BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) was originally isolated as tumour-specific antigens in uterine cervix carcinoma. These comprise two similar proteins, SCCA1 and SCCA2, and both are induced by type 2 cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is a type I cytokine that promotes allergic responses and mediates type 2 immunity. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that repetitive umbilical cord occlusions (UCOs) with worsening acidosis will lead to a fetal inflammatory response.
STUDY DESIGN: Chronically instrumented fetal sheep underwent a series of UCOs until fetal arterial pH decreased to <7.00.
