Metabolic rate and gross efficiency at high work rates in world class and national level sprint skiers.

The present study investigated metabolic rate (MR) and gross efficiency (GE) at moderate and high work rates, and the relationships to gross kinematics and physical characteristics in elite cross-country skiers. Eight world class (WC) and eight national level (NL) male sprint cross-country skiers performed three 5-min stages using the skating G3 technique, whilst roller skiing on a treadmill. GE was calculated by dividing work rate by MR. Work rate was calculated as the sum of power against gravity and frictional rolling forces. MR was calculated using gas exchange and blood lactate values. Gr

Association between the initial anatomical severity and opportunity of return to work in occupational hand injured patients.

BACKGROUND: The severity of the injury is the most important factor to return to work (RTW) when it comes to hand injuries. The purpose of our study is to examine the relationship between the initial anatomic severity, evaluated by the Hand Injury Severity Scoring (HISS) system, and probability of RTW in occupational hand injured patients. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 140 patients hospitalized for surgery due to occupational hand injuries between 2004 and 2008 were recruited. Participants were interviewed for occupational history and RTW status. The probability of RTW was comp

Measurement of physical work capacity in patients with chronic aortic regurgitation: a potential improvement in patient management.

BACKGROUND: Timing of surgery in aortic regurgitation (AR) is important. Exercise testing is recommended upon uncertainty about functional limitations but reports on cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in populations with pure chronic AR are scarce. METHOD: Twenty-eight patients referred for surgery because of chronic AR (13 in NYHA I, 10 in NYHA II and five in NYHA III) were tested by CPET pre- and 6 months postoperatively. Echocardiography, with measurement of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), diameters (LVED, LVES) and volumes (LVEDV, LVESV) was also performed. RESULTS: The p

Upper-body work capacity and 1RM prediction are unaltered by increasing muscular strength in college football players.

The purpose of this study was to assess changes in upper-body muscular strength and work capacity following off-season resistance training and the resultant effect on prediction of muscular strength (1 repetition maximum, or 1RM). National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II football players (n = 58) were divided into low-strength (LS, 1RM <275 lb, n = 23) and high-strength (HS, 1RM > or =275 lb, n = 35) groups based on initial 1RM bench press. Maximal repetitions to failure (RTF) were performed with a relative (60, 70, 80, and 90% of 1RM) and absolute load (185 lb for players w

Workstyle as a predictor of pain and restricted work associated with upper extremity disorders: a prospective study.

PURPOSE: A patient's reaction to a perceived increase in work demand may be related to his or her upper limb symptoms. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a brief measure of a patient's perception of how they respond to perceived increases in demands at work predicts pain levels and work status 6 months after an initial consultation with a hand surgeon. METHODS: Working patients with diverse upper extremity diagnoses completed a measure of response to job stress at their first clinic visit and were followed for 6 months during their prescribed treatment course. Controlling for

The triple work-up for emergency department patients with acute chest pain: how often does it occur?

OBJECTIVES: To measure the degree of overlap and diagnostic yield for evaluations of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), pulmonary embolism (PE), and aortic dissection (AD) among Emergency Department (ED) patients. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study of consecutive adult patients seen in the ED of a 78,000-annual-visit urban academic medical center. Patients who had received at least one of eight of the tests used in our ED to diagnose these three diseases were identified through three methods, and a final study population list was created. [Work stressors among physicians with and without the acquired cardiovascular disorders: assessment using the Occupational Stress Index].

The Occupational Stress Index (OSI) questionnaire for physicians was used in a case-control study, with a high participation rate (> 90%). The study was carried out among physicians employed at clinical institutions in Novi Sad, receiving their medical care at the health center situated within the Novi Sad clinical center. The cases were physicians with one or more of the acquired (potentially stress-related) cardiovascular disorders (ACVD) (myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, arterial hypertension and certain arrhythmias). The control group included physicians without manifest ACVD. Two O

Outcome of work rehabilitation for people with various disabilities and stability at a one-year follow-up.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether the outcome obtained at the end of a work rehabilitation programme for people with various disabilities were stable in a one-year perspective. An additional aim was to explore which factors influenced the outcome upon completion of work rehabilitation and at the one-year follow-up. The study used information from a database and comprised 291 clients who had completed rehabilitation at least one year ago. Variables such as sociodemographic data, parameters describing the work rehabilitation period and work capacity upon completion of the

Mental stress and trapezius muscle activation under psychomotor challenge: a focus on EMG gaps during computer work.

