Using technology to provide individualized respite for caregivers in rural communities.

INTRODUCTION: Caregiving for older adults-by family and friends-is an essential component of the U.S. health and long-term care systems. Though often rewarding, caregiving is associated with higher rates of poor health. Respite is valued by caregivers and associated with positive outcomes; however, access is limited. Exhale-The Family Caregiver Initiative, known as Exhale, was established to support the development of respite programming consistent with local priorities. METHODS: Exhale respite programs participate in an evaluation, which includes caregiver assessments. This paper focuses on

Let's talk about death, dying, and what matters most to you in life: Pretest and piloting of a translated and adapted conversation game.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to pretest and pilot the German version of the Hello conversation game (German: Hey du) to assess its comprehensibility and acceptability. Like the original, Hey du is designed as a low-threshold method to empower people of almost all ages and health conditions to engage in advance care planning (ACP), particularly targeting young/healthy people for whom there are currently few or no ACP programmes. METHODS: The conversation game was systematically translated into German using the TRAPD process and cognitively pretested in 12 interviews. Subsequently, two observati

Aggression, Suicidality, and Emotion Profiles in Youth: Links to Early Life Adversity.

Suicidality and physical aggression are leading, related youth public health concerns. Yet, whether adolescents who harm themselves, others, or both differ emotionally and etiologically remains unclear. To address this, adolescents from a prospective population-based birth cohort reported their suicidality, physical aggression, depression/anxiety symptoms, anger, and callousness (N = 1637). Distinct latent harm-emotion profiles were identified, which were linked to perinatal and childhood experiences. A six-profile solution was retained: Low harm (79.5%), moderate suicidality (6.5%), high suic

"It Makes It More Real to You": Abortion Attitudes Following Experience and Contact With Abortion.

INTRODUCTION: When positioned as part of a cluster of related social and political attitudes, abortion attitudes are characterized as somewhat fixed from a young age. The extent to which abortion attitudes are malleable, and can be shaped by experience, is under-researched in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals with (N = 12) and without (N = 16) abortion experience living in the United Kingdom, consisting of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Inductive thematic analysis was used to address the research ques

Mental health of sexual and gender minorities and its association with outings in Japan: A web-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) are known to experience mental health disparities. Outing, the non-consensual disclosure of one's sexual orientation or gender identity, has been suggested to exacerbate these issues. This study aimed to investigate the mental health status, outing experiences and their associations among SGMs in Japan. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from 'the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey' conducted in September-October 2022, analyzing SGMs aged 18-79. Outing experiences were assessed across family, friends and school/workplace. Ment

Formal and informal care use before, during, and after detection of cognitive impairment and dementia: A population-based matched study.

BackgroundDementia is linked to increased care use, but formal and informal care use throughout the dementia journey remains unclear.ObjectiveTo investigate care use before and after the detection of cognitive impairment, no dementia (CIND) and dementia and to identify care-related factors.MethodsWithin a population-based study, we matched older adults (≥78 years) who developed CIND (n = 244) and dementia (n = 175) with cognitively intact participants to form CIND/intact (n = 732) and dementia/intact (n = 525) samples. Dementia was clinically diagnosed and CIND was determined through a neurops

Survivor Perceptions of Supporters' Social Reactions in the Initial Months Following Sexual Assault: A Daily Diary Study.

Sexual assault survivors receive a variety of positive and negative social reactions when they seek support from friends, family, or others close to them (i.e., informal supporters). However, past research demonstrates that survivors' perceptions of these social reactions are more varied than suggested by their traditional categorization as "positive" or "negative." Although survivors experiencing elevated posttraumatic stress (PTS) and alcohol use may be at especially high risk of receiving "negative" reactions and experiencing poorer recovery outcomes, it is unclear to what degree these surv

The inflammation-depression link: How social networks buffer or exacerbate risk.

AIMS: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental disorder, and low social support and high strain could impact its long-term symptom severity. Increased inflammation, marked by C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen, has also been correlated with more MDD symptoms. However, the inflammation-MDD symptom association might vary by social support dimensions. The current study thus examined how social support dimensions moderated the inflammation-MDD severity correlation. METHODS: Community adults (N = 1,054) with and without MDD provided plasma samples to measure CRP and fibrinogen le

Changes in cognitive functioning and quality of life after relocation to a nursing home: a prospective longitudinal study of Swiss nursing home residents.

A relocation to a nursing home is a major life transition in older age, with potential impacts on cognitive functioning and quality of life. In line with psychosocial models of successful aging, we investigated how older adults adapted to this major life transition. Using data collected at nine nursing homes in Geneva, Switzerland, we studied changes in cognitive functioning (i.e., short-term, long-term, and working memory, verbal fluency, prospective memory, and inductive reasoning) and quality of life (i.e., emotional and social loneliness, depressive symptoms, and purpose in life) in cognit

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt
