were based on age, etiology, complexity of p
