Understanding the impact of different hand drying methods on viral aerosols formation and surface contamination in indoor environments.

BACKGROUND: As COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, compliance with good hygiene practices has declined. Hand drying can help remove microbes that remain on hands following poor hand washing. We looked at the potential of new electric hand dryer models to disperse microbial droplets and aerosolized particles during hand drying, to understand if there is a potential infection risk. METHODS: We used both a food dye solution and a bacteriophage solution to visually and quantitively investigate the potential of electric hand dryers Airblade 9KJ (A9KJ), Airblade Wash & Dry (AW+D) and of paper towels

Victimization in the Grain Tower: A Study of the Effect of Community Perceptions on Victimization Risk and Perceived Wellness in a Rural Environment.

Social science research has studied the role of neighborhood order in explaining perceptions of crime and official crime statistics for decades. When citizens perceive their neighborhood to be socially and/or physically disordered, community and interpersonal relationships diminish, mistrust increases, including negative perceptions of police legitimacy, and overall individual wellness decreases. However, little is known about these interactions within a college population-neighborhoods referred to as "studentification" and described as "student ghettos." Using an online survey distributed to

Investigation of binary blended cement mortar degradation driven by sulfate attack and thermal gradients in arid environments.

In hot climates, concrete deteriorates faster due to high temperatures, moisture changes, and chemical attack. This study examines the effects of thermal diffusion and related environmental stressors on the progression of sulfate attack in mortar. Prismatic mortar specimen and cubes were fabricated using ordinary Portland cement as well as blends incorporating silica fume and ground granulated blast furnace slag. These samples were exposed to 10% w/v Na2SO4 and MgSO4, solutions for up to 120 days. Mortar samples were subjected to sulfate attack under varying thermal and moisture regimes, inclu

Medical-Legal Liability and Indoor Air Pollution in Non-Industrial Environments and Perspectives for Maternal and Child Health.

Indoor air pollution (IAP) has emerged as a critical yet underrecognized threat to public health, particularly in non-industrial environments such as homes, schools, and healthcare facilities. As individuals spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, exposure to indoor pollutants-such as particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and microbial contaminants-can lead to significant health risks. These risks disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions. The e

Impact of Minerals (Ferrihydrite and Goethite) and Their Organo-Mineral Complexes on Fate and Transport of Nanoplastics in the Riverine and Terrestrial Environments.

Abundantly occurring minerals are detrimental in dictating nanoplastics (NPs) fate and transport in the environment. However, in natural scenarios, minerals barely exist in their pure phases. Minerals are often associated with organic matter and form organo-mineral complexes (OMCs), exhibiting different reactivity than their pure mineral phase. In this study, we investigated the impact of ferrihydrite, its weathering-originated secondary mineral goethite, and their corresponding OMCs, i.e., organo-ferrihydrite (O-Fh) and organo-goethite (O-Goe) on NPs mobility under varying environmental condi

Twisting tetraplex DNA: A strand dynamics regulating i-motif function in diverse molecular crowding environments.

Intercalated motif (i-motif) tetraplex DNA plays a crucial role in gene expression and diseases. However, due to the limited number of i-motif binding proteins in human cells, the chemical mechanisms regulating i-motifs within cell remain currently unknown. Thus, molecular environment should have a main factor to control i-motif formation and functions in cells. Here, we systematically investigated the stability and functions of i-motif DNAs by using various polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) that mimicked diverse cellular crowding environments. We found that the huma

Deciphering key traits and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes and degradation genes in pharmaceutical wastewater receiving environments.

Discharge of pharmaceutical wastewater significantly affects the receiving environments. However, the development of antibiotic resistance and microbial enzymatic degradation in wastewater-receiving soils and rivers remains unclear. This study investigated a sulfonamide-producing factory to explore the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the receiving river and soil environments (0-100 cm depth), and the potential hosts of sadABC genes (sulfonamide-degrading genes) as well as their phylogenetic characterization. We identified plentiful ARGs (28 types and 1065 subtypes) and th

Impact of Interactions Between Zn(II) and Selenites in an Aquatic Environment on the Accumulation of Se and Zn in a Fungal Cell.

Our attempts to obtain a new mushroom-derived immunostimulatory preparation containing organically bound selenium and zinc have focused on the interactions between selenites and zinc(II) in liquid culture media and their effects on transport into the mushroom cell. Previously, we found that, even if Zn2+ and SeO32- concentrations in the liquid medium are not high enough to precipitate ZnSeO3, the accumulation of selenium in the presence of zinc, and zinc in the presence of selenites, significantly dropped. This effect was more dependent on the molar ratio of ions in the medium than on the conc
