An increased incidence of certain neoplasms occurs in immunodeficiency states. The incidence of cancer in organ transplant patients is approximately 4%. The predominant tumors are lymphomas, carcinomas of the skin and lips, carcinomas of the vulva/perineum, in situ carcinomas of the uterine cervix, and Kaposi sarcoma (KS). Tumors appear a relatively short time after transplantation. Unusual features of the lymphomas are the high incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, frequent involvement of extranodal sites, and marked predilection for the brain. Skin cancers present unusual features: predominanc

A 26-year-old woman had a chronic vesiculopustular and ulcerating skin disease associated with fever and arthritis. Cutaneous biopsy specimens showed an extensive infiltration of the dermis and epidermis by neutrophils. Direct immunofluorescence (IF) revealed linear subcorneal IgA deposits. Indirect IF showed IgA antibodies reactive with the subcorneal zone of normal epidermis. The disease responded to dapsone therapy. The association between neutrophilic dermatoses, including pyoderma gangrenosum, subcorneal pustular dermatosis, and related entities, and IgA involvement, either IgA gammopathi

Mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (MSC-CM), also known as secretome, is secreted by MSC and contains a variety of bioactive factors with anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, neuroprotection, and proliferation effects. Increasing evidence proved that MSC-CM plays an important role in various diseases, including skin, bone, muscle, and dental diseases. However, the role of MSC-CM in ocular diseases is not quite clear, Therefore, this article reviewed the composition, biological functions, preparation, and characterization of MSC-CM and summarized current research advances in different sourc

We examined an association between a history of hospital-treated depression and physical diseases in 1877 suicide victims from Northern Finland. Information on physical diseases and depression of victims was extracted from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Registers. Of suicide victims, 31% of female and 16% of male victims had a lifetime history of depression. When compared with victims without any lifetime hospital-treated physical illnesses, a history of depression was shown to associate with the diseases of the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems in the group of sym

Soon after the invention of photography, doctors began experimenting with photographs as a documentation tool. The first known medical photographs were produced in the 1840s and included photographs of skin diseases and facial deformities. Dermatology was one of the first specialties to use photographs, and photography was acknowledged as more objective evidence than the drawings and illustrations used earlier. Photographs have since become an essential part of modern dermatology and are an integrated part of daily clinical practice and patient care. Tips, techniques, and guides to improve cla

INTRODUCTION: Systemic autoimmune diseases frequently involve both the skin and eyes, with early cutaneous manifestations often serving as visible indicators of deeper, multisystem pathology. Conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, sarcoidosis, and Sjögren's syndrome display characteristic skin findings, including malar rash, heliotrope eruption, lupus pernio, or xerosis, which may precede or parallel serious ocular complications, including uveitis, retinal vasculitis, conjunctival granulomas, and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Despite this overlap, diagnostic and therap

Herbs from the Gentianaceae family are widely known for their medicinal and pharmacological properties. They were used centuries ago as a part of traditional medicine in China and Tibet. This review aims to draw attention to the potential uses of gentian herbs in treating various diseases, including skin conditions, gastrointestinal and liver disorders, wound healing, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. The aim of our study was to systematically summarize current knowledge about key bioactive compounds present in both roots and aerial parts-such as xanthones, iridoids, and flavonoids-and highl

Background/Objectives: Secondary syphilis typically presents with a non-pruritic maculopapular rash. However, vesicular and bullous manifestations are exceedingly rare in adults and may mimic autoimmune blistering diseases. The objective of this report is to describe atypical presentation of secondary syphilis with predominant vesiculobullous lesions and to emphasize the importance of including syphilis in the differential diagnosis of blistering skin diseases. Methods: We describe the case of a 46-year-old bisexual man with syphilis of unknown duration who presented with recurrent polymorphic

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases. The current understanding of acne primarily revolves around inflammatory responses, sebum metabolism disorders, aberrant hormone and receptor expression, colonization by Cutibacterium acnes, and abnormal keratinization of follicular sebaceous glands. Although the precise mechanism of action remains incompletely understood, it is plausible that macrophages exert an influence on these pathological features. Macrophages, as a constituent of the human innate immune system, typically manifest distinct phenotypes across various diseases. It has

Psoriasis (PS) and atopic dermatitis (AD) are common skin inflammatory diseases characterized by hyper-responsive keratinocytes. Although, some cytokines have been suggested to be specific for each disease, other cytokines might be central to both diseases. Here, we show that Tumor necrosis factor superfamily member 14 (TNFSF14), known as LIGHT, is required for experimental PS, similar to its requirement in experimental AD. Mice devoid of LIGHT, or deletion of either of its receptors, lymphotoxin β receptor (LTβR) and herpesvirus entry mediator (HVEM), in keratinocytes, were protected from dev

Generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE) is the most severe form of fixed drug eruption and can be misdiagnosed as epidermal necrolysis (EN). We report the case of a 42-year-old male patient presenting with more than 50% skin detachment without defined areas of exanthema or erythema and a history of one prior event of EN caused by acetaminophen (paracetamol), allopurinol, or amoxicillin 1.5 years ago. The initial diagnosis was GBFDE or EN. The histology of a skin biopsy was unable to distinguish between the two diseases. The course of the disease, the later clinical presentation, and th

Alopecia areata is one of the most common autoimmune diseases resulting from T cell-mediated damage of hair follicles. CD8+ T cells infiltrate hair follicles and are responsible for destruction of hair follicles. However the underlying mechanisms for hair loss remain still obscure. In the present study, we identified that suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS3), a classical inhibitor of cytokine signaling, significantly inhibits CD8+T cell maturation, interferon-γ (IFN-γ) production and alopecia areata. SOCS3 is downregulated in the skin of alopecia areata patients and murine autoimmune alo

Over the past decade, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) has advanced our understanding, diagnosis, and management of several areas within dermatology. NGS has emerged as a powerful tool for diagnosing genetic diseases of the skin, improving upon traditional PCR-based techniques limited by significant genetic heterogeneity associated with these disorders. Epidermolysis bullosa and ichthyosis are two of the most extensively studied genetic diseases of the skin, with a well-characterized spectrum of genetic changes occurring in these conditions. NGS has also played a critical role in expanding the

BACKGROUND: Research as shown that celiac disease (CD) is associated with skin diseases, but their causality remains unclear. Therefore, this Mendelian randomization (MR) study evaluated the causality between CD and skin diseases.
METHODS: Bidirectional MR analysis was performed on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) candidates identified from genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets using inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-egger, weighted mode and simple mode. Multivariate MR (MVMR) analysis was subsequently conducted by adjusting for BMI, smoking, and alcohol use. Re

Essential oils (EOs) are known to have varying degrees of antimicrobial properties that are mainly due to the presence of bioactive compounds. These include antiviral, nematicidal, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant properties. This review highlights the potential of EOs and their compounds for application as antifungal agents for the treatment of skin diseases via conventional and nonconventional approaches. A search was conducted using three databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar), and all relevant articles from the period of 2010-2020 that are freely available in English we

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema (HE) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease caused by a genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. There is a lack of population-based studies on skin diseases in the elderly.
OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to estimate the frequency of HE in the elderly to determine its burden of disease in this particular population.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the research platform AugUR, a study on chronic diseases in the elderly (n = 1133, ages 70-95 years, mean age 77.6, 45.1% women). Raw frequencies were estimated using self-reports on physician-diagnosed HE from a standard

Tuberous sclerosis complex 1 (Tsc1) is a tumor suppressor that functions together with Tsc2 to negatively regulate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activity. Here, we show that Tsc1 has a critical role in the tight junction (TJ) formation of epithelium, independent of its role in Tsc2 and mTORC1 regulation. When an epithelial cell establishes contact with neighboring cells, Tsc1, but not Tsc2, migrates from the cytoplasm to junctional membranes, in which it binds myosin 6 to anchor the perijunctional actin cytoskeleton to β-catenin and ZO-1. In its absence, perijunctional

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) are two common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Although showing different etiology and clinical manifestations, patients with either disease suffer from low health-related quality of life due to pruritus (dermal itch). Recent studies have revealed that more than 85% of psoriasis patients suffer from pruritus, and it is also the dominating symptom of AD. However, as this is a non-life treating symptom, it was partly neglected for years. In this review, we focus on current findings as well as the impact and potential treatments of pruritus in these two sk

Introduction: Calcium channel blockers (CCB) are commonly used for cardiovascular diseases. The evidence supporting the use of CCB in dermatology is mostly anecdotal and limited to case reports or small case series.Areas covered: This review article is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the therapeutic use of CCB in dermatology. The second part focuses on mucocutaneous adverse reactions due to the administration of CCB.Expert opinion: The use of CCB in dermatology is mainly based on its properties as a vasodilator and the inhibition of muscle contractions, such as pernio, anal fi
