PrEFiNe Plan: Strategic plan for Fabry diseases in Nephrology.

BACKGROUND: Renal failure is one of the main causes of death in patients with Fabry disease (FD). Due to the low prevalence of FD, delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, often the correct diagnosis is made when organ damage is already present. Early recognition of the disease would allow the prevention of severe complications and the premature death of patients with FD. OBJECTIVE: We present here the PrEFiNE project, which includes a wide spectrum of activities with the aim of improve knowledge and diagnosis of FD. The project is sponsored by Shire Iberia (http://shireiberica.com/) METHODS: Fro

Complementary and alternative medicine use among older Australian women--a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) among older adults is an emerging health issue, however little is known about older people's experiences of using CAM and the cultural, geographical and other determinants of CAM use in this population. This study used qualitative methods to explore older women's views of CAM and reasons for their use of CAM. Participants for the project were drawn from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) 1921-1926 birth cohort. Women who responded positively to a question about CAM use in Survey 5 (2008) of the ALSWH

Disparities in how parents are learning about the human papillomavirus vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Differential access to basic health information may contribute to persistent cervical cancer disparities. We examined whether human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine awareness, HPV knowledge, and use of information sources about the vaccine differ by sociodemographic characteristics associated with cervical cancer. METHODS: Study participants (n = 889) were caregivers of adolescent girls ages 10 to 18 years living in southeastern North Carolina. Analyses simultaneously controlled for caregivers' gender, race, age, education, income, and rural residence. RESULTS: Although most caregive

Geographic analysis of vaccine uptake in a cluster-randomized controlled trial in Hue, Vietnam.

This paper identifies spatial patterns and predictors of vaccine uptake in a cluster-randomized controlled trial in Hue, Vietnam. Data for this study result from the integration of demographic surveillance, vaccine record, and geographic data of the study area. A multi-level cross-classified (non-hierarchical) model was used for analyzing the non-nested nature of individual's ecological data. Vaccine uptake was unevenly distributed in space and there was spatial variability among predictors of vaccine uptake. Vaccine uptake was higher among students with younger, male, or not literate family h

Peer support for adult social care in prisons in England and Wales: a mixed-methods rapid evaluation.

BACKGROUND: More adults in prison need social care support. In some prisons, prisoners ('buddies') are trained to provide social care support for non-personal care tasks to other prisoners. These services are not mandated but have been proposed as a solution to support social care provision in prisons. Previous research explored delivery of peer support initiatives in prisons, but there has been little research evaluating the effectiveness, implementation and experience of social care peer support. There is a need to establish how best to measure the impact and cost of peer support schemes for

"Now you're talking my language" - Improving health literacy and patient-directed knowledge of scientific abstracts through provision of plain language summaries created by artificial intelligence: A cross sectional infodemiology study.

BACKGROUND: Due to free and digital availability of scientific abstracts in medical journals, as well as search engines including PubMed, many patients are increasingly looking to these as reliable and trusted sources of information, amidst an information ecosystem of potential mis- and disinformation. However, such scientific abstracts are difficult-to-read by the lay community, as they are not written purposefully for a lay audience. The Plain Language Summary now offers such readers a new medium to engage with, thereby helping with their health literacy and understanding of the research fin

Meeting the needs of women in the perinatal period, who use or are in treatment for using drugs: A mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Women who use and/or are in treatment for using drugs during the perinatal period have complex health and social care needs. Substance use in the perinatal period is multifaceted, with many confounding factors that may impact the long-term health and well-being of both mothers and children. Evidence is needed to identify which psychosocial interventions are effective for women who use and/or are in treatment for drug use during the perinatal period. OBJECTIVE(S): (1) Describe the range of psychosocial interventions available for women who use and/or are in treatment for drugs in t

Lithuania's National Digital Health System Architecture, Evolution, and Lessons From a Centralized Approach Using Longitudinal Document Analysis: Descriptive National Case Study.

BACKGROUND: National digital health systems are increasingly recognized as a key tool for strengthening health care systems and improving patient outcomes. Global guidance from the World Health Organization and European Union initiatives emphasizes interoperability, robust data governance, and secure exchange of health information as prerequisites for system-wide benefits. However, translating these principles into operational national digital health infrastructures remains challenging, and empirical evidence on long-term, centralized implementation models is limited. Lithuania is among a smal

Plastic surgery access deserts in the United States: A GIS-based national assessment.

BACKGROUND: Timely access to plastic and reconstructive surgery is critical for trauma, burns, congenital anomalies, hand conditions, and oncologic reconstruction. Prior workforce studies often rely on county- or state-level surgeon counts, which fail to capture patient travel burden. Network-based geographic analyzes using travel time may better reflect true access. METHODS: Using the 2023 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Physician and Other Practitioners Public Use File, all Medicare-participating plastic surgeons with valid U.S. practice addresses were identified. Locations were ge

Safer conception services for HIV-affected couples must address overlooked relationship dynamics: a commentary and call to action.

Data from East and Southern Africa shows the desire for children is strong among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Concurrently, many new HIV infections in East and Southern Africa occur in long-term sero-different relationships and may be due to the couples' attempts to become pregnant. Safer conception (SC) is a promising sexual and reproductive health service for PLHIV in Africa, yet it remains underutilised for high-priority at-risk populations, presenting a missed opportunity to prevent HIV transmission. Relationship-focused couples' interventions have improved sexual and reproductive healt

Worldwide, 3.8 million out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) occur annually. RescQ™ is a 12-month, non-randomised, prospective feasibility pilot evaluating a structured support pathway for adult bystanders involved in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of presumed medical or cardiac aetiology across Essex, United Kingdom. The pathway was developed to address the absence of a nationally standardised post-event support process for bystanders who witness, call emergency services, or assist with resuscitation. Attending ambulance clinicians offer brief on-scene signposting and register consenting adu
