How specific are affective and attachment instability to adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury? A comparison with adolescents with major depression.

BACKGROUND: Affective and interpersonal instability are suggested to underlie adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, previous research has not directly compared adolescents with NSSI to those with psychiatric conditions that are often, but not always, correlated with NSSI. We explored the specificity of affective and interpersonal instability to adolescent NSSI compared to depression. METHODS: Based on a clinical sample of 70 adolescents (56 female and 14 male), we compared a group with NSSI (n = 50) with a clinical comparison group diagnosed with major depression and no engageme

Prevalence and treatment effects of suicidal ideation and self-injurious behavior in children and adolescents in outpatient psychotherapy: A multicenter assessment.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation and self-injurious behaviors (SISIB) in children and adolescents are a major concern in clinical practice. Yet, little is known about the prevalence rates of SISIB in outpatient clinics and its response to routine psychotherapy. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the prevalence of SISIB and the changes in SISIB in a heterogeneous clinical outpatient sample of children and adolescents undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy in Germany. METHODS: The sample consists of N = 5730 child and adolescent outpatients, 54.05% female, mean age = 12.16 years (SD = 3.

Are Positive Mental Health and Social Support Protective Factors in the Development of Suicidal Ideation in Chronic Pain? A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The "integrated motivational-volitional (IMV) model of suicidal behavior" links the development of suicidal ideation (SI) to feelings of defeat and entrapment. Positive mental health and social support appear to be protective in this process. Both were tested as moderating factors between entrapment and SI in the at-risk group of persons living with chronic pain (PLCP). METHODS: N = 285 PLCP participated in an online survey, n = 161 again at a 4-week follow-up. Generalized linear models tested whether positive mental health and social support moderated associations between both in

Mapping the Network Structure of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Role of Emotional and Interpersonal Vulnerability and Attachment in Spanish Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent during adolescence and is associated with a range of emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal vulnerabilities. Although prior research has identified key correlates such as emotion dysregulation, hopelessness, interpersonal distress, and attachment insecurity, these factors have largely been examined in isolation, limiting understanding of how they jointly contribute to NSSI. METHODS: The present study examined the network structure of NSSI and associated vulnerability processes in a community sample of 2067 Spanish adolescents (M

Sex-Specific Factors Associated With Suicidal Ideation Among Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disease linked to mental health issues, including suicidal ideation. Despite growing concern, limited research has explored the sex-specific biological and psychosocial risk factors contributing to suicidal ideation in this population. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify sex-specific factors associated with suicidal ideation in individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 695 adults diagnosed with T2D at a university hospital outpatient clinic between May 2022 and April 2023. Clinical and laborator

Use of Toxicology Reports to Examine Substances Used in Poisoning-related Suicides among US Health Care Workers.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between occupational access to drugs and poisoning-related suicides involving specific substances. METHODS: Using National Violent Death Reporting System data, we compared poisoning-related suicides where selected substances were present versus absent. Occupational access to drugs was defined as working in occupations involving drugs. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated with sexstratified multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Male and female workers with occupational access to drugs had higher odds of poisoning-related s

Psychosis, intimate partner violence, and self-esteem among a clinical sample of African American women with suicidal ideation.

Both psychotic symptoms (i.e., delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech/behavior, reduced emotional expression, social withdrawal, lack of motivation) and intimate partner violence (IPV; i.e., abuse by a current or former partner or spouse) disproportionately affect African American women who face increased mortality and morbidity associated with IPV due to delayed help-seeking. However, little research has focused on the association between these two concerns. Moreover, there is a dearth of information about mediators of the psychotic symptoms-IPV exposure link and virtually no explorat

Child sexual exploitation in a French child welfare cohort: Maltreatment histories, psychological and behavioural difficulties, and suicidal ideation.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative evidence on child sexual exploitation (CSE) in child welfare populations remains limited, particularly in France. This study examined CSE, associated maltreatment and psychological difficulties, and its indirect association with suicidal ideation. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study using case-file data for 1315 youth receiving child protection services in Essonne, France. Logistic regression models were adjusted for age, sex, age at entry into care, and school enrolment. Firth penalized logistic regression was used for restricted comparison,

Accessing Care and Treatment in the Emergency Department for Self-Harm and Suicidal Ideation: A Qualitative Study of Service Users' Experiences.

