Intracranial hydatid cysts in children.

Brain involvement in hydatid disease occurs in 1 to 2% of all Echinococcus granulosus infections. Fifty to 75% of intracranial hydatid cysts are seen in children. This study included 19 children who underwent surgery for intracranial hydatid cysts between January 1979 and September 1992. There were 12 boys and 7 girls, ages 3 to 16 years (mean, 8.1 yr). Headache and vomiting were the predominant symptoms. Papilledema was present in 16 patients, and 2 patients had secondary optic atrophy. A round, cystic lesion without perifocal edema and rim enhancement was detected on the computed tomographic

Laser photocoagulation treatment of choroidal melanoma.

Ten cases of choroidal melanoma were treated with Argon and/or Krypton laser photocoagulation in this retrospective study. Each patient received an average of 9.6 laser treatment sessions. Three female and seven male patients were treated and followed for an average of 69.9 months. Clinical regression was observed in seven cases (70%). Tumour size in these successfully treated cases ranged from 4.5 x 5.0 x 1.5 mm to 7.0 x 7.0 x 3.5 mm. Continued growth occurred in one case (10%), tumour recurrence which failed to respond to additional laser treatment in another (10%), and although a recurrence

Neuropathy associated with mitochondrial disorders.

Altered mitochondria within peripheral nerves were found in most cases of mitochondrial myopathy, in all cases of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy with optic atrophy (HMSN VI) and in 25 cases out of a larger series of 280 unselected neuropathies studied by electron microscopy for diagnostic purposes. The mitochondrial changes differed from those seen in the corresponding skeletal muscle fibres. They comprised enlargements with an amorphous matrix and distorted cristae, hexagonal paracrystalline inclusions, sometimes longitudinally arranged in a zig-zag pattern, prominent cristae contain

[Etiology and occupational rehabilitation of late vision disorders].

Advising patients about means of rehabilitation is an important task for the ophthalmologist. There is a lack of up-to-date studies on the outcome of job measures for various ophthalmic disorders. In a retrospective study the charts of 334 patients (October 86-November 89) at the rehabilitation centre for adults with late onset visual impairment (Veitshöchheim) were analyzed. Retinitis pigmentosa, optic atrophy, diabetic retinopathy and refractive anomalies were the most frequent diseases (13-19%). In comparison to the other disorders the incidence of diabetic retinopathy is increasing. Other

[Etiology and clinical aspects of palatal myoclonus].

Palatal myoclonus is a movement disorder consisting of rhythmic myoclonus of the soft palate, pharynx, larynx, and other muscles derived from the embryonal branchial arches. These movements are continuous and involuntary, and the patients are, in general, unaware of them. In the majority of patients, palatal myoclonus persists for life. In oculopalatal myoclonus, the eyes can be involved in the form of a nystagmus. Often a clicking noise in one or both ears is the initial symptom which can be heard by the examiner. A variety of etiologies have been linked to palatal myoclonus. The most common

Diagnostic survey at Yamanashi School for Blind: importance of heredity.

The commonest cause of blindness among the 67 patients at the Yamanashi School for the Blind was congenital cataract (16). Next was retinitis pigmentosa or choroido-retinal degeneration (8), then retinopathy of prematurity (7). Congenital glaucoma and brain tumor each contributed five. Four were due to microphthalmia/micro-cornea and five to high myopia. Direct ocular trauma caused three. Two each were attributable to complete albinism, aniridia, congenital nystagmus and bilateral retinoblastoma. Single cases each of anophthalmos, Behçet's disease, Hallerman-Streiff syndrome, hydrocephalus, ma

Beyond the homozygous paradigm: symptomatic partial biotinidase deficiency in a heterozygous child-first case report from Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Biotinidase deficiency (BTD) is a rare genetic condition inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern that affects multiple systems. Biotinidase (EC 3.5.1.12) cleaves the vitamin, biotin, from the biocytin and the dietary protein-bound sources, and recycles the biotin. It manifests with a range of neurocutaneous symptoms, including seizures, hypotonia, ataxia, skin rashes, alopecia, hearing loss, optic atrophy, and metabolic crises that resemble sepsis, delay in identification and prompt treatment, results in irreversible brain damage, coma, and, in severe cases, death. Newborn scre

Gaze palsy, hypogeusia and a probable association with miscarriage of pregnancy--the expanding clinical spectrum of non-opticospinal neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica is characterised by optic neuritis, longitudinally-extensive transverse myelitis and presence of anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies in the serum. However, non-opticospinal central nervous system manifestations have been increasingly recognised. Awareness of the widening clinical spectrum of neuromyelitis optica (unified within the nosology of 'neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders') is key to earlier diagnosis and appropriate therapy. We report 2 patients to illustrate the varied clinical manifestations of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders while postulating an

Treponemal Endovasculitis leading to branch artery occlusion: a rare manifestation of ocular syphilis.

Ocular syphilis, a re-emerging cause of uveitis, commonly features retinal vasculitis, but branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) is a rare, irreversible damaging complication. We present a 47-year-old woman with bilateral syphilitic panuveitis, retinal vasculitis and an inferior BRAO, emphasising the diagnostic value of multimodal imaging. She presented with progressive bilateral blurred vision, exhibiting bilateral nongranulomatous anterior uveitis, vitritis, peripheral vascular sheathing, and multiple chorioretinal lesions. Optical coherence tomography revealed inner retinal thinning consis

Spontaneous Bilateral Drusen Regression Without Atrophy in an Octogenarian With Gilbert's Syndrome: A Case Report.

We document significant drusen regression without atrophy (DRwoA) in a patient with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and concomitant hyperbilirubinemia. Serial optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus images were used to monitor drusen progression in the patient. Fundus photography of the macula revealed a dramatic improvement in visible drusen in each eye over the course of 2020-2023. Only a few small drusen were visible in the right eye, while moderate to intermediate-to-large soft drusen were present in the left eye. OCT imaging also demonstrated significant improvement in dr

Delineating the Molecular and Phenotypic Spectrum of the CNGA3-Related Cone Photoreceptor Disorder in Pakistani Families.

Cone photoreceptor dysfunction represents a clinically heterogenous group of disorders characterized by nystagmus, photophobia, reduced central or color vision, and macular dystrophy. Here, we described the molecular findings and clinical manifestations of achromatopsia, a partial or total absence of color vision, co-segregating with three known missense variants of CNGA3 in three large consanguineous Pakistani families. Fundus examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging revealed myopia, thin retina, retinal pigment epithelial cells loss at fovea/perifovea, and macular atrophy.

Gitelman syndrome and ectopic calcification in the retina and joints.

Gitelman syndrome is a rare inherited renal tubular disorder with features that resemble thiazide use, including a hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, hypomagnesemia, hypocalciuria and a low or normal blood pressure, hyperreninemia and hyperaldosteronism. Treatment is primarily correction of the potassium and magnesium levels. The diagnosis is confirmed with genetic testing but Gitelman syndrome is often not suspected. However, the association with ectopic calcification in the retina, blood vessels and chondrocalcinosis in the joints is a useful pointer to this diagnosis. Bilateral symmetrical wh
