Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection caused by filamentous fungi of the Mucoraceae family. The genera most commonly responsible are Mucor or Rhizopus. The disease occurs mostly in association with diabetic ketoacidosis. Mucormycosis has an extremely high death rate even when aggressive surgery is done. Death rates range from 25-85% depending on the body area involved. A case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a 65-year-old diabetic male patient typically presenting as headache, especially in parietal and frontal lobes, with nose and left eye discharge. After clinical and laboratory exami

Fusokines are proteins formed by the fusion of two cytokines. They have greater bioavailability and therapeutic potential than individual cytokines or a combination of different cytokines. Interferon-gamma-inducible protein 10 (CXCL10) and lymphotactin (XCL1) are members of the chemotactic family of cytokines, which induce tumor regression by eliciting immune-system cell chemotaxis. We engineered a replication-deficient adenoviral system expressing CXCL10/XCL1 fusokine (Ad FIL) and assessed its chemotactic response in vitro and in vivo. The CXCL10/XCL1 fusokine elicited a greater chemotactic e

Each year, 50,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in France and 11,000 women die from it. After a sharp increase, partly explained by the screening program implementation, the incidence rate has decreased for few years. Since the 2000s, the mortality rate has been declining steadily. Many risk factors for breast cancer are known or suspected. Endogenous hormonal factors (age at menarche, menopause, first pregnancy, lactation, number of children) and exogenous (hormone replacement therapy, contraception...) are known risk factors. The lifestyle (weight, diet, physical activity, night w

Patients with inflammatory arthritis and eligible for immunosuppressive therapy account for more than 1% of general population, and represents a significant workload on family doctors. They are prone to other comorbidities, with an increased cardiovascular risk and a higher incidence of infections than the general population, especially skin infections and pneumonitis. This comorbidity can be considered vulnerable to a prevention program-prevention of cardiovascular risk, cancer screening, vaccination schedule for adults. As for prevention through vaccination, importance should be given to pne

Leishmania donovani, an obligate intracellular parasite of genus Leishmania causes visceral leishmaniasis that affects millions of people worldwide, especially in the Indian subcontinent and East Africa. Generic pentavalent antimonials have been the mainstay for therapy in the endemic regions due to efficacy and cost effectiveness but the growing incidence of their resistance has seriously hampered their use. This study discloses strong in vitro antileishmanial activity of 2-methyl-5 -(3'-methyl-but-2'-enyloxy)-[1,4]naphthoquinone (1), a prenyloxy-naphthoquinone isolated and characterised from

The bisphosphonate (BP) family of drugs has been used as a vital component in cancer therapy and many other diseases. One of the main adverse effects related to (BP) is BP-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Although this condition was first recognized in 2003, the pathophysiologic mechanism remains undefined. Our hypothesis is that ONJs clinical course and delayed wound healing is in part correlated to a localized non-traditional calciphylaxis. This effect is identified by the evidence of calcium deposition in the connective tissue and around small blood vessels in the soft tissues imm

Hypnosis has been used in the treatment of bulimia nervosa from the early 1980s. Dissociation theory identified a certain subgroup of eating disordered patients with dissociative signs and symptoms. These patients react well to hypnotherapy. Simultaneous hypnosis ("tandem hypnosis") in the treatment of two female 19-year-old monozygotic twins led to a very successful outcome after 6 sessions. During the therapy, attempts were made to work through the physical abuse the subjects suffered from their father. Hypnobehavioural methods were used and treatment was combined with five individual sessio

Hypokalemia is a common finding. The clinical presentation can be paralyses and cardiac arrhythmias. We present a normotensive young woman with salt appetite, cramps and palpitations. In our case report the patient shows a positive family history for hypopotassemia, a metabolic alkalosis with hypotension, and hypocalciuria with an increased urinary potassium loss. The levels of renin and aldosterone were elevated. After a negative testing for metabolites of diuretics, we obtained a positive result of the suspected SLC12A3 genetic test. This mutation leads to a failure of the thiazide-sensitive

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are the treatment of choice for patients at risk for potentially life threatening arrhythmias. The associated stress of living with an implanted device and receiving ICD shock therapy has been noted to exert a psychological toll on the individual patient and family. Anxious and depressive symptomatology is frequently reported by these patients, thus creating a demand for tailored psychological interventions for this population. The current case report describes the components, delivery, and effectiveness of a targeted treatment approach for anxiet

