Evaluating the small aperture intraocular lens: depth of focus and the role of refraction and preoperative corneal astigmatism in visual performance.

PURPOSE: To evaluate depth of focus (DOF) and visual acuities (VAs) by manifest refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) and degree of preoperative corneal astigmatism with the IC-8 small aperture intraocular lens (SA IOL) (Apthera). SETTING: 21 investigational sites in the United States. DESIGN: Prospective, multicenter, open-label, parallel-group, nonrandomized, examiner-masked, 1-year clinical study. METHODS: Included patients had cataract and ≤1.5 diopters (D) preoperative corneal astigmatism. Patients received either the SA IOL in 1 eye targeted to -0.75 D and a monofocal or monofocal to

Visual Outcomes After Cataract Surgery With the Light Adjustable Lens in Japanese Patients With and Without Prior Corneal Refractive Surgery.

PURPOSE: To describe Light Adjustable Lens (RxSight, Inc) (LAL) visual and refractive outcomes in a Japanese patient population with and without prior refractive surgery. METHODS: In this retrospective chart review of patients with cataract in a private eye clinic, 34 eyes from 21 patients underwent cataract surgery with LAL implantation. Eyes underwent light treatment to adjust the patients' refraction after implantation to meet individual visual goals. Standard visual and refractive outcomes were collected. Contrast sensitivity (to assess quality of vision), clinical defocus and vergence cu

Z-suture scleral fixation intraocular lenses: A refractive and safety report.

PURPOSE: Scleral fixation of intraocular lenses constitutes a surgical option in cases where there is inadequate capsular support or zonular insufficiency. Knotless techniques, such as the z-suture technique, avoid suture-related complications, such as conjunctival erosion or exposure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the visual outcomes and postoperative complications of patients who underwent scleral z-suture fixation of the Akreos AO® intraocular lenses. METHODS: A retrospective, observational study was conducted, including 22 eyes of 20 patients who underwent Akreos AO® intraocul

Effects of cataract surgery on symptoms and findings of dry eye in subjects with and without preexisting dry eye.

PURPOSE: To compare dry eye symptoms and findings in post cataract surgery eyes' with and without preexisting dry eye. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, observational case-control study. METHODS: Sixty-seven eyes that had undergone cataract surgery were included; 48 were classified into group D (preexisting dry eye) and 19 into group N (no preexisting dry eye). No subjects received perioperative treatment for dry eye. We evaluated between-group differences in symptom scores, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), tear film breakup time (BUT), tear film breakup pattern (BUP), and ocular surface fl

Clinical Prediction of Excessive Vault After Implantable Collamer Lens Implantation Using Ciliary Body Morphology.

PURPOSE: To determine the factors related to the ciliary body that are predictive of outcomes of excessive vault (> 1,000 µm) after Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL V4c; STAAR Surgical) implantation. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, 27 eyes of 27 patients who presented with excessive vault (> 1,000 µm) following implantation of an ICL V4c were matched in a 1:2 ratio with those who presented with a normal vault (250 to 1,000 µm) on white-to-white distance, anterior chamber depth, and ICL size. The preoperative biometric parameters and clinical outcomes were compared between the

Early transient intraocular pressure spike after cataract surgery in highly myopic cataract eyes and associated risk factors.

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence of the early transient intraocular pressure (IOP) spike after cataract surgery in eyes with highly myopic cataract (HMC) and associated risk factors. METHODS: Consecutive patients treated with phacoemulsification were recruited. IOP was measured before and 1 day, 3 days, 1 week and 3 months after surgery. Axial length (AL) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were recorded, and optic disc tilt, rotation and beta-zone peripapillary atrophy (β-PPA) were measured from fundus photographs taken 1 week after surgery. Backward stepwise multiple linear regression was

First Experience With the ICD 16.5 Mini-Scleral Lens for Optic and Therapeutic Purposes.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the success rate, efficacy, and safety of the ICD 16.5 mini-scleral gas permeable (GP) contact lens. METHODS: This prospective study included referred consecutive patients with irregular corneas and severe ocular surface disease (OSD) in treatment failure. All patients were fitted with the ICD 16.5 mini-scleral GP lens. Even though we had some limited experience with scleral lenses, it was our first experience with the ICD 16.5 mini-scleral GP lens. Efficacy was assessed by comparing best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with the mini-scleral lens to baseline BCVA. A sub

Refractive Outcomes of 20 Eyes Undergoing ICL Implantation for Correction of Hyperopic Astigmatism.

PURPOSE: To analyze 1-week, 1-month, and 12-month postoperative refractive outcomes of eyes that under-went ICL implantation to correct hyperopic astigmatism. METHODS: The study enrolled 20 eyes of patients with an average age of 32 years (range: 21 to 40 years). The outcomes of spherical and cylindrical refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), vault, and angle parameters were evaluated 1 week, 1 month, and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The preoperative mean UDVA was 0.15 ± 0.11 (decimal) (20/133 Snellen) and increased to 0.74 ± 0.

The effect of the selected factors on corneal endothelial cell loss following phacoemulsification.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal endothelium is a single layer of cells, which do not regenerate. Damage to the endothelium can take place in the course of certain diseases and after intraocular operations. When the number of endothelial cells decreases, corneal decompensation can occur. Pre- and postoperative measurement of the number of the corneal endothelial cells can help assess the degree of corneal damage during the surgery. PURPOSE: To compare the effect of various factors, such as: sex, age, corneal incision, intraocular pressure, cataract density, visual acuity and surgeon's experience on corn