Momentary reductions in the electrical activity of working muscles (EMG gaps) contribute to the explanation for the relationship between psychosocial stress and musculoskeletal problems in computer work. EMG activity and gaps in the left and right trapezii were monitored in 23 participants under low and high mental workload (LMW and HMW) demands during computer data entry. Increases in EMG activity and decreases in EMG-gap frequencies in both left and right trapezius muscles were greater during HMW than LMW. In addition, heart period and end-tidal CO2 were lower during HMW, whereas self-report

Association of occupational and non-occupational risk factors with the prevalence of work related carpal tunnel syndrome.

PURPOSE: Several occupational and personal risk factors cause the development of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The purpose of the study was to evaluate both non-occupational and occupational factors associated with CTS in industrial workers. METHODS: A cross sectional study was designed with 400 industrial workers (77% male, 23% female) randomly selected. Workers' upper extremities were examined and related signs and symptoms were assessed. Questionnaires about personal and occupational risk factors were completed and suspicious cases were referred for NCV (nerve conduction velocity) testing

Early predictors of chronic work disability associated with carpal tunnel syndrome: a longitudinal workers' compensation cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The study objectives were to identify early predictors of chronic work disability associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to test the hypothesis that variables from each of several domains (sociodemographic, clinical, work-related, and psychosocial) would add unique predictive information. METHODS: Washington State workers were interviewed 18 days (median) after submitting a new workers' compensation claim for CTS. Baseline predictors of chronic work disability (> or =180 days of work disability compensation in the year after claim submission) were examined for workers wh

Evaluating the phobias, attitudes, and cultural competence of Master of Social Work students toward the LGBT populations.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests there is bias toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons by social workers; unfortunately, little research has been conducted to examine Master of Social Work (MSW) students' views toward these populations. The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment scale to evaluate the attitudes, phobias, and cultural competence of MSW students toward the LGBT populations. METHODS: An assessment scale was developed and administered to MSW students (n = 173) at a Midwestern American university. RESULTS: The majority of MSW students reported low ph

Further work on the cryopreservation of articular cartilage with particular reference to the liquidus tracking (LT) method.

The cryopreservation of articular cartilage with survival of living cells has been a difficult problem. We have provided evidence that this is due to the formation of ice crystals in the chondrons. We have developed a method in which the concentration of the cryoprotectant dimethyl sulphoxide (Me(2)SO) is increased progressively, in steps, as cooling proceeds so that ice is never allowed to form, but the very high concentrations of Me(2)SO required at low temperatures are reached only at those low temperatures. In this paper, we describe some new experiments with discs of ovine articular carti

On the origin of pedicled skin inversion vaginoplasty: life and work of Dr Georges Burou of Casablanca.

The first reports on gender-confirming surgery had been published in Germany in the 1920s, but it took some 30 years before sex reassignment surgery for transsexuals became generally known. Initially, such surgery was performed mostly in Europe and Casablanca. In 1956, the gynecologist Dr Georges Burou (1910-1987) independently developed the anteriorly pedicled penile skin flap inversion vaginoplasty in his Clinique du Parc in Casablanca. This technique was to become the gold standard of skin-lined vaginoplasty in transsexuals. During his life, he was to perform well over 800 vaginoplasties fo

Behavioral health problems as barriers to work: results from a 6-year panel study of welfare recipients.

Over the course of welfare reform, behavioral health problems have emerged as significant issues. Welfare time limits have added urgency to recipients' efforts to obtain economic self-sufficiency and have raised new concerns about mental health and substance abuse problems as barriers to work. However, there is limited research on how behavioral health problems operate to impede the employability of welfare recipients. This analysis draws on data from a 6-year panel study of welfare recipients (n = 341) to examine how a broad spectrum of mental health and substance abuse problems impact effort

A review of work-force development literature for the Māori addiction treatment field in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Māori, like Indigenous Australians and other indigenous people world-wide, are simultaneously over-represented among those presenting with addiction-related problems and under-represented within various health professions. Providing the opportunity for individuals and whanau (family/extended family) to work with ethnically matched health workers is likely to increase service accessibility and to improve treatment outcomes. In New Zealand, a number of initiatives have been instigated to increase the capacity of the Māori health work-force and reduce related barriers to treatment. This article p

Prevalence and effects of mood disorders on work performance in a nationally representative sample of U.S. workers.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the workplace costs of mood disorders has focused largely on major depressive episodes. Bipolar disorder has been overlooked both because of the failure to distinguish between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder and by the failure to evaluate the workplace costs of mania/hypomania. METHOD: The National Comorbidity Survey Replication assessed major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder with the World Health Organization (WHO) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and work impairment with the WHO Health and Work Performance Questionnaire.