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the data of 61 cases with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF). The purpose was to understand the feature of the disease in order to improve its diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: The clinical data of 61 cases discharged from our hospital were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: IRF was seen in male higher than in female (3.7:1), the mean age was 55.7 years. One case was complicated with polymyositis, two cases had family history. Back pain and abdominal pain were most commonly onset symptoms. 34 patients were treated with surgery, 10 patients treated with corticost

Selective IgA deficiency (IgAD) is the most common primary immunodeficiency in Caucasians. Although it is often asymptomatic, selected patients show an increased frequency of infections, allergies and autoimmune manifestations. Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary antibody deficiency disease that shares many clinical features with IgAD. A common genetic basis for IgAD and CVID has been suggested based on their occurrence in members of the same family and the similarity of the underlying B cell defects. Progression from IgAD to CVID has also been reported in several cases. Here

Darier's disease is a rare disorder of keratinization of the epidermis, nails, and mucous membranes. Patients usually present with pruritus and pain along with multiple small, red-brown papules on the seborrheic areas. Other cutaneous signs include punctate keratotic pits of the palms and soles and dystrophy of the nails. Darier's disease is the result of a mutation in the ATP2A2 gene. A case which was difficult to diagnose because its presentation resembled more commonly seen skin conditions is reported. The patient was misdiagnosed with acne, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis, and was treate

Anderson-Fabry disease in an inherited X-linked metabolic disorder involving glycosphingolipid metabolism. Few data are available regarding cochlear involvement. Clinical manifestations of Fabry disease appeared on the first decade of life. The prognosis of males with Fabry disease is serious and life expectancy is limited; clinical evolution of heterozygous females is clearly better. We report a family with Fabry disease in several members. The mother, already dead, had two child which have been examined in our department; the male, without a risk of ototoxicity, or acoustic trauma, has progr

OBJECTIVE: Status epilepticus is a life-threatening medical condition. In its most severe form, refractory status epilepticus (RSE) seizures may not respond to first and second-line anti-epileptic drugs. RSE is associated with a high mortality and significant medical complications in survivors with prolonged hospitalizations.
METHODS: We describe the clinical course of RSE in the setting of new onset lupus in a 31-year-old male who required prolonged barbiturate coma.
RESULTS: Seizure stopped on day 64 of treatment. Prior to the resolution of seizures, discussion around withdrawal of care to

Dupuytren's disease is a progressive fibroproliferative disorder of an unknown origin affecting the hands causing permanent flexion contracture of the digits. Significant risk factors for development of Dupuytren's disease include old age, male sex, white northern European extraction, presence of positive family history of Dupuytren's disease, and diabetes mellitus. The disease also seems to deteriorate rapidly in those cases showing young age of onset and additional fibromatosis affecting the back of the hands, soles of the feet and the penis. Although there is no cure, patients with Dupuytre

In rheumatic diseases there can appear deteriorations of the thrombocytes number in the sense of increase or decrease of this number.Thrombocytosis has 3 major causes: (1) reactive or secondary thrombocytosis; (2) family thrombocytosis and (3) clonal thrombocytosis. Thrombocytopenia, that is, decrease of the thrombocytes number below 150000/mmc is unusually in rheumatic diseases. Their mechanism of production can be central and peripheral. In the connective tissue disorders and vasculitis thrombocytopenia can has different causes: (1) decrease thrombocytes production; (2) splenic platelets seq

Parent views of specific language impairment have received little attention in the literature, even though speech and language development is the single greatest area of concern for parents. This article examines parental views of events up to, and including, language unit admission for their children. A series of qualitative interviews was conducted with parents. Parents felt that, apart from speech and language difficulties, the children were developing normally. They placed a low value on speech and language therapy, and saw language unit admission as the only intervention that 'worked'. In

Immigration from developing countries to Europe has greatly increased during the last few years. Very little information is available on children who immigrated with their biological family, thus this paper deals only with children immigrating by adoption. In recent years some studies have shown an increased incidence of precocious puberty among adopted children, but information on this issue is scanty. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain precocious puberty in adopted children, including nutritional, ethnic and/or emotional factors. Untreated precocious puberty is associated wi

Pterygium is a lesion of the corneoscleral limbus which tends to grow in size, often recurs after surgical excision and is associated with exposure to solar light. Additionally, a family history is frequently reported. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH), increased P53 expression and the presence of oncogenic viruses, such as human papilloma virus (HPV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV), have been detected in pterygia, supporting the possible neoplastic nature of the lesion. Co-infection by HSV and HPV as well as LOH at some loci have also been correlated with clinical features, such as postoperative re