Despite the availability of guidelines and protocols, service users' experiences of accessing care and treatment for self-harm and suicidal ideation at the Emergency Department (ED) are variable. There is a need to better understand what impacts service user experiences given the important role of the ED for accessing care and influencing future interactions with mental health services for people who experience self-harm and suicidal distress. This study aimed to identify the experiences of service users when presenting to the ED with self-harm and suicidal ideation. A descriptive qualitative

Disrupted structural-functional coupling in adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder and non-suicidal self-injury.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is consistently associated with an elevated risk of suicidal behaviours, including non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Neuroimaging evidence suggests that MDD patients with NSSI exhibit alterations in both brain structure and function, warranting further investigation into the underlying mechanisms linking these changes. METHODS: A total of 291 participants were recruited for this study: 141 drug-naïve individuals with MDD, who were divided into an MDD + NSSI group and an MDD-NSSI group based on the presence of self-injurious behaviour, and 150 healthy

Childhood trauma profiles and addictive features of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: The roles of rumination and age of onset.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a major public health concern among adolescents, with evidence suggesting that repetitive NSSI may share addiction-like characteristics. This study examined how childhood trauma profiles are associated with addictive features of NSSI, focusing on rumination as mediator and age at onset as moderator. A latent class analysis of 1506 adolescents identified four trauma profiles: low trauma, high neglect trauma, high emotional trauma, and complex trauma. Adolescents in the high emotional and complex trauma groups showed higher addictive features of NSSI. Ruminatio

Risk Factors for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents: Evidence from a Meta-Analysis of 18 Longitudinal Studies.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant risk factor for subsequent suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, and psychological disorders. This meta-analysis of published prospective studies has examined the longitudinal predictors of NSSI drawing on 18 published reports and 23,737 independent participants. The random effects model showed that the overall prediction of NSSI was significant (OR = 1.18, 95%CI[1.08-1.28]). These factors, which include depressive symptoms (OR = 1.21, 95%CI[1.10-1.33]), prior history of NSSI (OR = 2.34, 95%CI[1.66,3.29]), being female (OR = 1.59, 95%CI[1.01,2.5

Unmasking the "Mixed-Dysregulated" phenotype: latent profiles of affective temperaments and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with depression.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent among adolescents with depression, yet the heterogeneity of underlying temperamental risk factors remains poorly understood. Traditional variable-centered approaches fail to capture how distinct affective temperaments co-occur within individuals. This study aimed to identify latent profiles of affective temperaments and examine their association with NSSI, exploring the statistical mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation (CER). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2025 to September 2025 at the First

Suicidal ideation during a major depressive episode predicts chronic or recurrent depression: A three-year national study.

OBJECTIVE: Although suicidal ideation (SI) is commonly regarded as a symptom of major depressive episodes (MDE), emerging evidence suggests it may carry prognostic significance for the depressive illness. This study examined whether SI during a MDE independently predicts risk of recurrence or chronicity over a three-years period. METHODS: Data were drawn from Waves 1 and 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults. We included 2853 participants with past-year DSM-IV MDE at Wave 1 who completed Wave 2 asse

Lifetime and acute risk of suicidality by profiles of early life adversity: an observational cohort study in a high-risk population.

Early life adversity in the form of child maltreatment (CM) is a transdiagnostic risk factor for suicidal ideation and behavior (SIB), yet its heterogeneity and relevance for lifetime versus acute SIB and psychotherapy outcomes remain unclear. In an observational cohort of 240 high-risk adults with borderline personality disorder (42.5%) or persistent depressive disorder (57.5%), lifetime and acute SIB were assessed using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. CM profiles were derived using a data-driven clustering approach based on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Associations between

Pathological Parasocial Attachment Associated With Suicidal Behavior in a Patient With Schizoaffective Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Case Report.

Parasocial attachments are one-sided emotional relationships with public figures that are generally benign and may provide emotional comfort, social connection, and identity development. In vulnerable individuals, however, these attachments may become maladaptive when associated with significant emotional distress, functional impairment, or suicidal behavior. Limited literature exists regarding the role of parasocial attachments in individuals with borderline personality pathology and severe mental illness. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman with schizoaffective disorder, depressive ty

Longitudinal Effects of Cannabis Use on Suicidal Behaviour in Early Adulthood in Washington State, United States and Victoria, Australia.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of cannabis use on young adult suicidal behaviour. Matched cohorts were compared across two regions: Washington State, USA (where recreational cannabis use was legalised in 2012) and Victoria, Australia (where recreational cannabis use remains illegal). The hypotheses were (1) cannabis use would be more prevalent in Washington State in association with legalisation and (2) cannabis use would predict suicidal behaviour similarly in both regions. Data were drawn from the International Youth Development Study (IYDS) involving 1,470 participants (55.4% fe
